Chapter 57: Recovery
Chapter 57: Recovery
In the hospital, Elena and James were half-lying on the hospital bed. They were growing increasingly worried after having lost their voice for several days now. After a hospital check-up, they were informed that there were some abnormal changes in their lungs, and they needed to be hospitalized for observation.
However, what they didn’t know about Cecilia’s medicine was that it was supposed to strengthen and fully regulate their lungs after initial treatment. This was a normal aftereffect of consuming it.
The moment the couple got admitted to the hospital, Mary found out and rushed over in her high heels, leaving loud clattering sounds in the hospital hallway.
Upon arrival, her trademark loud voice echoed.
"I told you that woman’s medicine was unreliable, but you just wouldn’t listen to me! This time, I won’t let her get away with it! I’ll call the police and have her arrested!"
She said those words loud enough for everyone outside the ward to hear, and they all started peeking inside to watch the commotion.
Elena needed peace and quiet, but Mary’s shouting only fueled her inner frustration.
Unfortunately, she couldn’t speak at the moment. She could only try to stop Mary with her eyes.
"How is that woman not here yet? She’s probably scared of going to jail and has already run away!"
Upon hearing this, Cecilia’s cold voice suddenly echoed from behind her.
"Shut up!"
Everyone turned to look at the doorway where Cecilia stood, with Elena’s face lighting up with delight.
So Cecilia hadn’t left them after all.
Cecilia walked into the ward, closing the door behind her as she approached Elena.
"Great-aunt Elena needs to rest peacefully now. All this noise will affect her mood and worsen her condition."
Mary looked at Cecilia with disdain.
"What nonsense are you spouting? Her condition has clearly worsened because of your medicine, and now you’re trying to pin the blame on me?!"
Cecilia ignored her and poured a glass of water, handing it to Elena.
Elena, feeling distressed, took the glass but didn’t drink from it; instead, she held Cecilia’s hand.
Seeing this, Mary became even more aggravated.
What a heartwarming scene!
She had been by the couple’s side for so many years, yet she couldn’t even compare to a distant granddaughter they only recently recognized...
Wait.
The more she thought about it, the more she didn’t feel right about it. She had proposed to take over James and Elena’s business long before, but they never agreed and only gave her management rights over a small factory that produced parts.
At that time, James had agreed, but Elena had firmly disagreed. She was afraid Mary might also develop a lung condition.
Now, it seemed Cecilia’s return might not be just a coincidence.
Instead—
They might be planning to entrust the business to her!
In that case, this business would no longer bear the Mitchell name!
Looking at James, he seemed to have been fooled by Elena as well.
Thinking this, she pointed at Cecilia and loudly declared.
"She came back to inherit Uncle’s business, didn’t she?!"
Elena and James were taken aback, exchanging looks of confusion with each other.
Mary, looking at Elena’s hypocritical face, already felt a deep-seated hatred.
"So that’s why some granddaughter suddenly appeared. It was all just so she could inherit the business. It’s not her who wants to steal everything from the Mitchell family—it’s you who wants to, Elena!"
James was the angriest upon hearing this.
He got off the bed, fuming as he tried to drag her out.
Mary shook off his hand and continued her tirade. “An outsider like you has been managing my Uncle’s business for so many years, and now that you’re running out of time, you want to hand it over to your relatives.
"However, you never expected that your so-called granddaughter would poison you into becoming a mute! Serves you right!"
Out of control, she disregarded the relationship they had over the years, not even realizing how much venom she had spewed.
Elena looked painfully at Mary, whom she had watched grow up. She felt only disappointment in her heart.
"Who said Great-aunt lost her voice?"
Finally speaking up, Cecilia addressed the situation between Elena, James, and Mary. It was not her place to intervene, considering their years-long relationship that resembled one between mother and daughter. Instead, she only focused on observing Elena’s condition.
"Did you drink any water today?"
Elena shook her head, puzzled.
"Just drink some water, and you will be able to speak. The recovery period is over; you just need to soothe your throat."
Skeptical, Elena took a sip of water from the cup.
James watched Elena anxiously as she coughed twice and tried to speak.
"I... I can speak! Honey, drink some water, quick!"
Thrilled, James quickly took a sip of water as well.
"Sweetheart... I can speak too!"
Amidst their excitement, several doctors entered the ward.
Cecilia had called them in before entering the room herself, thinking that an examination after their recovery would reassure the couple.
Half an hour later, the results came out—both of them were completely free from the occupational disease that had troubled them for years.
Doctors stood in the ward, incredulous as they stared at their reports.
"This is truly incredible..."
Elena and James were overjoyed; if their long-term disease could be cured, then they could treat the workers in the factory, too.
"Cecilia, could you let me use the formula for your medicine?"
