Chapter 84: Trade and Portals
Lin Feng, who had never stepped outside Raincloud Village, had never heard of teleportation portals in his entire life.
Confused, he quickly asked, "What’s a teleportation portal?"
Yan Hao and Yan Li were stunned when they heard his question—it was the first time they had ever met someone who didn’t know about teleportation portals.
"What? You don’t know about teleportation portals?" Yan Hao asked, staring at Lin Feng with his mouth wide open in disbelief.
"Is Raincloud Village so poor that they can’t afford teleportation portals?" Yan Li added, his face filled with curiosity as he eagerly awaited Lin Feng’s response.
Seeing everyone’s reaction, Lin Feng suddenly felt a bit embarrassed.
It was as if he were a country bumpkin encountering advanced technology for the first time.
Dang, was there a teleportation portal back in Raincloud Village, and I just didn’t know about it? he thought to himself.
Would it have been easier to leave if I’d used that instead of walking through the forest?
The more he thought about it, the more questions filled his mind.
Now that I think about it, I barely know anything about Raincloud Village—or the other two villages in Blackwood Forest.
Why did they isolate themselves from the rest of the world? Are they strong? Are they weak? His eyes narrowed in thought.
I should go back and find out when I’m stronger.
Realizing how little he truly understood about the world around him, a sense of curiosity and urgency stirred within him.
It’s like I’m a kid, seeing the world for the first time, Lin Feng thought to himself, feeling a mix of embarrassment and curiosity.
Chen Li, hearing the twin brothers’ comments, suddenly smacked both of their heads before chiding them.
"Hey, you brats! Just because you’re a little older than Lin Feng doesn’t mean you can bully him. So what if he doesn’t know about teleportation portals?
Don’t you know that Raincloud Village forbids anyone from building portals near their lands?
They didn’t want outsiders to be able to reach the village easily."
Yan Hao and Yan Li, now properly scolded, scratched their heads awkwardly, looking guilty. Yan Hao was the first to speak, his tone apologetic.
"Sorry, Big Bro Feng, we didn’t mean to offend you.
We were just surprised. Everyone knows teleportation portals are the reason cities in the Eastern Territories can trade resources so easily—it’s a part of daily life.
Without them, traveling through the wilderness between major cities is basically a death sentence if you’re not strong enough."
Yan Li chimed in, continuing the explanation.
"That’s right. Powerful spiritual beasts roam the lands between major cities.
If you’re just a Qi Condensation cultivator, traveling from one city to another without using a teleportation portal is basically impossible. T
o even have a chance, you’d need to be at least in the Foundation Establishment realm."
This was the first time Lin Feng had heard anything like this, and it left him stunned.
He hadn’t expected that traveling between cities was something this difficult to accomplish.
Even with his limited knowledge of the world, he knew that Foundation Establishment cultivators were rare—even among the major cities of the Eastern Territories.
I guess if you’re still at the Qi Condensation stage, you’re not considered a true cultivator yet, he thought to himself.
Only when you reach Foundation Establishment and can survive in the world on your own do you take the first step toward becoming a true powerhouse.
Lin Feng clenched his fist at this realization, feeling a renewed surge of motivation rising within him.
Chen Li, noticing that Lin Feng wasn’t offended, quickly added, "Sorry about these two idiots, Lin Feng. Sometimes they just can’t hold themselves back and blurt out whatever comes to mind."
Lin Feng shook his head with a smile.
"Don’t worry, Old Chen, it’s not a problem at all. I know how unusual it is for someone my age to be this ignorant. I just never bothered to learn about these things when I was living in Raincloud Village."
Hearing his words, Yan Hao and Yan Li’s eyes lit up with curiosity. Just as they were about to open their mouths and fire off a question—
BOP!
"Ouch!"
"Dang, Old Man Chen, that hurts!"
Yan Hao and Yan Li grimaced in pain as Chen Li smacked their heads again, his sharp glare making his message clear without a word:
Don’t ask unnecessary questions, you brats!
Lin Feng felt a warmth spread through his chest at Old Chen’s reaction.
He appreciated the gesture—he didn’t feel like explaining why he’d never bothered to learn these things.
Deep down, he already knew the answer.
I was too busy getting harassed for being a Broken Soul to care about things like that, Feng thought bitterly, memories of his time in the village flashing through his mind.
’All right, since no one’s actually answered Lin Feng’s question, I’ll do it instead," Chen Mei said, her voice warm and clear, easily drawing everyone’s attention.
Her long black hair swayed gently in the breeze, catching the light as it framed her face.
Her purple eyes gleamed with light, a spark of curiosity dancing within them.
There was an easy brightness to her expression—like someone who enjoyed sharing what she knew and yet deep within her eyes, you could always see a hint of danger, it was as if she was tempting you to try something foolish.
"A teleportation portal is something that’s been around in the Eastern Territories long before any of the major cities were even built," she explained, her tone light but sure.
"Any ’new’ teleportation portals you see today are just imitations of the massive ones found in those cities—they’re like branches from an ancient tree."
She paused for a moment, her expression a bit serious.
"No one really knows where the original portals came from.
What we do know is that most of the major cities were built around them.
When there’s a portal, trade becomes a lot easier, so people naturally gathered and built cities in those places."
