Chapter 34: Purpleback Ant

Farming EP points was one of the reasons he had volunteered.

’Even if the experience points aren’t much, I can always get EP... the more EP I accumulate, the stronger I can get.’

"How long is he going to stand there?" Sophie narrowed her eyes.

She couldn’t believe how a human could stand in a single spot for hours while moving at such intense speed.

Soon, night came, and the two vehicles came to a stop.

"We’ll spend the night here," Scarlet announced, and everyone moved to set up tents.

Apart from a few low-level monsters that attacked them, the night passed swiftly. The next morning, the group continued their journey.

This time around, Liam had volunteered to deal with the monsters.

The large warrior swung his massive hammer, turning the heads of monsters into hot tofu. He continued this for a couple of hours, and deep frowns appeared on his face.

"How did that little runt stay up here the entire day?" Sweat glistened on his forehead.

He had only been there for three hours, and his legs were already trembling. A few times, he had even fallen off the moving vehicle.

"Dammit, what trick did he use?!" In the end, to avoid falling off, the warrior had no choice but to return inside.

A few more adventurers tried, but they all had to return inside. Some even fell off, only to be saved by the vehicles behind them.

This left them wondering how Gabriel had pulled it off.

So far, after Gabriel, the only person who had lasted was Lilly.

The petite beauty with her daggers was a true menace, effortlessly sending the monsters to the afterlife.

’Seems she’s not just all talk,’ Gabriel inwardly thought when she returned inside.

This continued for the next couple of hours, and by nightfall, they arrived at their final destination... the Eastern Hills.

One after the other, the adventurers exited their vehicles, feeling the change in the atmosphere.

An ancient ruined city sprawled out before them.

The city was destroyed and overgrown with green vines and moss.

Gabriel’s eyes swept around. Although he was a regressor, he had no knowledge about this city or the ruins.

The reason for this was because the ruin exploration event happened far before the official launch of the game.

One of Gabriel’s goals was to start his own guild and recruit both players and NPCs in the early stages of the game to gain a footing in the Realm of Ascendency before the convergence.

It was one of the reasons this ruin exploration was important to him, and the reason he had entered into a partnership with Damian—he needed enough resources to fund his guild.

Gabriel then raised his gaze, staring at the horizon where he could see a giant mountain that was easily a few hundred meters tall, radiating a silver glow.

’I guess that will most likely be the ruin.’

Naturally, the imposing mountain caught the attention of the others as well—it was the first thing they noticed.

"It’s beautiful," Alice and Sophie spoke at once, their eyes glowing with awe.

The silver radiance emitting from the mountain seemed to provide a faint light for the ruined city.

"Everyone stick together. Although the rewards are individual, remember this is a joint operation!" Scarlet shouted loudly as they advanced further toward the mountain.

Everyone nodded in agreement and began to advance. The city was built with ancient architecture, so using automobiles was impossible.

Swoosh! Swoosh!

The group had barely taken a couple of steps when a purple shadow dashed at them from the side.

"Flame Burst!" Old man Khrome’s raspy voice echoed as a magical circle appeared mid-air, and from it, a cyclone of burning flame erupted, devouring the monster.

The group quickly rushed over, and frowns appeared on their faces.

Because the monster had turned to ash, the only thing left behind was its monster core.

"What kind of monster do you think it is?" Sophie asked as she crouched low.

"It’s quite hard to tell," Khrome replied. "I reacted before even seeing it clearly."

The group didn’t spend too much time there and continued moving. Gabriel remained behind, and once there was sufficient distance between him and the others, he muttered under his breath:

[Extract!]

[Do you wish to extract LV10 Purpleback Worker Ant?! Cost: 5 EP]

Purpleback ants? A trace of surprise flashed through Gabriel’s expression when he saw the name of the monster.

In Realm of Ascendency, there were several types of ant creatures, and one of the most troublesome types was the Purpleback Ant due to their extreme speed, intelligence, and coordination.

However, they were rather rare. Even in his previous life, Gabriel had only encountered them twice—and both times, they had been very troublesome to deal with.

From killing several monsters on his way here, Gabriel had raised his EP from 50 to 77. He didn’t hesitate to extract from the Purpleback Worker Ant.

[+3 Perception]

In the end, he extracted [+3 Perception] and rushed back to rendezvous with the group, who hadn’t noticed his absence.

For the next couple of minutes, they continued walking in silence and didn’t encounter any monsters, to their surprise.

"Vice leader, you said the monsters tampered with the invisible protective barrier, right?" Liam asked with a frown. "And so far, apart from the monster from earlier, we’re yet to encounter any more."

"That’s what I was just about to say as well." Sophie frowned. "Did someone come before us and somehow wipe out the monsters?"

"But there are no traces of monsters or fighting," Alice pointed out. "This place seems as if it hasn’t been visited in decades."

"More like centuries," Cassie added, her gaze fixed on a broken water fountain covered in moss.

"We keep moving," Scarlet spoke and began to walk forward.

"Tsk. So robotic. Does she even smile?" Cassie whispered to Alice.

"Very rare," Alice sighed. A gleam of melancholy flickered in her eyes. "But it didn’t use to be like this."

At that moment, Gabriel walked past them, and Cassie’s expression changed slightly.

"Right. Another emotionless one is him."

The group rounded a giant stone, and after walking for approximately twenty minutes, they arrived at the foot of the mountain.
