Chapter 42: No time to lose
When the explosion passed, those present surrounded the area.
"They escaped."
"Impossible. That guy was infected with yellow snake venom. How could he run so fast out of the blast radius?"
"I cast the spell... They escaped. My magic didn’t hit them."
"Damn, those bastards are like rats."
Among the people investigating the area, several agreed with what the wizard said.
But they were curious about something. "What caused the explosion?" They looked at the wizard, causing him to shake his head.
"I don’t know. Something got in the way of the magic. You must know that when something like this happens, the magic thinks it has reached its target and explodes."
"I see." One of them nodded and looked at him. "It’s possible that it found one of the targets. Maybe that woman threw Elliot into the explosion because she realized she couldn’t escape with him."
Faced with this possibility, the wizard turned his head to one side. He wanted to say something, but he knew that all he could say would be things that would not help in the current situation.
In the end, he sighed. "It’s likely."
’He’s not saying everything... Then that probability is very low,’ thought the one who had questioned him, and sighed.
"Go after him and find him."
"Huh?"
"What?" He looked at his subordinates and frowned. "Can’t you hear me?"
"S-Sir... You want us to go into a Rank D dungeon with Rank C dungeons all around it? From here on out, the Orcs team up with the Orc Warriors. It’s impossible for us to clear it and search for those guys!"
His response was logical. Even the Masters wouldn’t venture carelessly into these open-world dungeons. A Rank D dungeon could still be cleared, but a Rank C one?
It was on a different level. Maybe if they formed a group of Masters, they could clean it up and search for fugitives, but if they were alone or just two, it would be suicide.
After all, Orc Warriors would be the least of their worries when there were all kinds of Rank C beasts lurking around.
The leader knew it too, but there was nothing else they could do.
"Running into that guy again and telling him we failed the mission is even worse. So move it. Every minute that passes is another minute those bastards can escape. If you don’t want to die, do as I say."
The leader turned around and started walking in the opposite direction with a few of his subordinates.
"I’ll ask the Master to give us more time. We’ll meet up later."
With nothing else to do, the stunned subordinates, without many options, were forced to pursue the troublesome pair while the leader returned to meet with his employers.
...
That night, somewhere in Loen City.
A young, burly man sat drinking a glass of wine in the darkness of a room.
The room seemed sealed shut, so nothing, not even moonlight, could enter. His face could not be seen, but he could see in the darkness without any problem.
"You say they got away?" he said, after a sip of wine.
On the other side of the room, a man kneeled and nodded.
"It’s likely. We had a fierce fight because of a dangerous woman who was with him, who managed to throw the whole plan off balance. In the end, that guy seemed to become strong suddenly, so he maneuvered very well during the battle, but our Agility Mage managed to hit him with the dagger before they escaped, so he should be poisoned."
"What happened to the Agility Mage?"
"He bled to death."
Although he couldn’t see anything, the kneeling man could feel that the atmosphere in the room had suddenly dropped.
"We lost several tanks, a few fighters, and an Agility Mage with Stealth magic... You’re all a waste." He sneered.
"I’m sorry."
The young man stood up, smiling coldly, and patted the one kneeling before him on the shoulder.
"If you don’t bring me that guy’s head, you’ll have to pay me for that Stealth Mage. You should know how expensive it is to train a Stealth Mage. So, have fun looking for him." His cold words made the man tremble, but the young man had already disappeared when he planned to respond.
His chaotic thoughts couldn’t calm down all night, so he had to go out and search for his target again.
Whatever the cost, they had to find him, so they mobilized more people this time.
...
Deep within a Rank D Orc Dungeon, a cave seemed faintly lit by a torch.
No, it was more like a bonfire surrounded by two people on the ground.
Elliot was lying on the floor, his eyes closed, a wound on his arm that seemed to have a strange dark magic, and he was also covered with a woman’s clothes.
Jenna was sitting across from him, barely covered with some clothing on her upper body, staring at the fire before her with no expression on her face.
She seemed to be thinking deeply.
Without her noticing, Elliot opened his eyes a while ago and stared at her.
’What a strange and mysterious woman,’ he thought, before sitting on the floor.
When Jenna noticed the movement, she turned her head toward him, and when she saw him sitting down, she smiled.
"You seem okay."
"I feel much better. Thanks to you." He said and handed her the women’s clothes that she had wrapped him in.
"It was thanks to you that we got out of there, so it was the least I could do."
Elliot shook his head. "A Dark Magic swordswoman, huh. I’ve never seen one before. I never imagined Dark Magic had properties against poison."
Jenna smiled. "You’ve never seen one before, and you never will. I’m not what you think I am."
Elliot stared at her for a long time. Perhaps he wanted to discover her secrets or simply understand her words.
But she had saved him. He couldn’t ask her meaningless questions right now.
"Where are we?" he asked.
Jenna finally sighed. "I went into the dungeon after you fell unconscious. I couldn’t find my way back to the city."
Her soft voice sounded strange, causing Elliot to look at her hands. Although a fire was lighting up the cave a little, she had her hands under her legs in a dark place.
He hadn’t expected Elliot to be able to see perfectly in the dark, and he noticed not only the wounds but also that he was shaking slightly.
’Going into a Rank D Orc dungeon isn’t the best idea, but it was the right decision,’ he thought, looking outside.
Something strange caught his eye when he thought about going for a walk.
’The Thread of Vengeance?’ he thought.
His mind reeled at that moment, and he stood up abruptly. The wounds on his body protested, but he didn’t care and quickly grabbed Jenna by the hand.
"We have to go, they’re chasing us!" he exclaimed with a soft shout.
Jenna was stunned. "Really? All the way here?"
But there wasn’t much time for talking. If Elliot could see that Thread with the naked eye, the enemy was close.
They had no time to waste!
