Chapter 228: Bond

Riven quietly walked into the room, the soft thud of his paws barely registering over the sound of shallow breathing. He was still in his wolf form, something he hadn’t planned on.

He’d tried to shift back at least three times on the way over, but it was like his body had stubbornly decided, "Nope. Not until you fix this." Fine. Whatever. He’d deal with it later.

Right now, all his focus was on the large, snowy-white wolf curled up on the floor, Ronan seemed to shift to the floor because of his high fever, he felt that the floor was cooler and it brought him more comfort than the bed.

Riven’s heart squeezed at the sight of him. Ronan looked... Not great. His normally strong form was curled into a tight, vulnerable ball, like he was trying to disappear into himself. His fur was damp with sweat, sides rising and falling slowly.

His eyes were squeezed shut, and every so often, a pained sound left his muzzle—quiet but enough to make Riven feel pain. At this point, a thought crossed Riven’s mind, if things followed the original story and he died, Ronan would not be facing this... This situation.

Troy and Eli were already there, hovering protectively. Eli was crouched beside Ronan, his hands busy with herbs and damn towels to lower the body temperature.

Troy stood back a bit, arms crossed, watching everything with that intense gaze of his.

The moment Riven stepped into the room, both of them looked up. Troy’s eyes softened, relief flickering through them like a brief breeze. He gave Eli a small nod. Eli, reading the signal instantly, stood and gathered his supplies.

"We did what we could," Eli said, brushing his hands off on a cloth. "His vitals have stabilised for now. But it’s the bond. It’s rejecting the distance. He needs you. That’s the cure."

Riven’s ears twitched. That made sense. Wolves weren’t exactly known for being subtle with emotions.

Troy moved toward the door and glanced back at Riven. "We’ll give you two some space."

Riven gave a small dip of his head—his best attempt at a thank-you when all he had was fur and eyes. The two of them slipped out of the room quietly, closing the door behind them.

Alone now, Riven padded forward slowly, cautiously. He felt too guilty... He did not know the time limit for this thing! There was no time limit in the original story because he was dead! And the mate bond did not force Ronan to be vulnerable. Well, at least now he knows. The most Ronan could go without seeing him was around 14 days.

He lowered himself onto the ground beside him, nose brushing against Ronan’s.

For a moment, nothing happened. Then Ronan stirred slightly, a faint whimper slipping out before his nose twitched. His eyes fluttered open—not fully, just enough to focus on the familiar scent near him.

Recognition flickered there.

Riven nudged him gently, pressing his forehead against Ronan’s. The bond between them pulsed like a living thing, buzzing under the skin, warm and electric

Ronan unfurled just a little. He shifted closer, his body instinctively seeking the comfort Riven offered, and buried his face against Riven’s neck.

Riven exhaled through his nose, his tail giving a tiny wag. He hadn’t realised how much he had been affected. Not just Ronan, he was too, the symptoms were just not as strong. There was a longing in his heart, and now he could finally calm it.

Ronan stirred suddenly, and without warning, his large white paw looped around Riven’s smaller, darker frame. In one instinctual movement, Ronan dragged Riven closer, pressing them chest to chest, fur to fur. His muzzle nestled into the crook of Riven’s neck, breathing him in like he’d been suffocating until now.

Riven froze, startled for just a second, but the tension melted away as fast as it came. His body relaxed into the hug, the cold, hard floor beneath them no longer a concern. He let himself sink into Ronan’s embrace.

Ronan let out a soft rumble in his chest, the kind of sound that made Riven’s back vibrate. Riven tucked his snout under Ronan’s chin, pressing into the thick fur of his throat. Ronan’s scent brought him just as much comfort as his scent did to Ronan.

Riven’s chest tightened, but not in a bad way. It was the kind of ache that came from holding something precious. He breathed in again and again, chasing that scent, pressing closer, even though they were already locked together. It still didn’t feel close enough.

His body reacted before his thoughts did. A strange, powerful need stirred in his chest—deep and ancient and undeniably wolf. He didn’t know how to explain it, didn’t even fully understand it, but he needed something more. Something raw. Something lasting.

He needed to bite Ronan.

Not to hurt him but to feel him on a deeper level.

His jaw twitched, teeth barely grazing the ruff of Ronan’s neck as he tried to resist the urge. It was ridiculous. Ronan was still recovering, still weak from whatever sickness had taken hold of him. This wasn’t the time.

But Ronan shifted again in his sleep, pressing even closer, wrapping his body tighter around Riven like he was trying to fuse them together. His tail brushed against Riven’s, and that feeling sent a shiver down his spine.

Riven groaned low in his throat. Damn it.

It’s not easy being a wolf!

After a few moments, there was a shimmer in the air, their fur melted away into skin, paws into fingers, fangs into teeth. Riven blinked up at the ceiling, dazed and breathless, now curled in Ronan’s arms, bare chest pressed against bare chest. Ronan’s fever, which had been raging a few moments ago had calmed down.

Ronan stirred awake, eyelashes fluttering as he opened his ice blue eyes, striking as ever, and the first thing he saw were soft, fluffy black wolf ears poking out of Riven’s tangled hair.

He smiled.
