Chapter 80: Burden

Huang Bei, after seeing Chen Li’s reaction, also calmed down and quickly said, "That’s right, this isn’t our problem. This is a problem for the higher-ups. People like us should just keep our heads down and work honestly."

Yan Hao and Yan Li slowly removed their hands from their mouths, still looking around, a bit worried.

"Huang Bei is right.

This problem is something for those old fogeys within the clan to handle.

We shouldn’t interfere in the matters of adults.

When we gain enough power, then our words will start to mean something," Chen Mei said, trying to forcefully calm herself down.

But it was clear she wasn’t the kind of person to hold back her emotions, as she continued clenching and unclenching her fists.

I guess the reason why Chen Mei is so angry is that something personal happened to her involving the Church of Heaven, especially since they mentioned someone named Chen Su, Feng thought to himself as he stayed quiet.

Even though Old Chen had already healed his injuries, it would still take some recuperation before he was completely back to his old self, so he needed a place to stay within the city.

Chen Zi then bowed his head once more toward both Chen Li and Chen Mei as he spoke.

"Young Miss, Senior Chen Li, I’ll need to go first.

I have to take Young Master Chen Yang back to his father and give a report on everything that happened here.

Rest assured, I will only tell the truth of the matter and not hold anything back."

Chen Li, hearing Chen Zi’s explanation, also nodded his head.

To him, Chen Zi’s reason for taking so long to arrive was satisfactory, so he felt there was no need for any further disrespect.

Considering it was his responsibility to protect Chen Yang as his Dao Protector, he also understood the difficulties of serving such a master.

Chen Mei, on the other hand, maintained her indifferent expression, clearly unwilling to associate herself with Chen Zi.

Instead, she turned around and actually looked Lin Feng in the eyes before speaking.

"Lin Feng, right? My name is Chen Mei.

I’m Elena’s friend of sorts.

I’ve heard about you from her after she got back from Blackwood Forest—told me to keep an eye on you."

Chen Mei winked, her purple eyes shining with interest.

When Lin Feng heard what Chen Mei said, he breathed an imaginary sigh of relief as he thought to himself, Thankfully, they’re actually friends. If they weren’t, I’d probably be in a bit of trouble.

"However, I need to make sure you’re actually the person Elena told me about, so I need some kind of proof," Chen Mei said, a hint of mischief in her expression.

Although Feng wasn’t entirely sure whether she was being serious or just messing with him, he didn’t see any reason for her to lie.

After thinking for a few seconds, he reached into his bag of holding and brought out the "gift" Elena had given him before she left.

"Is this proof enough?" Feng asked, raising his right hand so she could clearly see what he held.

It was a golden medallion featuring the design of a dragon encircling a golden spear, set against the backdrop of a large city.

A faint spiritual energy pressure emanated from it.

When Chen Mei saw the medallion, her eyes widened in shock, as if she couldn’t believe Elena had actually given something this precious to Lin Feng.

She stared at it for a few seconds before taking a deep breath and saying, "That’s enough. I can’t believe she gave you something like that.

You should keep it in your Bag of Holding and make sure you don’t lose it.

If you do, Elena is definitely going to be angry at you."

Lin Feng, noticing her reaction, had a strange expression on his face as he put the medallion back into his Bag of Holding.

I kind of expected this thing to be important, but I didn’t think it was this important—important enough to make the Young Miss of the Chen Clan react like that.

As he secured the medallion, he couldn’t shake the feeling that his Bag of Holding was burning, like he was carrying some kind of priceless treasure that everyone around him was just waiting to steal.

Chen Mei held a thoughtful expression, her purple eyes shimmering like majestic gems under the afternoon sun.

Her black hair swayed gently in the wind, and even Lin Feng had to admit that, in terms of beauty, the young miss of the Chen Clan was undoubtedly on par with Elena.

Noticing Lin Feng staring at her, Chen Mei suddenly flashed a beautiful smile—yet there was something dangerous hidden within her gaze, like a predator toying with its prey.

"I don’t think Elena would appreciate you staring at her friend like that."

Lin Feng snapped out of his thoughts, realizing he had been daydreaming.

A hint of embarrassment crept onto his face as he awkwardly scratched his head.

"Sorry, I just thought you were just as pretty as Elena, so I ended up staring for a bit."

Chen Mei’s purple eyes sparkled as an idea seemed to form in her mind.

Slowly, she stepped toward Lin Feng, closing the distance between them until they were only a few inches apart.

Feng’s heart started to pound.

While he could be considered bold when it came to girls, that was mostly because he lacked the social awareness to gauge the proper distance between men and women.

He simply said whatever was on his mind without worrying about the consequences.

But now, faced with Chen Mei’s sudden approach, he couldn’t help but think—

Crap, did I just do something dumb?

Before he could explain himself, Chen Mei suddenly leaned in, her breath warm against his ear as she whispered, "Right now, I don’t really know what Elena sees in you to treat you so well.

But since you protected Uncle Chen Li, I can at least tell that you’re a good person."

She paused for a moment before continuing, her voice carrying a sharp edge.

"But if you think you can win over Elena with that level of cultivation, you’d better give up now.

In your current state, you’re far too weak to carry her burden."
