Chapter 67: A Warm Bed and Shared Goodnights
Exasperated by Georgio’s tantrum, Rocco sighed and said, "You fool, you’re sleeping with us too."
Georgio immediately froze, his outburst coming to an abrupt halt.
A moment later, he broke into a grin and climbed into the bed, smiling.
What a noisy one, Rocco thought.
"I’m not happy about it not being just the two of us," Georgio muttered sulkily.
"Hm? Why’s that? It’s less scary with more of us, isn’t it?" Rocco replied, tilting his head in confusion as Georgio, puffing his cheeks in dissatisfaction, slipped into the bed next to him.
After all, the reason Georgio had wanted to sleep with Rocco in the first place was because he was afraid of sleeping alone.
Shouldn’t he be glad that Ragar had joined them?
Wouldn’t more company make things less frightening?
When Rocco suggested this, blinking at Georgio’s grumpy expression, Georgio stared at him blankly for a moment before bursting into laughter.
"Hah! Oh, I see, I see! That’s just like you, Master! Right, this one’s on me. You’re not to blame," Georgio said, chuckling as he ruffled Rocco’s hair.
Rocco pouted in response, puffing out his cheeks to show his dissatisfaction.
What’s so funny about that?
Even if he asked, Georgio would probably give some cryptic answer he wouldn’t understand.
Turning his head away from Georgio in a huff, Rocco shifted his body and clung to Ragar, who was already fast asleep.
Surrounded by warmth on both sides, he began to feel his eyelids grow heavy, lulled into drowsiness by the comforting heat.
"Mm... mmmph..."
Although the weight of the bodies pressing against him made him frown slightly, Rocco decided it was better than being cold.
With a quiet sigh, he forced himself to relax, smoothing out the crease between his brows.
When he felt the arms wrapped around his stomach from behind slacken slightly, he glanced over his shoulder to find Georgio fast asleep.
That was quick.
Georgio had always been quick to adapt, no matter the situation.
He could laugh when it was time to laugh, and when irritated, his cheerful smile could vanish in an instant, replaced by a blank expression.
If he decided to sleep, he would fall asleep within seconds.
Maybe it was a habit. Rocco vaguely recalled Georgio mentioning once that in the slums, those who weren’t quick on their feet were the first to die.
Georgio’s unnaturally fast adaptability and sharp reflexes must have been crucial tools for survival in that harsh environment.
As Rocco drifted off, sandwiched between Ragar’s steady warmth and Georgio’s protective embrace, he found himself marveling at the peculiar dynamics of their little family.
In any case, Rocco thought, Georgio now had him—and the rest of them.
From here on out, Rocco would make sure Georgio felt safe enough to sleep soundly.
That was all there was to it.
With that comforting thought, he closed his eyes.
Just as he was about to drift into a peaceful sleep, something soft and fluffy wriggled its way between him and Ragar.
"Hmm? Laxus? Is that you? Are you joining us too? I thought I got you a nice, soft cushion to sleep on," Rocco murmured sleepily.
A small whimper, "Wuff," answered him.
The fluffy intruder was indeed Laxus, the little dog who had only joined their family earlier that day.
Rocco had prepared a cozy, warm spot by the window for Laxus, complete with a fluffy cushion.
But it seemed Laxus preferred being together with them instead.
How adorable.
"...Well, I suppose being alone can get lonely," Rocco muttered, stroking Laxus’s soft fur as his heavy eyelids began to close once more.
His thoughts wandered to memories of his past life.
In that life, he had often slept alone in a sterile hospital bed.
Over and over, night after night, until the day he died—not in the comforting warmth of a familiar home, but on that same cold hospital bed.
While he was fortunate to have been surrounded by his beloved parents in his final moments, the days leading up to them had been defined by isolation.
He recalled the tension that had kept him from sleeping peacefully, even in the hospital.
Although there were people nearby, the room felt vast, impersonal, and lonely.
That hollow solitude had been his constant companion in his previous life.
But now, things were different.
"Goodnight, Georgio, Ragar... Laxus," Rocco whispered.
The simple act of saying "goodnight" felt like an incredible blessing.
It was even more special when the ones he said it to were family, and the bed he slept in was in the safety of a warm, welcoming home.
This life with Ragar, Georgio, and now Laxus had become so normal to him, yet moments like these reminded him that none of it was ordinary.
Especially given the world they lived in—a dangerous mafia underworld where life and death were constantly at odds.
Rocco hadn’t yet witnessed the full horrors of that world firsthand.
But the oppressive atmosphere of the main estate, and the deep, abyss-like gazes of Sylas and his father, had given him a glimpse.
He could imagine that the reality was far worse than he could envision.
Could he protect this irreplaceable family and this precious, extraordinary life in a world like this?
"...Goodnight, Master," a voice whispered faintly, just as his consciousness began to fade.
Rocco felt a small twinge of confusion at the sound.
The speaker had called him "Master," so it must have been Georgio—or so he thought.
Yet the voice didn’t quite match.
Georgio’s voice was a little higher-pitched, wasn’t it?
The thought lingered briefly before sleep overtook him.
...Well, never mind.
Rocco decided it must have been his imagination.
That voice had to belong to Georgio.
With that thought drifting through his hazy mind, he finally slipped into sleep.
...
The glass door slid open, and he stepped onto the balcony.
As the cool night breeze brushed against Laxus, the warmth of that child suddenly felt achingly far away.
He’d timed his move perfectly, waiting until everyone—including the bodyguards—had fallen fast asleep.
