Chapter 79: Inquisitors
Chapter 79: Inquisitors
When Chen Mei heard the words from Chen Zi, her expression froze, as if shocked, before a cold, murderous aura suddenly began emanating from her body.
"Who approved them entering Silverpine City?" Chen Mei spoke with a frosty expression.
Clearly, she didn’t like the Church of Heaven establishing a branch within Silverpine, though she had a hunch about who was bold enough to give them the opportunity.
Chen Li, who had been silent this entire time, suddenly spoke grimly.
It was clear he also didn’t like someone else meddling in Silverpine City’s affairs. "Was it the Wei Clan?"
Chen Zi, who had a grave expression on his face, nodded before saying, "Yes. The head of the Wei Clan, Wei Yuntai, approved the Church of Heaven establishing their branch within their lands in exchange for their young patriarch, once he breaks through to Foundation Establishment, being accepted as a High Inquisitor of the Church of Heaven.
This stipulation also includes other members of the Wei Clan—if their talent is good enough—to join under Wei Jun as his subordinates."
Huang Bei had an apprehensive expression on his face upon hearing this news, while Yan Hao and Yan Li, on the other hand, looked confused, as if they didn’t know what was going on.
"Is it bad that the Church of Heaven is trying to establish a branch in Silverpine?" Yan Hao asked, looking toward Huang Bei.
"That’s right. Isn’t the Church a good group of people?" Yan Li also spoke in turn, trying to figure out the problem.
Lin Feng, who didn’t have a good impression of the Church of Heaven due to their worship of the Heavenly Dao, maintained a neutral expression.
He didn’t want to reveal his dislike of the Church for now, considering that the Church of Heaven was the orthodox religion in the Eastern Territories.
Regardless of whether the Church of Heaven was actually composed of good people or not, just the fact that they revered this damn Heavenly Dao made Feng automatically dislike them, he grumbled to himself before continuing his thoughts.
Besides, what makes those guys the orthodox religion anyway?
All of a sudden, he heard a mechanical voice inside his head.
[The Church of Heaven is powerful because they have the ability to directly communicate with the "Heavens."]
When Feng heard this, he was shocked.
It was rare for the system to speak to him of its own accord, so he quickly took advantage of the opportunity to ask more relevant questions.
"What do you mean by directly communicate? Does this mean the Church can talk to the Heavenly Dao?" Feng asked the system, eager to know the answer.
The reason was simple—if the Church of Heaven truly had the ability to speak with the Heavenly Dao, then if he could somehow infiltrate them, he might find a way to communicate with the Heavenly Dao himself and ask some very difficult questions.
Like what this damn Heaven’s criteria is for choosing who gets to cultivate or not, Feng grumbled to himself as he waited for a response.
Unfortunately for him, all he heard from the system was silence.
It was as if it hadn’t even heard his question, offering him no further answers.
Lin Feng sighed to himself as he thought
I kinda expected it not to answer my question, but the least it could have done was tell me something about the destiny of the human race or something vague along those lines.
[Responding to host: The system cannot answer any question related to the destiny of the human race.]
When Feng once again heard the mechanical voice in his head, he paused before a feeling of helplessness bubbled up inside him.
It was as if the system were purposefully teasing him—giving him bits and pieces of information without actually telling him anything.
Does this thing really have no personality?
Feng thought to himself in confusion. He recalled having the same thought a few days ago when it felt like the system had started to develop some sort of ego back when he was fighting Yi Bei.
Whatever, this isn’t really a problem I should be thinking about right now, especially since the system hasn’t done anything to harm me since I got it.
In fact, all of my achievements are basically because of the system.
Without it, I’d probably still be a Broken Soul wandering in the Blackwood Forest—if I was even alive to have these kinds of thoughts.
Feng shifted his attention back to the conversation, listening as Huang Bei spoke.
"Don’t you guys remember what happened to Senior Chen Su a few years back? Don’t you remember him getting injured by a mysterious group of people?" Huang Bei said, looking a bit grim.
Yan Li and Yan Hao, starting to understand what Huang Bei was implying, had shocked expressions on their faces as they quickly opened their mouths.
Yet before they could voice the thoughts in their heads—
"Silence! Don’t say anything! Unless you don’t want your lives anymore!" Chen Li suddenly shouted, his voice hoarse as he began looking around anxiously, as if worried someone was eavesdropping on their conversation.
Yan Hao and Yan Li, seeing Old Chen’s reaction, quickly shut their mouths.
They even covered them with their hands, trying to stop themselves from saying anything further, making them look a bit comical.
"You never speak ill of the Church of Heaven.
They are the emissaries of the Heavenly Dao.
Anyone who speaks ill of them can be branded a heretic and will be hunted down by the church’s inquisitors," Chen Li said while still glancing around, worried that someone might be listening in on them.
This was the first time Lin Feng had seen the influence of the Church of Heaven outside Raincloud Village.
It was clear that even here, the Heavenly Dao—and by extension, the Church of Heaven—were feared and idolized by almost everyone in the Eastern Territories.
As Lin Feng thought to himself
I should probably be careful about what I say when it comes to the Church, especially considering I don’t even really like them already—unless I want to be branded a heretic.
