Chapter 229: Cheeky

"Still fluffy," Ronan murmured, his voice rough from disuse.

Riven groaned and buried his face in Ronan’s shoulder. "Don’t talk about my ears right now."

"I’m sorry," Riven murmured, his voice soft and hoarse as he curled into Ronan’s arms.

"I’m sorry," Riven murmured, his voice soft and hoarse as he curled into Ronan’s arms. Riven felt the warmth of Ronan’s naked skin through his shirt, their hearts thudding in sync beneath the quiet hum of their bond. "I didn’t know... I didn’t know this would happen so soon."

He looked genuinely shaken, guilt clearly displayed by his furrowed eyebrows and the way he gripped Ronan’s arm, like he still feared it might all fall apart.

Ronan just smiled faintly. His body was still recovering, muscles sore and tight, but the worst of the fever was gone. The fog that had taken over his senses for days had finally lifted. His voice came out low and soothing. "I don’t blame you, Riven."

Riven blinked, startled.

"I never did," Ronan added, pressing his forehead to Riven’s. "You didn’t know, and I do not believe you would knowingly put me in harms way."

Riven felt like he could cry! The amount of trust Ronan put in him made him feel even more guilty!

Ronan shifted slightly, adjusting their bodies until Riven was lying half on top of him, their legs tangled together. "There’s something I figured you should know, though," he murmured, his fingers lazily trailing circles across Riven’s bare back after lifting his shirt a little. "From the new moon to the full moon, or the other way around, it takes about thirteen to fifteen days."

Riven’s ears twitched, half-listening, half-distracted by the feel of Ronan’s hand on his skin.

"That’s how long bonded mates can be apart before things start to... You know," Ronan explained, eyes now fixed on the ceiling. "That’s what happened to me. We passed the two-week mark... And this happens."

Riven’s eyes widened. "Wait... That actually makes so much sense. Werewolves and the moon, it’s all connected."

Ronan smirked faintly. "You don’t say."

Riven rolled his eyes but leaned his head on Ronan’s chest, listening to the steady thump of his heart. "Still. I’m really sorry I left for so long. I didn’t know it would hurt you this much."

"I’m just glad you’re back," Ronan whispered into his ear.

Riven froze for a second, a strange pressure building in his chest. Then he smiled a warm smile that reached his eyes and he tilted his head up.

Their eyes met. For a long time, neither of them said a word. Then Riven leaned in, his lips brushing against Ronan’s.

It had been too long. Too much time without touch, without warmth, without him.

The kiss started soft, tentative. Riven wasn’t in a hurry. He just wanted to feel Ronan. But the moment their lips moved in sync, Ronan deepened the kiss. It was eager and hungry.

His tongue slipped between Riven’s parted lips, exploring him like a man starving. Riven moaned softly, not out of surprise, but satisfaction. This wasn’t rushed or clumsy—it was the kind of kiss you gave someone you thought you might’ve lost. Something that said, I missed you more than I can put into words.

Riven let himself melt into it, allowing Ronan to claim him for a moment. His fingers wove into Ronan’s hair, tugging gently, urging him closer. Ronan responded with a groan, his hand sliding up Riven’s spine, warm and possessive.

Eventually, they parted for air, foreheads pressed together as they caught their breath.

"Okay," Riven panted, a crooked smile tugging at his lips. "I’ll admit. That was... Effective medicine."

Ronan chuckled, deep and gravelly. "You’re welcome."

They lay like that for a while, basking in each other’s warmth, listening to the faint rustle of wind outside the window. The floor was still cold underneath them, but it didn’t matter.

"Okay," Riven panted, catching his breath, a crooked smile tugging at the corners of his lips. His cheeks were flushed, and his black wolf ears twitched with every exhale. "I’ll admit. That was... effective medicine indeed."

Ronan’s smirk was immediate. His icy blue eyes gleamed mischievously as he leaned in a little closer, his lips brushing the shell of Riven’s ear. "We could do more... Of the effective medicine."

Riven snorted and shoved his shoulder with a grunt. "Absolutely not. I just got back, I travelled across two forests, three valleys, a desert. I’m exhausted."

"I will exhaust you," Ronan said cheekily. Now that he was recovered, there was no end to his shamelessness. For Riven he could be shameless, that act of being a cold alpha was only for everybody else, not for him.

Riven lowered his arm and looked at him. "Wow."

"What?"

"You’ve been saving that one, haven’t you?"

Ronan tried to look innocent. "Maybe."

A small laugh escaped Riven before he could stop it, and the sound made Ronan’s chest warm. The tension of the past weeks, the stress, the ache of separation—it all started to fade like snow in the spring sun. All that remained now was Riven. Here. In his arms.

Ronan blinked down at their tangled limbs and then frowned slightly. "Wait a second. Why are we still on the floor?"

"Well... You were on the floor, and I just joined you."

Ronan chuckled, sat up, and without another word, scooped Riven up bridal style.

"Hey!" Riven yelped, squirming slightly. "What are you doing? Put me down, I can walk—"

"You’re tired, remember?" Ronan grinned. "And I’m recovering. This is efficient snuggling logistics."

Ronan walked them over to the bed and gently lowered Riven onto the mattress. "I’m lucky you’re mine."

Riven opened his mouth to say something, but the feel of soft blankets and Ronan’s warmth surrounding him short-circuited his brain. The bed felt like heaven after sleeping on the cold floor.

Ronan slid in beside him, pulling the blanket over them and immediately wrapping an arm around Riven’s waist. Riven rolled onto his side without thinking, tucking himself against Ronan’s chest with a contented sigh. He was back where he belonged.
