Chapter 54: Grandma is awake

In the hall, everyone began criticizing Steven.

"I never expected you, Steven, to be such a wolf in sheep’s clothing!"

"If Madam Marianne doesn’t wake up, the head of the family’s position should not change hands again. When Madam Marianne was diagnosed with cancer, she temporarily entrusted the management to you, but that doesn’t mean you have the people’s support!"

"Now, not only did you harm her, but you even brought in an illegitimate child from who knows where just so you could silence those opposing you and secure your position as the family head!"

Steven’s gaze grew more intense, and Alex could no longer hold back. He jumped out of his father’s arms, facing the crowd and shouting.

"Great Grandma will definitely wake up! Dad became the family head with his own abilities and through Great Grandma’s approval. You cannot speak ill of my dad!"

His small figure stood firmly in front of Steven, determined.

Tony had been looking for an excuse to target Alex, and seeing Alex step forward, he saw the perfect opportunity.

"You—an illegitimate child—dare to speak here?! I’m telling you, it’s because of you that Grandma won’t wake up!"

Alex never believed in such feudal superstitions, but those words were too harsh. He trembled all over, tears welling up in his eyes.

Steven had not planned to cause a big scene in the old residence. After all, Cecilia had assured him that Marianne would wake up, and he believed her. But upon witnessing this, he smashed the teacup in his hand with a loud bang.

Today, everyone present would have to kneel before Alex and apologize!

All of the Lawrence family’s rules would be overturned!

Just as he was about to stand up, a clear female voice suddenly interrupted his movement from the doorway.

"Who says Grandma won’t wake up? Grandma is already awake!"

The speaker at the door was Amy.

Everyone was taken aback. When did Amy return?

Since returning to the country, she had kept a low profile, avoiding any public appearances. Only Steven, Ethan, and Alex knew that she was back.

Nathan and Tony were utterly shocked; their expressions were one of horror, as if they had just consumed flies.

They had long arranged for someone to keep track of Amy’s return, planning to take over the Lawrence family before she brought back the will. Who would have thought she had already returned?

This woman truly knew how to ruin things!

Once people realized what she said, they rushed into Marianne’s room all at once.

Though Marianne was still in bed, she was indeed awake. At the moment, she was sitting up and leaning against the headboard.

Steven, holding Alex’s hand, walked into the room and looked at the people crowded in there with a cold expression.

"Grandma just woke up. All of you, leave the room. Don’t disturb her rest."

The branch family members exchanged glances and then quietly stepped back toward the doorway, each of them craning their necks to peer inside.

Nathan approached Marianne’s bedside first, reaching out to hold her hand. However, she pulled away, which nearly made his expression falter.

He spoke up with a fawning smile, "Mom, you’re finally awake. I need you to stand up for me. The child Steven brought has stirred much discontent within the family. It’s time to resolve it. After all, he’s not a legitimate child of the Lawrence family..."

Tony chimed in as well.

"Yes, Grandma, you wouldn’t believe how they bullied me!"

Marianne sneered coldly.

"Alex is a legitimate child of the Lawrence family!"

"Amy has already told me everything that happened while I was unconscious. Steven earned his position as the family head back then through fair competition and proving his capability. I have officially entrusted him with the Lawrence family’s leadership. If any of you dare to oppose him, I won’t hesitate to expel you from this family!"

With those words, everyone fell silent.

Unable to hold back any longer, Alex threw himself into Marianne’s embrace while crying.

"Great Grandma, I’m so glad you’re okay. I missed you so much..."

Nathan wanted to say more, but Marianne didn’t spare him a glance and continued.

"I’m tired; you all should leave. I’ll be fine with only Alex accompanying me."

Nathan had no choice but to relent.

After everyone had left, Steven and Amy said goodbye to Marianne and also left.

Being as sharp as ever, Steven took notice of a familiar fragrance of gardenia as soon as he stepped outside the door.

Was it her? Did she come here?

Looking further down the corridor, he caught a glimpse of Cecilia’s silhouette disappearing around the corner.

Why would she come here?

Today was the Lawrence family’s ancestral memorial day; anyone with a mind to investigate could find out that it was Steven’s annual day of inspection over the family.

‘Did she... come because she was concerned about me?’

Cecilia did come out of concern, but it was for Alex, not Steven.

Initially planning to reveal her identity to protect her son, she realized upon arrival that the Lawrence family was not simple. If she exposed her identity, it might embolden those with ulterior motives to use it against Alex.

She left after realizing Alex was fine.

At the Mitchell family residence.

Mary was discussing solutions for the factory workers’ occupational diseases with Elena and James. She had brought along a medical expert who was doing a check-up on Elena, diagnosing the cause and providing a treatment plan.

If they could cure Elena’s long-standing illness, the workers would naturally have no worries.

After examining her for half a day, the expert found nothing wrong with Elena.

"Mrs. Mitchell, your lungs are perfectly fine."

Elena and James exchanged puzzled glances.

How could that be?

Mary also furrowed her brows.

"Did you check properly? My uncle and aunt have been suffering from a lung disease for a long time..."

James thought for a moment and spoke to the expert.

"Check me."

After examining James, the expert shook his head as well.

"Nothing wrong."

Elena and James were pleasantly surprised. Realizing something, they quickly fetched the leftover medicine that Cecilia had brought and handed it to the expert.

"Please take a look at this medicine. What do you think?"
