Chapter 227: Hurt
Chapter 227: Hurt
Incident with Leon... Riven understood immediately what she meant. The Dowager Queen already explained her side.
Riven exhaled, feeling a weight lift from his shoulders. "It’s forgiven and forgotten. What happened between us? Nothing, of course. I was not kidnapped, I was brought here for sightseeing, I enjoyed your hospitality, and now I wish to return."
The queen nodded, a look of relief washing over her features. "I’m glad to hear that. The last thing we need is discord between our clans, especially following the king of the Lion Kingdom’s actions. His reckless behaviour will not pose a problem for us moving forward. You have my assurance."
"Thank you, Your Majesty," Riven replied, gratitude flooding his voice. "As for my return... May I request a carriage?"
"Of course. Take care of yourself, Riven," she said, her tone softening. "And do relay my regards to Ronan. I hope he recovers quickly."
"Thank you again," Riven affirmed, feeling the warmth of her words settle in his heart. He turned to leave, determined to make his way back to Ronan.
The dowager queen had arranged for a carriage to expedite his journey, and as Riven got into the carriage, he couldn’t help but look at the palace. It had been his home for five days. He did not think much of what he was doing right now, "Goodbye, Leon."
He finally remembered. Riven did not think that Leon would care that he had left. After all, he was used to casual encounters. And Leon, too, felt the same, but things would change.
As the carriage rolled along the winding roads, Riven gazed out the window, watching the landscape change from the lush greenery of the kingdom to the rugged terrain near the border town.
The sun dipped low in the sky, casting a warm golden hue across the fields, but Riven wasn’t in the mood to appreciate the beauty. His mind was fixed on Ronan, his heart racing with each mile they covered. It was the mate bond that made him feel the rush and worry.
The carriage rattled to a halt, and Riven blinked, realising they had arrived in the very town where he had been kidnapped. A wave of unease washed over him, a sense of familiarity that he hated. Riven did tell the driver to stop because he had to stretch his legs, they had been riding non-stop for the entire day! But the coincidence was just painful.
He felt the need to stretch his legs, and though hunger gnawed at him... He did not want to stop here!
Stepping out into the cool evening air, he took a deep breath, hoping to shake off the memories that threatened to resurface. But just as he began to take a few steps away from the carriage, he spotted someone approaching, their silhouette sharp against the fading light. WAS HE GOING TO DIE?!
Riven instinctively tried to run away when the figure came to a stop. The man bowed his head with utmost respect and said, "I hope everything is to your liking here."
When he tried to make sense of things, the figure had already turned away, disappearing into the shadows
Confusion settled in his gut. Who the hell was that? He strained to catch a glimpse, but the figure was long gone. What the actual hell was that?!
Unbeknownst to Riven, Leon had taken control of this town, and tensions simmered just beneath the surface. The wolf and snow leopard clans had been provoked into a series of skirmishes, and now, seeing Riven’s carriage adorned with the royal emblem, the townsfolk treated him with an odd mixture of respect and fear.
"Sir!" one of the locals called out, rushing over with a bow. "We didn’t expect to see you here. Is everything alright?"
Riven raised an eyebrow, puzzled by the townsman’s reaction. "Yes, everything’s fine. I’m just passing through."
The man nodded eagerly, clearly relieved. "Good to hear, sir. We’ve had some trouble lately, but your presence here reassures everyone. If you need anything—"
"I appreciate it, but I really need to get going," Riven interrupted.
They thought he was a noble sent from the Lion Kingdom. And though his wolf ears had them confused... Why would anyone from the wolf clan ride the carriage from the Lion Kingdom, especially the royal carriage that is distinct from everyone else’s?
The clock struck two in the morning as Riven finally arrived at Ronan’s castle, the imposing silhouette stark against the night sky. His heart raced with a mix of longing and anxiety.
Without a moment’s hesitation, he rushed past the grand entrance, leaving behind the driver. Riven then stopped in his tracks and turned around. "Stay the night and leave when you are rested," he informed the driver before turning around to leave again.
The driver’s grateful nod made Riven happy, after a long day of travel, they had formed an unspoken bond. Riven felt a surge of gratitude for the man who had ensured his safe return.
With a deep breath, Riven focused, and in an instant, he transformed into a sleek black wolf, his fur shimmering like the night itself. The familiar rush of power surged through him, and he bounded deeper into the castle, his green eyes glowing in the dim light.
He ran through the halls, and everyone stepped aside for him, no one dared to stop him.
Riven was not just any visitor, he was part of Ronan’s world, his mate. With the personnel change and the cleansing, everything is as it should be. People respected the hierarchy, and Ronan took his place as the only authority, the Alpha of the wolf clan.
Each step brought him closer to Ronan, to the connection that tethered them both finally calmed down, he was back with Ronan, so he felt more at ease.
Riven finally approached the master bedroom. He felt so guilty for leaving Ronan like this. And though he could say, Ronan is a grown man, he could take care of himself, Riven knew that staying apart for too long would hurt Ronan.
