Chapter 100: Gathering at eastern gate
The next day in the city, Apollo had just finished his morning training and was resting a bit while looking out at the bustling streets. He could hear the loud noises of people talking and laughing, as the city seemed to have almost returned to its regular state.
In the last few days, knowing that the beasts weren’t going to attack, the city gradually returned to its usual state. Although a large number of people couldn’t go towards the Thousand Mountain Forest, most things seemed to return to normal.
The security remained tight, with many soldiers patrolling, but the lack of movements from the beast generals made them believe in their assurances.
He didn’t do anything special during these days; he just trained regularly to improve himself and stay in his best condition in case the beasts attacked. As for the white cat, the so-called "pussy king," they didn’t talk much, but it regularly followed him during his training. Even now, as he was strolling, it was trailing behind him.
"Tell me truly, what do you want to do by following me around?" Apollo couldn’t help but ask, looking at the cute white cat beside him.
But the "pussy king" didn’t answer and continued to walk beside him. Some people around him noticed his behaviour of talking with animals and distanced themselves from him, thinking he was a madman with a few screws loose in his brain.
He noticed this, but what could he do? He was really talking to a cat. Just as he was happily strolling through the city, things suddenly changed.
Soldiers started to run and take their positions in panic, and many experts began to gather. A loud announcement was made, a voice that could be heard in every corner of the city, loud and clear.
"Attention! The city is going to be attacked. A medium-sized beast tide is approaching. I repeat a beast tide is coming! Ordinary people, children, and the elderly, quickly hide within your houses and do not come out until the next announcement."
"All warriors who can fight, quickly report to the nearest battle station."
The loud announcement, with its powerful and commanding voice, shocked and made all the people within the city anxious, as they had just started to feel things returning to normal.
"Come quickly, come inside!"
"Son, come back!"
One after another, the streets that were once full of people became deserted, and a gloomy and anxious atmosphere enveloped the entire city.
Apollo looked at the white cat, who also seemed a bit surprised by the words he heard.
"What is happening? Why are the beasts attacking the city? Didn’t you say they would leave after not finding you in a few days?"
"How the hell should I know? This shouldn’t be happening. They should have guessed I left on my own. They wouldn’t attack for no reason, and certainly not for me," the pussy king said, with a confused expression on his face.
"If it isn’t for you, then why are they suddenly leading a beast tide?" Apollo looked at the "pussy king" and felt it was telling the truth. He could only sigh, realizing that numerous people were likely going to die.
But instead of immediately going to the battle station, Apollo went back to talk with his master and Old Man, Aragon.
When he arrived, both of them were already waiting for him.
"Okay, you’re here. We were just waiting for you. Let’s not waste time and head to the eastern gate gathering."
The white cat followed them, which surprised them, but they didn’t say anything. The cat seemed to have its own secrets and was glued to Apollo, following him everywhere he went.
"Kid, I’m not going to say much. You already have experience in many dangerous situations, so this is nothing new. But since it will be a battlefield, remember to be careful not only of the beasts but also of other humans."
"Among the numerous warriors, a few snakes will be present, trying to take advantage of such a deadly situation. Not to mention, many low-life hunters, gang members, and even some criminals will be there too."
"After all, it’s an army composed of everyone at the last minute to tackle the beast tide, so be careful every moment."
Apollo nodded, recalling the gangs he had dealt with. They would also be there, so he naturally had to be cautious. But he had a strange feeling that this beast tide had some connection with the four gangs.
However, how could four small gangs influence countless beasts and ferocious beast generals? He also remembered they were gathering corpses, and a beast tide would be an excellent place for gathering corpses. Could it really be their doing or, rather, the person behind them?
The more he thought about it, the more plausible it seemed. But to create such chaos and make the beast generals attack and launch a beast tide wasn’t something an ordinary person could do. How strong would the person have to be to pull this off? His expression grew grave just thinking about it.
But he quickly calmed his emotions. Right now, it was just a guess without any concrete evidence, and he could be wrong. He needed to focus on the beast tide and how to face it; everything else was secondary. Even if his thoughts were true, he couldn’t take on the person or group behind the four gangs alone.
They quickly arrived at the east gate battle station, where thousands of warriors had already gathered.
Hunter City had four major stations in different directions to protect the city from all sides.
Most of the warriors were weak and below the level of limit-breakers; only a small percentage were limit-breakers. This was the same scenario in all human kingdoms and cities. However, because of the large human population, there was still an advantage in the number of warriors who broke their limits compared to most races on Rion.
Maybe one in ten thousand warriors broke their limits to become extraordinary limit-breakers, but the human population was so vast that even small cities could have populations close to a million, not to mention medium- or large-scale cities.
It was also because of this that humans survived the old divine era without being eradicated, thanks to their ability to reproduce quickly compared to most other races.
As they waited for the commander to arrive, Apollo saw someone he knew—it was none other than Reid and his grandfather. Surprisingly, they had also come here to join the battle.
Reid noticed Apollo and quickly approached them. Master Aaron felt a bit melancholic as he saw the elderly figure beside Reid.
"Sir Aaron, it’s nice to see you again." Reid’s grandfather smiled warmly at Master Aaron, noting how strong Aaron still looked compared to himself, who felt he was nearing the end of his life.
"Yes, it’s good to see you." Master Aaron smiled back, feeling a bit melancholic about how quickly time had passed. He still remembered vividly the days of his youth when he first met Reid’s grandfather while out hunting beasts.
Master Aaron didn’t say anything about Reid’s grandfather participating in the battle, but he could guess that he wanted to use this dangerous battle as an opportunity to attempt one last time to break his limits and become a limit-breaker.
A moment later, Master Aaron and the Old Man Aragon left Apollo, seemingly called to discuss major strategic formations and tactics due to their strength and knowledge, which ranked among the top in the city.
Five minutes later, multiple powerful auras descended on the place, and many strong individuals appeared seemingly the strongest present. Among them were Master Aaron and Old Man Aragon.
Standing ahead of them was an old man whose eyes were blindfolded and who was enveloped in a mysterious aura. Many people wondered why a seemingly weak, blindfolded man was standing there. However, Apollo felt an unfathomable aura from him, completely different from any warrior he had encountered so far.
It piqued his curiosity, and he tried to extend his spirit sense closer to the blindfolded Old Man. The moment his spirit sense approached, he felt a mighty pressure descend upon him, and his spirit sense was instantly crushed.
The blindfolded Old Man seemed to notice, turning his head slightly in Apollo’s direction. Apollo instantly felt as if the old man was peering into his very soul, laying all his secrets bare.
He started to sweat, feeling an unprecedented sense of dread. Despite having encountered many fourth-rank grand master limit-breakers, this blindfolded old man exuded a far more profound and dangerous aura. It was as if he was facing a being far beyond his comprehension.
"Could he be a sage?" Apollo wondered, his mind racing. But at that moment, the blindfolded old man stopped looking in Apollo’s direction, and the tremendous pressure on him vanished as if nothing had happened.
Apollo took a deep breath, trying to calm his racing heart, and realized just how much more he had to learn and grow.
