Chapter 85: Previous Civilization

Lin Feng listened intently to Chen Mei’s explanation about the teleportation portals.

It was his first time hearing about such things, and his curiosity was piqued.

Yet, despite her detailed explanation, a lingering sense of dissatisfaction gnawed at him.

"Wait—you’re telling me no one actually knows where these things come from? And you just... tested them without knowing what they did?" His brows furrowed in confusion, the gaps in her explanation too glaring to ignore.

"I guess so." Chen Mei shrugged, her tone carrying a hint of mystery.

"No one really knows the true origin of these teleportation portals, but there’s a prevailing theory about how they came to be."

As she spoke, she subtly glanced at Lin Feng from the corner of her eye, trying to gauge his reaction.

Lin Feng was a bit baffled by Chen Mei’s behavior.

He hadn’t expected the young miss of the Chen Clan to act so childishly.

Then again, considering they were about the same age, maybe it wasn’t that surprising.

Maybe I’m the weird one for being so serious all the time, Lin Feng mused, shaking his head slightly to push the thought aside.

Dwelling on it wouldn’t change anything.

Instead, he deliberately widened his eyes and parted his lips just enough to seem fascinated—doing his best to look as though Chen Mei’s words were the most captivating thing he’d ever heard.

Let’s see how this goes. She seems like the kind of person who wears her heart on her sleeve, he thought, settling in to observe her reaction to his "acting."

He leaned forward ever so slightly, keeping his expression open and curious, as if he were hanging on to her every word.

And he was definitely right.

The moment Chen Mei noticed his interest, her entire demeanor shifted.

She subtly raised her nose, clearly trying to appear aloof and dignified—but the attempt only made her seem even more endearing.

Her lips curled into a faint smirk, and her purple eyes sparkled with a mix of pride and mischief, as if she were savoring the attention.

It was obvious that she was enjoying playing the role of the one in control.

This girl is also a disaster, Lin Feng thought, his gaze lingering on her face a moment longer than he intended.

Her purple eyes shimmered like amethysts beneath the sunlight, framed perfectly by her long, glossy black hair.

The contrast—dark as midnight and bright as a gemstone—was striking, almost otherworldly.

And then there was her skin—fair and flawless, as if untouched by hardship.

It wasn’t difficult to imagine that a single touch would feel like brushing against silk.

If she weren’t such a handful, she’d probably have an entire sect of admirers following her around, he mused, shaking his head internally.

But for all her teasing and playfulness, there was something refreshingly genuine about her—a warmth that made her impossible to ignore.

"Well then, since you’re so interested, I’ll tell you!" Chen Mei declared, her voice carrying an exaggerated air of casualness.

Yet despite her attempt to play it cool, her excitement peeked through the cracks.

She couldn’t resist sneaking glances at him—checking, perhaps, to see if he was still hanging on to her every word.

As he watched her playful arrogance, Lin Feng sighed inwardly and made an effort to appear even more intrigued.

But just as he was about to speak, a sudden thought flashed through his mind, making his eyes gleam with newfound interest.

Can this be considered flattery? Lin Feng wondered, but before he could dwell on the thought, Chen Mei, delighted by his reaction, eagerly pressed on.

She adjusted her tone, trying her best to sound even more solemn and mysterious.

"Hmph, hmph! I didn’t think you were such an obedient man, Lin Feng! Well, since you’re clearly begging me to tell you, I’ll enlighten you!" She raised her nose even higher, her eyes sparkling with happiness—clearly, she was enjoying their conversation far more than she let on.

"According to the records in the Celestial Sanctum, long before the major cities were established in the Eastern Territories, there was an ancient civilization that once thrived here.

Many believe they were far more powerful than us because the teleportation portals they left behind contain a power even the most powerful cultivators of the Eastern Territories cannot understand," Chen Mei said, her expression turning serious.

This time, there was no trace of her earlier playfulness—this was knowledge that even she understood to be rare, the kind of information only the most powerful clans were supposed to possess.

Huang Bei, Yan Hao, and Yan Li, who had been quietly listening, were stunned.

Clearly, they had never heard this kind of information before, and the curiosity burning in their eyes made it obvious they were dying to ask questions.

Yet, a single sharp glance from Chen Li silenced them. The message in his eyes was unmistakable:

Don’t ask any stupid questions! This is information you shouldn’t know at your level!

Before Chen Mei could continue, Chen Li cut her off, his voice unusually serious.

"Chen Mei, didn’t your father warn you not to speak about matters of the church in public? Do you realize how dangerous it would be if the church found out you know about these things?"

The weight of his words hit Chen Mei like a cold wind.

Her playful demeanor vanished as her face paled slightly.

Realizing she had already said too much, she quickly shut her mouth and shifted awkwardly, searching for a way to change the topic.

With forced cheerfulness, she blurted out...

"All right, that’s enough of that for now. Knowing too much can sometimes be more of a curse than a blessing anyways!" Chen Mei said, trying to sound casual.

She even puffed up her ample chest as if to emphasize her point.

Yet, despite her bravado, a trace of worry flickered in her eyes as she constantly scanned their surroundings, checking if anyone was watching.

Lin Feng, the root of this entire situation, remained silent—not because he had nothing to say, but because he was genuinely shaken by what he had just learned.

His mind raced, thoughts flashing through his head at breakneck speed.

What? There was a previous civilization living in the Eastern Territories before us? Were they human... or something else? No, wait—

That’s not the most important question. His eyes narrowed slightly as a deeper realization struck him.

If I’m right, this so-called Celestial Sanctum is the central church of the Church of Heaven. That means... the Church of Heaven existed before the current Eastern Territories!

If the previous civilization was wiped out but the Church of Heaven survived, then...

A chill crept down his spine as the implications sank in.
