Chapter 35: 10 Vs 100

Gabriel’s gaze fell on the ground where he noticed distinct runic engravings shimmering faintly.

Furthermore, the carvings seemed to be linked to monster cores embedded in small holes in the ground.

The others noticed it too. They stopped in their tracks, afraid it might be a booby trap or something dangerous.

"Don’t be scared," Gabriel said, stepping forward.

"Hey!" Sophie called out in a worried voice.

"It’s fine. These are harnesses," Gabriel explained. "They’re the work of rune smiths. It was probably what had been powering the invisible protective barrier all this while."

He came to a stop in front of one of the holes, and inside, the monster core was missing.

"The barrier became visible because something disrupted the energy transmission from this core."

After seeing that Gabriel seemed fine, Scarlett stepped forward as well, followed by Alice, then Sophie, Liam, Cassie, the old man Khrome, and the rest of the group.

Everyone stared at Gabriel with mixed expressions, wondering how he was able to detect all this with a simple glance.

Scarlett glanced at the spot where he stood and noticed that a core was indeed missing, and the runes were dull.

"You’re right," she muttered, furrowing her brows as her eyes scanned the surroundings until she found a monster core not too far from the hole.

Picking it up, she placed it where she assumed it rightfully belonged.

Click!

A small sound echoed—then...

Rumble! Rumble!

The ground began to tremble violently, as if an earthquake was about to occur.

The adventurers’ expressions paled as they struggled to stay on their feet amidst the fierce tremor.

If not for the fact that they were all Level 30 and above, they would have embarrassingly fallen over.

The only two who remained rooted in place were Scarlett and Gabriel.

"You must be kidding me!" Liam nearly spat blood at the sight.

He was fighting to stay standing, and yet... this runt, clearly weaker than him, didn’t even budge.

What sort of bullshittery was this!?

The others were just as stunned and felt the urge to cry. The more they tried to understand how he was doing it, the more intense their headaches grew—until they simply gave up.

Some time later, the trembling subsided.

Gabriel looked around. Everything seemed normal, as if nothing had changed. He picked up a rock nearby and hurled it into the distance.

It didn’t seem like he put much power into the throw, yet the rock flew at a speed most present couldn’t even follow.

It soared across the ground and struck something in the empty air—then they saw it.

Everyone’s eyes widened as ripples spread through the air.

"Now we don’t need to worry about someone sneaking up on us while we’re exploring the ruins," Gabriel said calmly.

"Are we locked in?" someone asked.

"Yes, but we can always return once we’re done," he replied.

Most of them found the idea quite reasonable.

"What now?" Sophie asked.

"Look!" Liam suddenly pointed at a stone door protruding from the mountain. He rushed over.

"Let’s get this party started already!" he laughed, raising his heavy hammer.

Gabriel’s blue eyes widened slightly. "Wait!!!"

BANG!

It was too late. The heavy hammer slammed into the stone door violently.

Rumble! Rumble!

A mechanical echo came from beneath the ground.

"Huh?" Liam looked slightly dazed as he stepped back from the large stone door.

"What’s happening?" someone muttered, dread pooling in their stomach.

Another gulped. "I think Liam triggered something!"

"That muscle head..." Gabriel resisted the urge to facepalm.

"Everyone, get ready for a fight!" Scarlett shouted, a long slim blade catching the faint gleam of the moon appearing in her grasp. She was a swordswoman, and a skilled one at that.

Thanks to the silver radiance from the mountain, the surroundings were already fairly bright, but after the activation of countless skills, the air became even more illuminated.

Gabriel didn’t panic like the others. Thanks to Undying Will, he remained calm. He summoned Crimson Judgement, the blade trembling with excitement, as if eager to drink blood.

Scarlett stood in front of the group, sword drawn, eyes sharp and alert.

Soon, the mechanical sounds ceased, and an eerie silence descended.

The adventurers didn’t feel relieved. If anything, their anxiety grew. Their arms trembled as they struggled to keep their skills active.

Then, it finally happened.

Different parts of the earth began to split open.

Seeing square holes forming before them, a few flinched back and instinctively charged their skills with so much mana that it began pulsing—threatening to explode in their faces.

At that precise moment, from the square holes, figures began to emerge.

They were roughly two meters tall, with uneven black rocky bodies.

Their eyes and palms shimmered with a red glow.

"Golems!" Alice shouted, her voice carrying a haunting dread.

Sophie made a quick estimate, and her eyes widened even more.

"There are over a hundred... and they’re all Level 15, with a few reaching Level 20." She frowned, glancing at Scarlett. "Should we retreat? We’re clearly outnumbered."

"No," Scarlett replied firmly. "We’ve already come this far."

"It’s a hundred versus ten. Sister, I think we should retreat, regroup, and come back later." Alice warned.

Even though the golems were low level, their sheer numbers made them a real threat. The others silently agreed.

"Even if we retreat now, do you think the golems will magically return to where they came from?" Gabriel spoke up. "They’ll chase us. We’re already their targets, so I say we fight here and end it once and for all!"

Without waiting for anyone’s approval, he charged toward the monstrous army of golems. Scarlett followed close behind.

"Y-You both!" Sophie was at a loss for words before she sighed. "Very well then!"

At that moment, the swarm of over a hundred golems surged forward, emitting a profound killing intent.
