Chapter 88: Lullabies and Macarons
At Rocco’s enthusiastic reply, Sylas let out a strange grunt, almost like he had been struck, before quickly regaining his composure.
His face returned to its usual stoic expression as he gave a small nod and stood up as though nothing had happened.
Without a word, Sylas effortlessly scooped Rocco with his Mr. Bunny into his arms and walked briskly toward the bed.
He set Rocco down on the large, spacious bed, where Rocco crawled on all fours to the center.
Patting the mattress with a soft thump, Rocco called out to Sylas.
"Big brother! Come on, you too! If you sleep near the edge, you’ll fall off, so you have to sleep in the middle!"
Tonight, Rocco had declared himself the older brother, determined to make sure Sylas was properly tucked in and comfortable.
Of course, the real purpose of this arrangement was probably for Sylas to kill him.
But the official excuse was that Rocco had promised to sing Sylas a lullaby.
And a promise was a promise.
So, Rocco had to properly fulfill his task of putting Sylas to bed... He grinned to himself.
"...You, come closer. You’re so foolish that you’ll probably fall off the bed even if you sleep in the middle."
"Ugh! Hmph, I don’t agree with that!"
Wrapped in a blanket, Sylas ignored Rocco’s gesture and instead gave him an exasperated look while beckoning him over.
Rocco puffed up his cheeks in annoyance at being insulted but was elegantly ignored by Sylas, who easily lifted him up and cradled him in his arms.
Rocco grumbled, feeling disgruntled.
Hugging his Mr. Bunny tightly, Rocco puffed out a frustrated breath, his cheeks still puffed up.
With the blanket and Sylas’s warm embrace, Rocco was warmer than expected, and it felt surprisingly comfortable.
The fear of possibly being killed faded, and he relaxed, allowing a sudden wave of drowsiness to wash over him.
"Mmm... so sleepy... Zzz... Zzz..."
He snuggled deeper into the blanket, but, of course, he wasn’t going to fall asleep like some child.
Startled, he opened his eyes wide and blinked rapidly.
If he kept blinking like this, he could avoid succumbing to the drowsiness—probably!
Sylas, looking down at him with a slightly incredulous expression, sighed heavily.
"...Stop doing stupid things and just go to sleep."
"Wh-what?!"
Rocco was about to shout in protest, but the moment he realized who he was up against, he quickly shut his mouth, muttering under his breath.
This wasn’t retreating in the face of danger; it was a strategic withdrawal.
Yes, that’s what it was.
Besides, he wasn’t actually sleepy yet.
After all, he still had to keep his promise and sing the lullaby!
"I’m not sleeping yet! I haven’t sung you your lullaby, big brother!"
With a determined little huff, he wriggled out from under the blanket.
He gently placed Sylas’s head on his lap and patted it like he was soothing a child.
Yes, this was how it was supposed to go—this was how he would take care of Sylas.
Rocco cleared his throat as he prepared to sing, inhaled deeply, and then began.
"Rock-a-bye, baby, in the treetop..."
"...You’re absolutely tone-deaf..."
"Wha-what?!"
"...And the lyrics are wrong... Everything is wrong..."
Rocco, blushing brightly, began his first attempt at singing.
With a smug expression, he proudly offered his voice, thinking, Let them marvel at my beautiful singing voice!
But unfortunately, his performance was met with harsh criticism right from the very beginning of the song.
His face flushed with frustration, and tears welled up in his eyes as he trembled.
Just then, Sylas’s large hand gently cupped his puffed-up cheek.
The sudden contact caught Rocco off guard, and he stiffened in response.
Looking down at Sylas, who was lying on his lap, he cautiously observed him.
What he saw wasn’t the usual stern expression, but a faintly softened look.
"──...It’s comfortable," Sylas murmured softly.
Rocco’s eyes widened in surprise, his face frozen in a silly, wide-mouthed expression.
Then, Sylas let out a small chuckle.
It was such a rare sight that it left Rocco dumbfounded.
"Thank you, Rocco. I think I can sleep well now."
At that moment, Rocco finally realized.
Sylas was half-asleep!
He noticed Sylas’s eyes were unfocused, swaying slightly, and the smile on his face was completely out of character.
Once Rocco understood, the tension in his body melted away, and he chuckled softly, nodding to himself with satisfaction.
If Sylas is half-asleep, then I’m not afraid!
Now was the perfect time to put Sylas to bed.
If he succeeded, Sylas’s plan to kill him would likely be put on hold.
"Yes, yes! Good boy, good boy, big brother says," Rocco said confidently.
Emboldened by his realization, Rocco began to stroke Sylas’s head with Mr. Bunny’s ears, getting a little carried away with his overzealous efforts to put Sylas to sleep.
"Good boy, good boy, big brother..."
As he continued to gently pat Sylas’s head, Rocco found himself growing drowsy.
Unable to resist the overwhelming sleepiness, his consciousness slowly began to fade away.
Sylas watched as Rocco, still with his head resting on his lap, drifted into a peaceful sleep.
He murmured softly in his sleep, mumbling incoherently as his body rocked gently, lost in a dream.
His words were unintelligible but sounded like he was nibbling on something, likely enjoying some kind of sweet treat in his dreams.
Although Rocco had a rather small appetite in general, he had an unexpected fondness for sweets.
It seemed that for him, dessert was always a separate stomach from regular meals.
Despite the fact that eating too many sweets was bad for his health, Sylas could never bring himself to say anything when he saw Rocco enjoying a dessert, blissfully covered in cream around his mouth.
It was something so endearing that it made Sylas want to smile, but he also knew he had to be strict with Rocco sometimes for his own good.
It was hard to continue being the bad guy, but Sylas knew it was necessary for Rocco’s safety.
