Chapter 55: Medicine
Chapter 55: Medicine
The expert took the medicine and examined it closely before sniffing it, a look of surprise appearing on his face.
This medicine was composed of complex ingredients, yet just the smell was enough to clear up one of his lungs; it was impressive...
Mary stared at the medicine, thinking Elena and James had lost their minds.
"Aunt, did you really bring this out? Aren’t you ashamed? I spent a lot of money to invite Expert Collins, a leader in the pulmonary field. Take this garbage away now..."
She was about to reach out and throw the medicine on the table when Collins stopped her with his hand.
He looked surprised and turned to Elena and James.
"Mrs. Mitchell, can I take this packet of medicine back to study it?"
Elena nodded. "Of course."
Receiving the affirmative answer, Collins immediately stood up and walked out with the medicine.
He had a hunch he was about to discover a medicine that would be ground-breaking in the medical world.
The next day.
Cecilia had just returned from a morning run to the hotel and saw Samuel waiting for her in the lobby.
Him again?
She ignored him and walked straight toward the elevator, where Samuel was talking nonstop right behind her.
"Cecilia, long time no see! Grandma said she missed you and wanted to invite you over for a meal... Oh, and it’s just a meal, so don’t worry... Grandma had always hoped we would get married. She always thought we were suitable for each other, and she still sees you as her granddaughter-in-law."
The more Cecilia listened, the more irritated she was. After she quickly got into the elevator, the chatter behind her stopped. She was about to turn and close the elevator when she saw a shadow appear in front of her.
She spoke in annoyance, "Are you done? Why tell me about your family’s affairs? Marry you...,"
She turned around to see Steven’s face, startling her and stopping her words.
‘Marry you? Dream on!’
However, Steven only heard the last part.
A hint of surprise flashed in his eyes.
‘She said she wanted to marry me?’
He smiled.
"Miss Morrison, is that... a confession?"
Cecilia was speechless; now she needed to deal with another one.
"You are too self..."
‘Absorbed, aren’t you?’
Her words abruptly stopped as she suddenly remembered her situation had changed. Before, she didn’t know Alex was her son and spoke to him however she pleased. But now, she needed to take Alex from him. If she angered him, the outcome might turn out worse.
For Alex’s sake, she endured.
"... Handle your own affairs."
She gestured at the elevator button, signaling Steven to choose his floor.
Seeing her avoiding his eyes, Steven felt oddly pleased.
‘Is she embarrassed?’
"By the way, Grandma is awake. Thanks for that."
"Regarding the matter you mentioned about finding someone, just give me more information and I’ll get back to you soon."
Cecilia nodded.
"Don’t mention it, but there’s no need to do any of that anymore."
Steven was puzzled. "Why?"
"I’ve already found them."
He understood, feeling a bit disappointed that he was not the person who had helped her. Somehow, this made him feel frustrated.
"If you ever need anything else, you can come to me; the agreement still stands."
Cecilia responded casually, but her thoughts were different.
‘Even if I asked you to give me my son back, it’s not like you would just agree.’
"It’s nothing, as long as I can see Alex more. That child is endearing."
After saying this, she realized how strange her words sounded and added, "You have a son, and I have a daughter. They really like to play together. Mr. Lawrence, you wouldn’t oppose the kids from being friends, would you?"
How could Steven disagree? He was more than willing, since her words made him misunderstand her intentions—a suggestion of family union.
"No problem," he said, a barely noticeable smile playing at the corners of his mouth.
The elevator soon reached Cecilia’s floor. She waved her hand in a farewell gesture to Steven before walking out.
As she got to her room’s door, she received a call from Elena.
"Auntie?"
"..."
There was silence on the other end of the phone.
Cecilia felt like something bad was about to happen.
Half an hour later, she stood at the Mitchell family’s doorstep.
Upon entering, she was met with Mary glaring at her fiercely.
"Oh, Cecilia! What on earth did you give Uncle and Aunt? Now, they’ve lost their voices!"
Startled, Cecilia was about to respond when Mary shoved her hard, nearly sending her sprawling.
Mary continued to berate her.
"Stay away from them! I’ve investigated you. You’re just an unfaithful woman!"
James frowned, gesturing for her to stop. However, Mary was not about to miss this opportunity and continued her rant.
"I also found out you used to be a mute, and now you’ve also turned Aunt and Uncle mute! I bet you’re just an old hag with no man to rely on, so you’re scheming to harm them and get their fortune!"
Cecilia’s gaze was icy as she spoke to Elena.
"The medicine I gave you has an adaptation period, so these are normal symptoms..."
However, Mary interrupted Cecilia.
"Stop pretending and just get out! Go find yourself a man and don’t come back here! Never set foot in the Mitchell family’s home again."
Upon hearing this, Elena sprang up and raised her hand.
Mary looked at Elena’s raised hand with even more arrogance.
‘Let’s see how Aunt will teach you a lesson!’
