Chapter 53: Ancestral memorial ceremony

On the couch, Elena and James were frowning with worried faces.

A small figure suddenly approached them, and they immediately noticed it was Alex, with Cecilia following closely behind him.

Their irritation vanished instantly.

“Cecilia, Emma, what brings you here? You’re just in time for dinner.”

Alex greeted them politely.

“Great-aunt, Great-uncle, Grandma Mary, it’s nice to see you.”

Before he could finish, Mary reacted as if her tail had been stepped on, her voice sharp and piercing.

“Who are you calling Grandma? Who’s your Grandma? What are you doing here?”

Her barrage of questions scared Alex a bit, making Cecilia stand protectively in front of him as she placed the medicine in her hand on the coffee table in front of Elena.

“Great-aunt, this is lung-soothing medicine that works great when dissolved in water. Feel free to try it.”

Elena was somewhat surprised, not expecting Cecilia to remember her minor ailment so clearly.

She stood up and said, “You’re so thoughtful, Cecilia. How about staying for dinner...”

She wanted Cecilia to stay for dinner, but Cecilia subtly declined her invitation.

“Unfortunately, I already have plans in the evening, so I’ll have to decline.”

Afterward, she turned and left with Alex in her arms.

Seeing Mary made her lose her appetite.

Mary rolled her eyes so hard that they almost went to the ceiling, scoffing at the medicine Cecilia had brought.

“Does she even know anything about medicine? You two should be careful; it might be poisoned!”

Elena’s face turned stern. “Enough!”

James added, “You should head back and deal with the workers’ issues. Listen to their demands patiently first.”

Mary nodded, ready to leave in her high heels. Before she left, she cast a sideward glance at the bag of medicine.

“Anyway, I’ve said what I said. Whether you listen or not is up to you.”

With that, she strode out.

Elena sighed, coughing nonstop.

“The primary occupational disease at the factory is a lung disease. Since we’ve been plagued by it since the early days, we have these lasting problems now. Even after all these years, we still haven’t found a good solution to this issue, cough cough...”

James patted Elena’s back while speaking.

“Yes. We have always mentioned the risks of occupational diseases in our job advertisements, and we are working hard to find a solution to it. We have always covered the medical costs for workers who showed any symptoms, and things have been peaceful for years. Why are things being maliciously distorted now and making it to the news?

“Fortunately, the public opinion was suppressed initially. Now it would be best if we could find a remedy for this illness... cough, cough...”

James looked at the medicine Cecilia had brought and took it to the kitchen.

“The coughing is getting worse. This might work, so let’s give it a try.”

Meanwhile, Cecilia was driving back to the hotel, feeling worried.

Elena’s condition seemed to have worsened, so she would probably need to take that medicine a few times.

Adrian had given her mom this medicine’s prescription, which she then passed it to her. Back when she was studying music, her poor condition led to lung issues and an unclear voice. Thus, the medicine was passed down as it was quite effective for lung conditioning.

She glanced over to see Alex frowning, looking at messages on his watch.

“What’s wrong, Alex?”

Alex looked up, his tone serious.

“Mommy, I have to leave you for a bit. Tomorrow is the Lawrence family’s ancestral memorial day, so I need to return. I’ve agreed with Emma that we’ll swap again in front of the dessert shop.”

Cecilia nodded, though she was feeling a bit uneasy inside. She wondered if Alex’s strong connection to the Lawrence family would make him reluctant to leave with her...

At the dessert shop’s entrance, the two children swapped places. Emma jumped into Cecilia’s car.

After ensuring Ethan had safely picked Alex up, Cecilia went back to the hotel.

Emma was unusually quiet today.

What was up with these two kids today?

“Emma? What’s wrong?”

Emma, with a worried look, spoke up.

“Mommy, I think the bad guys want to chase Brother away tomorrow! He told me not to say anything because he didn’t want you to worry.”

“But Mommy, I’m really worried about Brother, so what should we do? Is there any way we can help him?”

Hearing this, Cecilia’s expression hardened instantly.

“Alright.”

Since they have the guts to bully Alex, they had better watch out!

The next morning, the Lawrence family’s ancestral memorial assembly began.

Early that morning, both the main family and the branch families had gathered at Madam Marianne’s old residence.

Due to her health no longer being a concern, Marianne had been moved back to her old residence for better care.

However, she still hadn’t woken up. Thus, Amy took it upon herself to stay by her side, ensuring that no one with ill intentions could get close to her.

Once everyone was present, Nathan took on the role of the family head.

After all, besides Lady Marianne, he was the most senior in position of the family.

He looked at Steven and Alex.

“Steven, today is the ancestral memorial ceremony, and yet you bring a bastard child here—are you looking to revolt?”

Steven’s gaze turned icy.

“Alex is my son, not a bastard child.”

“A child without a mother is a bastard! Our Lawrence family cannot keep him. Since you brought him here today, don’t blame me for being ruthless. In front of our ancestors, this illegitimate child had tarnished our family’s reputation. Today, in the name of our ancestors, I shall expel him from the Lawrence family!”

As he said that, the others in the room nodded and agreed.

“That’s right! Everyone, listen to Nathan. Banish this bastard from the family!”

“Today’s the ancestral memorial. Uncle Nathan is the oldest here, so nobody should refuse his decision!”

Steven scanned the crowd, his tone icy as he spoke.

“Have you all forgotten that my grandmother is still alive?”

Saying this, he looked at Nathan.

“While she’s still here and alive, is it your place, Nathan, to speak up?!”

His words immediately silenced the people of the branch families below.

Nathan gave a look to Tony beside him, who loudly declared with his head held high.

“You dare mention Grandma? If you hadn’t insisted on hiring some foreigner, thanks to some wild woman, for Grandma’s surgery, would she be in this state now?”

Then, he stirred the people of the branch families into action.

“I received info from experts that had it not been for that surgery, Grandma would have been awake by now. But because of it, she will never wake up again. Steven is the murderer!”

As he finished, his words incited anger among the crowd, their faces flushing with rage as they itched to attack Steven.

What the crowd hadn’t noticed was that down the hallway, Amy was hurrying toward them with a face full of joy.
