Chapter 55: On the verge of death
Chapter 55: On the verge of death
Elliot knew it. Death was behind him, knocking on his door, and it wasn’t going to wait for him to open it. It would break it down to get him.
He had already used up almost all his tricks. His book, the summons, the trees... There were no trees left nearby.
In front of them stood only a huge mountain, imposing and powerful, mocking them. The rocks and overgrown brush told them that they would soon die, but that even the dry leaves on the nearby trees would see tomorrow, while they would not. Everything seemed to conspire to tell them of their imminent death.
But Elliot wasn’t going to give up.
Not so easily.
He had come this far, longing for this moment. Perhaps other people, any awakened ones, could easily give up in the face of such adversity, because how could they possibly defeat a Rank A beast when they had almost died fighting Rank D beasts?
It was obvious that the difference was enormous, and he knew it, but the greatest desire his heart had ever known was finally coming true. "I can’t die!" he roared.
He still had something left.
Even if it was just one more second of life, it could mean the difference between survival and death, and his mind wasn’t going to falter just because his legs were too scared to move.
He immediately threw his sword behind him to use it as a shield. He didn’t calculate anything, just the pure desire to live one more second.
At the same time, he threw the almost broken knife he had been carrying, several potions, and even some sheets he had bought earlier to ward off the cold. A large number of items from his inventory seemed to float in the air, useless, but carrying the intense desire to survive of a man longing for destiny.
The Pure Desire of a Man... To Survive. To be Powerful.
Jenna, who was running and being pulled by him, was in shock. She... Maybe she had already given up.
Despite having money, it’s not like she could get any of those incredibly powerful items from the young masters of the guilds or important families. Those items can cost so much that even if her whole family sold everything they had, they couldn’t afford them.
All she had was a set of internal armor in the system that gave her vitality and little else. Still, it wasn’t of a very high level, barely Rank C, because she firmly believed that the sword was the most important attribute of a swordsman, so she wanted to invest all her fortune in a good sword.
With everything she had, things that would evaporate before the power of such a powerful beast, what else could she do but surrender to death?
If there was one thing she could salvage, it was that at least it would be food, not violated by bastards.
That’s why seeing Elliot try until the very end, even with things as small as potions and household items, surprised her.
It made her see how much he wanted to live, how much he had wanted to be here, being an awakened being.
It made her see how much he would do to survive!
Unfortunately, they didn’t have time anymore.
All the things Elliot had thrown to defend himself seemed to stick slightly to that powerful claw, but it still managed to destroy them easily, until he came across a small knife... This, too, was destroyed instantly.
Finally, a sword and potions. The impact of the claw caused the sword to shatter into pieces, sending the remains flying everywhere, with the hilt flying toward Elliot’s head.
Just as it struck his head with terrifying force, the inner helmet he wore activated, causing much of the impact to be dispersed behind him. Then, the three of them suddenly felt the earth shake and crumble.
Elliot’s sword and helmet were destroyed in an instant, but the claw approaching him missed him by a hair’s breadth because the ground beneath them was destroyed.
Suddenly, a giant, slightly strange hole appeared behind and in front of them. Elliot and Jenna fell backwards into it, while the Griffin fell forward.
The Griffin could fly, so when he saw such a large hole, he finally spread his wings, forcing himself to move away from the two humans.
Elliot looked at this favorably and smiled. His mind was reeling from the previous impact that had shattered his helmet, but he kept his wits about him, against all odds.
"I survived... that."
Against all odds, he had been saved from being torn in half by the claws of a Rank A griffin, but now...
Just then, he felt a tug on his hand, but before he could understand what was happening, he fell, rolling across a strange, cold floor. Jenna seemed to cushion the impact of both of them, falling and embracing him with her dark magic.
The spinning made his mind hurt even more, but with determination, he managed to look ahead.
Then something amazing came into view.
.
Meanwhile, high above. The griffin watched this with a frown.
"Ruins beneath the Special Mountain... Could these be the rumored Ruins that are said to have given birth to this place? Hmm..." He sank into his thoughts for a few seconds.
According to the legend about this place among the intelligent races, Tall-Ar, Tall-Or, and Tall-Ur were not forests at first, just small mountain ranges in an area with little vegetation, as they belonged to the coastal areas.
But one day, a ruin appeared, presumably from a large dungeon, and from there came the three most extensive forests on the coasts of this small territory. No one had ever seen this supposed ruin before, so it was just speculation on the part of some people.
But what if it was real? How powerful would this ruin-dungeon be? Were the beasts still alive?
"Well, whatever." The griffin seemed to shrug and began to descend. "I need my food anyway. Those damn bastards aren’t going to get away."
Although he could no longer see them in the strange darkness that enveloped this place, he could see some strange patterns on the walls that told him this ruin would be interesting. And with his sense of smell and good eyesight, how could he not find them?
