Chapter 68: The Color of a Hero

However, he hadn’t expected anyone to notice his presence.

To think there was someone sharp enough to sense him... Such was the prowess of the infamous "Georgio the Hyena," once targeted by Del Fiore himself.

Yet even someone of Georgio’s caliber couldn’t withstand the raw aura of a Beastman.

Like the lion Beastman earlier, Georgio had collapsed the moment he was exposed to even a fraction of it.

"...Well, hello, Olgert. Turns out sneaking in was easier than I thought," he murmured, holding a pendant-shaped magic crystal close to his lips.

Leaning against the railing, he gazed back into the room.

His eyes fixed on the boy sleeping peacefully on the bed with a serene expression on his face.

The crystal shimmered, and an irritated voice crackled through.

"Hey, you brat! Are you pulling this stunt again?! Did you even tell the boss about this plan? The man’s furious—he never gets this mad!"

A soft chuckle escaped him. "Oh, is that so?"

"It’s not funny! The whole organization’s in chaos! Do you even understand your position? You’re messing with the balance between the two major families! Do you get how serious this is?!"

"Everyone’s so uptight," Laxus replied lightly. "It’s not like I’m going to die. Everyone knows that. Nothing’s going to change—just like always. The other groups will stay too scared to show their faces, and I’ll be back as soon as this is over."

On the surface, it might seem like chaos, but it was business as usual.

He knew Olgert understood that as well as anyone.

His lecture was for appearances’ sake, nothing more.

Having listened to enough of Olgert’s scolding, Laxus pressed on with his report, a faint smirk playing at his lips.

"What’s more important right now is the situation here. The boss is someone to keep an eye on, but the real threat is the heir. What was his name again...?"

"Hah... You mean Sylas Di Malvento?"

"Ah, yes, Sylas. He’s extremely dangerous. I’d prefer to avoid crossing paths with him if possible. Cozying up to the second son was the right move."

Sylas Di Malvento.

Laxus only encountered him once since his transformation, but the sheer presence the man exuded had been overwhelming.

If Laxus had let his guard slip even slightly, Sylas might have uncovered his true identity.

It would have been ideal to remain close to the heir, but taking such a risk was unwise.

The second son, who was said to be treated coldly, had initially raised some suspicion after being exposed to the heir’s overwhelming presence.

However, it seemed there was little need for caution in his case.

Remembering the boy’s mannerisms and behavior, Laxus let out a small chuckle.

Hearing this, Olgert’s voice came through the crystal, laced with confusion.

Laxus answered with a laugh.

"The second son, Rocco, seems so naive and adorable. If I play to his sympathies just a little, I think I can easily bring him to our side."

"What? Rocco—the second son who’s treated like dirt? That kid’s useless. I’ve heard even his own family hates him, despite sharing their blood."

Laxus chuckled again, recalling the look in the head of the family’s eyes when he watched the boy.

"...I wouldn’t be so sure. To me, it seemed like the second son was actually the Di Malvento family’s weak spot."

In any case, staying close to that boy seemed like a wise move.

And truthfully, Laxus found himself personally intrigued by him.

"...The color of a hero, huh," he murmured.

Laxus covered one of his crimson eyes with a hand as he spoke softly.

Those red eyes, gleaming like blood, were feared as the mark of a cursed child—symbols of the devil, both religiously and socially.

Yet someone had once called them the color of a hero.

How strange people could be.

"Huh? Did you say something?"

"No, nothing. In any case, I’ll be staying here for a while. If that boy proves useful... he might just help bring about the Di Malvento family’s downfall."

Olgert let out a long, exasperated sigh before the crystal dimmed and went silent.

The moonlight suddenly grew brighter, and Laxus realized it was a full moon tonight.

He gazed absentmindedly at the sky.

Yet, instead of the brilliant moon dominating his vision, it was the quiet, somber darkness of the night sky that caught his attention.

"...Just like that boy’s eyes," he murmured.

Like amethysts.

The thought startled him, and he quickly shook it off.

To be reminded of someone’s eyes while gazing at the night sky—it was out of character for him.

Perhaps staying within Di Malvento territory had unsettled him more than he realized.

He needed to shake off his lingering fatigue.

Quietly, Laxus allowed himself to return to his beast form.

Then, shifting his appearance to mimic a dog, he slipped back into the boy’s embrace.

...

"Laxus? Where are you?"

Several days had passed since the infamous birthday party that had triggered a cascade of events, and Rocco had been growing closer to the newest member of their family, a fluffy little puppy named Laxus.

One day, while playing together in the garden, Rocco took his eyes off the pup for just a moment—and in that brief instant, Laxus disappeared.

Panic surged through him as he darted around the garden, his heart pounding.

Laxus was still just a tiny puppy.

Small and fluffy like a bundle of cotton candy, he was bound to be scared and waiting for someone to find him.

Rocco’s imagination conjured a dreadful image of the little pup whimpering, teary-eyed, somewhere in the bushes.

His face paled at the thought.

No, that couldn’t happen!

He couldn’t let such an adorable, fragile creature feel lonely and abandoned!

"Laxus, I’m so sorry! I’m coming to find you!"

With a cry of determination, Rocco steeled himself and bolted off to search for his missing pup.

This wasn’t the first time Laxus had gone missing, though.

From the very first day they’d met until now, Laxus had a habit of wandering off.
