Chapter 54: Against a Rank A Beast

Chapter 54: Against a Rank A Beast

The griffin stopped savoring his food when he heard the flapping of the eagle in the distance and looked up.

"Heh, so this was your plan, bastard." He growled, annoyed. But he shook his head. "Well, never mind. Human flesh tastes better for breakfast, and because of that bastard, I’ll be late for breakfast today..." He then lowered his head once more and looked at his breakfast.

"Although I should say it was worth the wait."

He immediately took a soft leap forward, which brought him to where his breakfast was waiting. One of his claws moved extremely fast, trying to serve himself his meal.

But his claws didn’t grab anything; they seemed to break the air before him.

"Oh? Did they dodge?" He looked at his prey rolling on the ground and planned to jump toward them again, but then he saw two things made of fire flying toward him.

"Magic? Are they wizards with swords?" One of his claws rose to deflect the magic, but then he realized that wasn’t the case.

He struck two pieces of a book that were still burning, but no longer functioning. His claws striking such a weak item destroyed it almost completely, finally extinguishing the flame burning within.

His eagle head tensed. "These bastards..."

He had been tricked. He wondered how these guys could have dodged his first attack, being so weak, but they even dared to trick him.

At he, a Blood Royal Griffin!

-

A moment ago.

Elliot somehow managed to see a strange green energy barely moving, milliseconds before the griffin made its first move.

Thanks to that, Elliot pulled Jenna abruptly to one side and managed to avoid a blow that would surely have killed them both. They both fell to the ground, rolling quickly.

As he did so, Elliot took the opportunity to try to blind the griffin. Remembering that he had once read that griffins did not like fire in a forest, he decided to throw the book that had been split in half during the attack that had almost killed him earlier.

For some reason, the fire had not been extinguished despite being unusable, which showed how impressive a Soul Mage could be.

As he threw it, they both immediately began to run toward the mountain, the only viable place they could escape to now, despite the danger it presented.

As they did so, they destroyed many trees so that they would fall toward the griffin and buy themselves some time, unfortunately...

Those were children’s games.

They hadn’t even managed to run 200 meters when the griffin appeared beside them, fury written all over his face.

Elliot looked at him from so close that he thought he would die of fright, but in a burst of courage and with a determination to live, he swung his sword with all his might, aiming to strike him in the eye with a well-aimed blow, while continuing to move his legs to escape.

The griffin hadn’t expected this little guy to attack him as soon as he arrived. He hadn’t even said what he wanted to say, and already had a sword in his beak.

Elliot groaned when he saw that, due to his fear, he hadn’t been able to land the blow where he should have. ’Shit!’

Missing was worse than hitting him in the eye, because this was an act of pure provocation toward such a powerful beast.

"Damn human, die!" A scream echoed in Elliot’s eardrums, instantly shattering them.

At the same time, one of the griffin’s powerful claws lunged at him, but at that moment, something got in its way again.

It was a strange rat formed of energy that seemed to hit him with all its might, a minimal force that normally would have done nothing, but together with the force of a strange black sword, it moved his claw a few millimeters. The rat was torn to pieces before his claw, but it was still enough to stop him for a few milliseconds.

In any other situation, a few milliseconds would not have helped anyone human, as they do not have such quick reaction times. But for Elliot, whose main mission in his brain right now was to survive, this time was enough.

He threw himself to the ground just before the claw could tear him apart, and it only managed to shred his clothes. But he didn’t care. Thanks to the slight increase in agility he gained when his rat died and the momentum he gained when the beast tore his clothes, he could split several trees in half and throw them at the griffin to buy some time.

Meanwhile, Jenna filled her arm with her slowing power and passed it on to the Griffin, grazing one of its long wing feathers.

With this, the Griffin finally found something that slowed him down slightly. With the trees thrown by Elliot, plus a huge Goblin that suddenly appeared, grabbing his hind legs, the Griffin found himself, for a moment, in a situation that stopped him completely.

Elliot and Jenna didn’t stay long enough to think about whether they had succeeded or how long it would be before it moved again. They both ran as fast as they could, knowing that their lives depended on it.

During this time, their minds didn’t think, as if they feared their thoughts would slow them down. They were both acting almost purely on instinct, with the pure desire to survive.

A second of running began to feel like an eternity, but since they were running so fast, they were already just steps away from the mountain... Something that meant nothing.

What would happen if they got there? Would the griffin stop chasing them? No, none of that would happen. It didn’t matter if they got there or not; they were destined to die.

But perhaps they longed to get there to fulfill the desire they had had since they first got involved in this... Perhaps it was their last wish.

As they ran desperately, Elliot suddenly felt his stats increase...

His summon had died. He wouldn’t have it for the next hour.

At the same time, Jenna spat blood... She had been knocked back because her ability had been broken before its effect had ended, forcing Elliot to pull her by the arm, but then the terrifying cry of the griffin behind them showed that his anger had reached his limit.

He leaped behind them and reached the bodies of his adversaries with a single movement, the fury inside him almost making him forget that he wanted them for food.

He couldn’t help it. Two little humans had mocked him and made him act like a miserable creature!

Now, the pure instinct to tear them apart fell on the eagle claw that was just a few meters from the bodies of these bastards.
