Chapter 78: A Branch Of The Church of Heaven
"Yes, I hit you. Did you think you could do whatever you wanted in the Chen Clan?" Chen Zi spoke coldly, his gaze sharp as he stared down at Chen Yang.
"Even if your father were here, he wouldn’t dare kill Chen Li so openly—especially considering his value to the clan. That can only mean one thing... you acted on your own!"
Lin Feng watched the scene unfold, his eyes widening in shock.
Even he hadn’t expected this powerful newcomer to not only stop Chen Mei from seriously injuring Chen Yang but also slap him so hard that his face turned red.
This guy seems strong, Feng thought to himself, his gaze falling on the weapon the man carried—a long purple sword exuding a powerful spiritual energy aura.
Yet, the longer Feng looked at it, the stronger an unsettling feeling grew within him.
It was as if his very soul was on the verge of being sliced to pieces.
When Chen Yang heard Chen Zi’s words, all of his courage suddenly popped like a balloon.
His body trembled as fear took hold.
Even he knew that what he had done was purely out of vengeance—he had tricked Yi Bei and hired mercenaries to hunt down Chen Li.
Though he hadn’t intended to kill him, only to scare him into submission so he would help clear his Qi pathways and increase his talent, the look in Chen Zi’s eyes made him shiver.
He swallowed whatever excuse he was about to utter.
Chen Zi then turned sharply, his gaze landing on Chen Li, who had just finished healing Lin Feng.
With a slight bow of his head, he spoke respectfully.
"I pay my respects to Senior Chen Li. Since nothing too severe has happened, I hope Senior will let bygones be bygones and let this matter rest. In exchange, I will personally ensure that Chen Yang is punished with the Hundred Drops of Agony."
When Huang Bei and the others heard those words, they shivered, a deep sense of pity washing over them for Chen Yang.
"Damn, the Hundred Drops of Agony... Chen Yang is in for a really bad time," Yan Hao said, sounding pleased.
"Serves that bastard right," Yan Li scoffed.
"I knew something was off about this whole thing. Even if Chen Baole disliked the Old Man, would he really be dumb enough to order an assassination right outside Silverpine City? He can’t be that much of an idiot, right?"
"You idiots should just be grateful we all made it out of this unscathed," Huang Bei grumbled.
"Now that Senior Chen Zi is here, I doubt there’ll be any more surprises." He winced in pain as the last of the poison was purged from his body through the Life Flow Needles.
"Thank you, Old Chen. I really thought I was gonna die there," Huang Bei said, looking down at his body, now free of the emerald-green blotches of poison.
"I should be the one thanking all of you for risking your lives for me," Chen Li said with gratitude, bowing his head slightly.
Then, his expression shifted, becoming cold and indifferent as his gaze landed on Chen Zi.
The elder stood there, gripping Chen Yang by the collar of his robe.
It was clear Chen Zi had knocked him unconscious long ago.
"If you’re really sorry, then why did you only show up now?" Chen Li’s voice was calm, as if the situation had nothing to do with him.
"If Chen Mei and the others hadn’t protected me, I’d be dead by now. Is this the kind of message Chen Baole wants to send me?"
Chen Mei, who had already regained her usual energetic self, walked back to Chen Li’s side.
With a slight bow of her head, she greeted respectfully, "I pay my respects to Uncle Chen Li."
Unlike his cold demeanor toward Chen Li, Chen Li’s expression softened when he saw Chen Mei.
Smiling, he gently helped her up and replied, "There’s no need to be so formal with me, little girl. I know how hard it’s been for you."
When Chen Mei heard Chen Li’s words, she almost burst into tears.
But as she noticed Lin Feng and the others watching her, she quickly wiped them away, forcing a bright smile.
"Uncle Chen Li, next time you go out, you should inform my father so we can send stronger escorts with you," she said cheerfully.
"Although these guys are pretty decent, our enemies don’t exactly play by the rules."
As she spoke, her gaze flickered toward the unconscious Chen Yang before shifting to Chen Zi, her expression turning indifferent.
Chen Zi’s face stiffened the moment he met her gaze.
A hint of guilt flashed in his eyes, as if silently apologizing for something. After a brief hesitation, he finally lowered his head and said, "I pay my respects to the Young Miss."
Chen Mei stared at him for a moment before giving a slight nod, not even bothering to respond.
Chen Zi tried to force a smile at Chen Mei’s response, but after a brief pause, he shifted his focus back to Chen Li and continued.
"To be honest, Senior Chen Li, I was already aware of this idiot’s plans," he admitted, glancing at the unconscious Chen Yang.
"My goal was to make sure that you, Chen Mei, and Chen Yang didn’t suffer any serious injuries if a fight broke out.
In particular, I was under strict orders to ensure your absolute safety, Senior Chen Li.
However, something unexpected happened in Silverpine City, and I had to deal with it before coming here. I just didn’t expect Chen Yang to go so far as to threaten your life."
Chen Zi spoke with sincerity, his tone making it clear that he wasn’t lying—something had indeed happened in Silverpine City that had forcefully delayed his arrival.
Chen Mei’s eyes narrowed at his words.
"What happened?" she asked, a trace of concern in her voice.
Chen Zi’s expression darkened, and a flicker of anger appeared in his eyes as he replied grimly, "The Church of Heaven is trying to establish a branch in Silverpine City."
