Chapter 56: Lost Voice
Elena’s slap landed crisply on Mary’s face.
Slap!
The sharp sound echoed in the air. Mary covered her face, looking at Elena in disbelief.
"Aunt, you... You actually hit me for that woman?"
Elena glared at Mary, and when she saw the palm print on her face, a hint of distress flashed in her eyes.
Although Mary wasn’t her biological child, she was the one who had raised her.
But this time, Mary had gone too far, and she simply couldn’t tolerate it anymore.
Cecilia was also stunned by the slap.
After all, she was just a distant granddaughter. She never expected that Elena would hit Mary for her.
On the other hand, seeing that Elena still wasn’t comforting her, Mary quickly turned her hurt gaze toward James instead.
James merely shook his head.
She was infuriated.
"Oh, I see! You’ve both put your trust in a distant granddaughter that you just found, but not me? She has even poisoned you to turn mute, and yet you still side with her?!"
Cecilia sneered.
"Who said they’re mute?"
Elena looked at Cecilia with a puzzled expression.
"The medicine I made has a recovery period. During that period, they will temporarily lose their voice."
Mary snorted.
"A temporary recovery period? What an excuse! How long will this ‘temporary’ period last? I’m afraid even you don’t know!"
Cecilia thought for a moment and replied.
"Although the duration of silence varies depending on the severity of each person’s illness, I can assure you—Great-uncle and Great-aunt only need three days to recover."
"Three days? Fine, I’ll give you three days. If Uncle and Aunt are not recovered by then, you better not show your face in front of them again!"
With that, Mary left while stomping her high heels.
She had consulted experts, and they all said it would take at least three years for Elena and James’s voices to recover. The occupational disease’s root causes have yet to find the best treatment.
‘Cecilia Morrison, just wait to be embarrassed!’
After Mary left, Cecilia was also about to leave, but Elena had stopped her.
She looked at Cecilia with a bit of concern.
Three days was rather a risky bet. She believed in Cecilia, but she knew her own condition. Losing her voice wasn’t something that could easily be recovered. Before this, the doctor had already told her that her lung disease had reached the stage where she could even possibly lose her voice. So, the reason why she lost her voice during this time was likely due to her deteriorating condition, not caused by Cecilia’s medicine.
Cecilia saw her concern and shook her head.
"Great-aunt, don’t worry about me. In three days, you will understand."
Elena thought about her words and nodded.
After that, Cecilia took care of a few matters at the Mitchell residence on behalf of Elena and James, who were unable to manage them themselves after losing their voices. When she returned to the hotel, it was already very late.
Emma had eaten with Edwin and was already asleep. Cecilia quietly entered the room.
After taking a shower, she intended to sleep immediately, but she couldn’t seem to.
Thinking about the suffering Alex went through yesterday, she got up and threw a jacket over her pajamas, leaving the room.
‘I need to see him. After all, he is only a four-year-old child; how could he not be hurt by such treatment?’
Reaching Steven’s room, she knocked on the door.
Steven had just finished his shower. Hearing the knock, he frowned.
‘It’s so late at night now. Who could it be?’
He put on his robe and opened the door, only to see Cecilia yawning.
She looked a bit different from her usual neat attire—today, she was wearing pajamas that had little polka dots on them, making her look much more playful.
However, that familiar scent of gardenia was still there.
Steven was a bit surprised.
"Miss Morrison? Is there something you need at this hour?"
She replied nonchalantly, "Nothing special, I just came to check."
‘Check? On who? Me?’
He blinked, his chest muscles partially exposed under the robe.
"By the way, is your son asleep?"
‘She’s asking about Alex? What does she mean by that? Oh, if she knows Alex is asleep, she probably might invite me for a midnight snack. I’ve already brushed my teeth, but...’
"Alright, sure."
Cecilia gave him a confused glance.
"I mean, he’s already asleep."
Upon hearing that, she paused to think—of course, he was probably already asleep by now. Going here this late had been selfish of her.
She nodded and turned to leave.
Now, Steven was confused.
‘Weren’t we going to have a midnight snack together? Did I say something wrong?’
Perplexed, he re-entered his room and sent Zane a message.
[Join me for a midnight snack.]
Zane replied, [Yes!]

Three days later.
Cecilia was still asleep early in the morning when a series of phone calls woke her.
She answered.
"Cecilia, it’s been three days, and you lost! Uncle and Aunt have been taken to the hospital. Prepare to go to jail!"
Her sleepiness vanished instantly. She sat up and hurried to the hospital.
