Chapter 43: A large group in front of him
After putting out the fire, they both ran out of the cave and went deeper into the dungeon.
"I heard something, boss!"
"It’s this way, it must be them!"
"Boss, there’s smoke from a fire in this little cave. They were here recently!"
"Go after those bastards!"
The different shouts of their pursuers reached Elliot and Jenna’s ears, but they didn’t stop to look back. They ran quickly toward the depths of the dungeon.
-
A day passed.
The following night, Elliot and Jenna were exhausted from running. They had been fleeing from Orc Wizards and other troublesome people, but today Elliot had made a decision.
"We must kill as many as we can to reduce their numbers."
"Are you feeling better?"
"I can fight. Don’t worry, now that we’re here, I don’t think it’s a good idea to hide my abilities."
Jenna then smiled. "If that’s the case, let’s do it. They’re searching for us in this area, splitting up. If we manage to catch the scattered groups, we can reduce their numbers and finish them off." Despite her words and her determination, she was actually afraid.
Elliot could tell by the trembling of her hands, which were hidden by the strange black sword she carried.
During this last day, Elliot learned that she was not, in fact, a magical swordswoman, even though she seemed to fulfill the conditions. She created her own sword with magic, but her sword did not seem to have magic. Rather, "it was magic."
The dark magic she carried came from her ability, or whatever it was she had.
As far as he knows, magical swordsmen can use magic through their swords. Basically, they enchant the sword with their magic, and that way, the sword has magical attributes. There are skills that simplify this, but in this case, her sword cannot be enchanted because it is dark magic in itself.
Another thing he learned is that she is amazingly good with a sword!
To call her good is to insult her. She is an amazing master swordswoman!
Her skill with a sword is at the pinnacle of what Elliot has ever seen. Not to mention John, not even Tyler Clark is as good with a sword as she is, so Elliot has been learning a little by watching her fight, and at night, when everything is quiet, he tries to reproduce her movements.
That’s why they felt completely confident about what they would do next.
They jumped from tree to tree, searching for one of the groups chasing them.
It didn’t take them long to find it.
"It’ll be a bit risky, because they’re relatively closer today. But we have to be quick. If we eliminate these without alerting the rest, we could break those guys’ line of attack and escape to the city."
"How are we going to attack?"
"I’ll go first. I didn’t tell you before, but I’m a summoner. I have a tank and an assassin specialized for this type of attack, so my summons and I will open a window for you to pass through, since you’re stronger than me. Let’s try to kill them all in one blow, with attacks to the neck."
Jenna nodded. ’So that’s what I saw before—summons. What an interesting form,’ she thought, but she agreed.
Finally, Elliot jumped to another tree in a blind spot for his targets and waited patiently for his chance...
"Those bastards are pretty slippery."
"We feel like we’re closing in on them, but they still manage to get away. What kind of skills do they have?"
"Damn rats..."
"Well, don’t worry so much." The leader of this group of five smiled when he saw how desperate they were. "Reinforcements will arrive soon. We can move freely now that Broken Leaf and his tests aren’t interfering. We’ll block this dungeon before..."
He hadn’t even finished speaking when the leader felt something missing from his body. And when he tried to see it, three shadows moved between his eyes as they fell into darkness.
He wanted to scream to alert his companions, but couldn’t do anything. His head was separated from his body, and the three shadows managed to knock down his companions.
Before his eyes closed and with the last vestiges of his life, he could see a fourth shadow materialize and decapitate two of his subordinates.
Five heads fell to the ground in a matter of seconds.
But so did a strange device that Jenna grabbed.
"What is it?" Elliot asked after approaching.
Jenna frowned.
"I didn’t expect them to have something like this here. We’ll have to run away and forget about getting rid of those guys."
"Run away to the city? Not yet..."
"No, we’re going deeper into the dungeon."
Elliot stared at her and frowned.
"Is it an alarm device?"
"Yes. Did you hear what they were saying?"
"Reinforcements are coming."
"That’s right. And those reinforcements have been alerted right now, so they will regroup as a large group and surround us."
Elliot nodded and looked thoughtful. "Now that you mention it, these guys’ movements have been a little strange up until now. They were moving toward the edges of the dungeon, but always avoiding the Orcs. Were they trying to surround the entire dungeon to prevent us from escaping?"
"Possibly."
"Sigh. We have no choice but to go in."
Elliot looked up to gaze into the depths of this enormous forest, with mountains on either side.
Venturing into an open-world dungeon this large is never the best decision. The mountains on either side serve as hiding places for powerful beasts, and although no Rank B or higher beasts have ever been sighted in this area, they may exist.
There are no limits to how strong a beast can grow; like humans, they can become powerful. Furthermore, some beasts, especially those of Rank B and above, choose to abandon their dungeons or nests and travel through the mountains to settle elsewhere.
It is very common to find Rank A beasts in lakes, which is why these places are now considered forbidden territory where you enter at your own risk.
While they were weighing the pros and cons of doing so, a sudden cry reached them.
"Sir, I’ve got them!" he shouted behind Elliot.
He turned quickly toward him and, seeing that a man had spotted them, gripped his sword tightly and lunged toward him, reaching him in a matter of seconds.
"Damn bastard, you’re going to die!" The man drew his own sword and attacked, causing a clash of swords, in which Elliot had the upper hand.
’That strong?’ Elliot was thrown back slightly, but his enemy could not continue his attack.
"You’re stronger than the mission said!" He roared and stomped his feet, trying to lunge at Elliot.
But that was when he realized he had lost sight of the woman, the most dangerous one.
That made him stop and turn his body when he felt danger running down his back. It was at the last moment, but he dodged Jenna’s attack.
"Oh, that’s really impressive." Jenna smiled.
"You stupid woman, I’ll kill you!" He roared, but then a strange, large shadow covered him, causing him to look up.
’A high goblin?’ he thought.
That goblin was holding Elliot’s sword and swung it hard at him.
"BUAGHH!"
His scream echoed through the forest as one of his arms was severed from his body. The pain he felt was terrifying, but a clean strike to his neck soon drowned it out, and his head rolled across the ground.
Elliot arrived alongside Jenna, but stopped immediately when he saw that there was a crowd of people approaching in front of him.
Many stopped in the trees, others on the ground. But there were more than 100 of them.
"..."
Elliot’s expressionless face was enough to tell Jenna that they were in danger, so she smiled.
"We have no choice but to go in, right?" she asked, without turning around.
Elliot nodded softly.
"Yes."
