Chapter 52: Edgar’s Quest [2]

"Sent me?" Gabriel raised a confused brow. "How did you come to that conclusion?"

"Your walk, the way you speak—everything about you screams confidence. Boy, you’re not just any newbie. Moreover, I can tell you’re very knowledgeable about the guilds and the history of this world, so technically, you have no business here."

He didn’t act surprised despite seeing how easily Edgar had analyzed him. He had expected this from the start. After all, as a spy, Edgar was someone extremely observant and sharp.

’He probably thinks I was sent by someone to expose him,’ he thought.

"Well, you’re right. I’m not exactly a newbie," Gabriel said. "But no one sent me."

"Then how may I help you?"

Calmly, he held the middleman’s gaze and began to speak.

"I had a fallout with the Holy Church," he said.

"A fallout with those pretentious bastards?" Edgar scoffed, his tone carrying a hint of anger. "That’s rare."

Gabriel hid a smile when he realized he had pushed the right button.

In his past life, it was a commonly known fact among Players that Edgar DarkMore loathed the Holy Church with a passion, as seen in his town when introducing the guilds.

He was notorious for giving quests to sabotage Church members.

These ranged from destroying their properties, assassinating key figures, and even as extreme as killing a cardinal of a branch.

Although his reasons for constantly antagonizing the Church were never publicly revealed, Gabriel once stumbled upon a player who had taken an assignment from Edgar to rescue eleven children.

According to the post, the quest was extremely difficult—he had to fight through several apostles of the Church and had died about ten times.

With each death, a player lost levels. By the time their status hit zero, their character would be deleted, forcing them to start all over from the beginner village while their peers were already ahead.

Despite that, the player had kept pushing because the quest promised three level-ups and a rare Epic-rank skill scroll.

Gabriel had approached Edgar specifically for this reason. His current goal was to over-level himself as much as possible.

Even though he was far stronger than most adventurers at this time, once the players arrived, it would be difficult to convince them to follow him—since they would judge based on level.

Unlike regular NPCs who couldn’t see each other’s levels—restricted only to monsters—players and select individuals were capable of seeing one another’s levels.

Unless I find that super rare item that can hide my level, there’s no way around it.

Right now, his major goal was to trigger the quest. Fortunately, on his way here, Gabriel had been practicing.

"While I was hunting in the wilderness, I encountered a priest who was trying to purchase eleven elven children from a group of traders."

He noticed a slight change in Edgar’s expression and continued. "One of the kids reminded me a lot of someone I once knew, so I rescued her... and crushed the priest’s jaw when he tried to attack me."

"Bold of you." Edgar didn’t know if he should call the youth before him brave or stupid for going against a powerful faction like the Church.

"Let me guess, you’ve been declared an enemy of the Church?"

Gabriel didn’t respond. He simply showed the warning message he had received.

Edgar nodded, and for a brief moment, felt a sense of camaraderie. Not many people disliked the Church. In fact, they were widely respected and adored, so finding a like-minded soul was rare.

But still—what was he supposed to do with this information?

It was at that moment Gabriel revealed that he had done some research and found out that the Hero-ranked Edgar was also an enemy of the Church.

"I believe with the two of us joining hands, we can expose the Church for what it truly is."

Edgar laughed. "You think it’s that easy? From your aura alone, I can tell you’re not even up to Level 30. Tell me, boy—how do you plan to do that?"

"How can I convince you to trust me?" Gabriel asked.

A thoughtful expression crossed Edgar’s face. He seemed deep in thought until his eyes suddenly glinted as he held Gabriel’s gaze.

"Look, this is what will happen."

A small smile appeared on Gabriel’s face when he heard that.

"There’s a shipment leaving in two days. Elven children. All tagged for auction by a bunch of slave traders operating under some fake orphanage banner near the eastern border."

He walked to the side of the room and pulled out a faded scroll, which contained a detailed map of the terrain.

"No one knows. No one can know. You take this mission, and you go alone. If they catch you, you’re not my man. You’re just another madman with a sword."

[Ding! Quest Received]

With a smile, Gabriel muttered, "I accept."

When he left the room, Edgar stared at his disappearing back and thought with a cruel smile:

’Let’s see you survive this,’ he muttered. ’If you do, I’ll reward you handsomely. But if you fail, those savages will probably cut you apart.’

In his mind, Gabriel was just another cocky, impulsive brat. He never expected him to survive the mission. But if he did... then perhaps he’d take him in as a student.

After leaving the building, Gabriel quickly purchased a bottle of strawberry green wine and headed to Korran’s shop. There, he bought a full-body obsidian armor set with a raven-shaped helmet that exposed only his shimmering pair of electric blue eyes.

The armor only granted +10 Strength, but that was fine. He had purchased it with the sole intention of hiding his identity.

After paying, he left and made his way to the nearest train station leading to the eastern borders between the Valerian and Edgeburne Kingdoms.
