Chapter 128: That Look In His Eyes

Micah’s fingers were wrapped around Darcy’s wrist as they walked through the gate. His mind was so full of thoughts, he hadn’t even realised he was still holding on. The sky was dark, and the streetlights lit up the surroundings, enough that he completely missed the luxury car pulling up nearby. His mouth was moving a mile a minute.

"Where are we going first tomorrow? The hospital? Or to Nora’s school? What do I even wear?" Micah asked, eyes wide as he looked down at his outfit. "I don’t want to look like some rich brat in front of your mother. What if she doesn’t like me? What if she tells you not to hang out with me?"

Micah scratched his cheek nervously. Honestly, the possibility felt high.

The worry was evident in his voice now. "She’s gonna take one look at me and think, ’Why is my smart well-behaved son hanging out with that troublemaker?’ Right? I mean, I don’t exactly scream good influence."

Darcy, however, didn’t answer right away. He stared at Micah’s hand on his wrist. A small crease formed between his brows. But not from irritation. More like confusion.

Why did Micah keep grabbing his hand? He had lost count of how many times that had happened. And the strange part was that he didn’t find it unpleasant.

Micah glanced up at him. "Hey... are you even listening?"

"I’m just trying to figure something out," Darcy said with a serious tone.

Micah tilted his head. "Figure what out?"

"Why do you care so much about what my mum thinks," Darcy replied, glancing sideways at him. "It’s like... you want to impress her."

Like a son-in-law or something... Darcy did not say the last sentence aloud.

Micah’s mouth opened, then closed. His ears turned a little red. He looked away quickly.

"W-What? No, I just..." he trailed off, unable to think of any excuse that could explain his actions and words. For God’s sake, Flora was his biological mother. Of course, he wanted to impress her. But he couldn’t say anything to Darcy.

Darcy watched Micah closely, noting how quickly he became embarrassed. He wanted to tease him more, but he changed his mind. Micah was like a feral cat. Push him too far and he would bare his teeth.

"Why would she not like you? You are her daughter’s saviour. Have you forgotten?" Darcy said at last.

Micah rubbed the back of his neck, his eyes flicking to the sidewalk. "Yeah... there’s that... but doesn’t that make it worse? I probably looked like a maniac. Who throws themselves in danger like that? What if she thinks I am reckless and dumb?"

Darcy chuckled softly. Micah’s weird brain circuit was really unique. "Who would think that? You are thinking too much."

Micah stared for a second, then nodded slowly. "Yeah, you are right." then after a pause he began again.

"What do they like? Nora’s a teenager, right? She probably likes cute stuff. Or maybe something related to her Idol, Mani? No, wait does she like jewellery? My uncle owns a jewellery store! We could go there and find something she would like!"

Micah turned his head and looked at Darcy. "What about your Mum? Jewellery? Flowers? Does she like sweet stuff or more the healthy kind? Wait, what’s her hobby?"

Micah waited for Darcy to answer, but there was no reaction. He was just watching him. There was something soft in his eyes now. A quiet warmth. He didn’t even realise he was staring until Micah suddenly froze and snapped his head forward.

Micah’s heart skipped. That look... what was that? Like affection...Micah shook his head, feeling baffled by his own thought.

This was the scene Jacklin and Dean had encountered at the gate.

After Emile and his roommates had gone inside, Jacklin and Dean had stayed back, watching silently.

Jacklin leaned against the side of a parked car. She crossed her arms, her eyes narrowing as the two boys climbed into the luxury car and disappeared down the path.

Next to her, Dean stood with his hands stuffed into his jacket pockets, chewing on a piece of gum.

Jacklin broke the silence first. "Do you also think there was something off?"

Dean rubbed his chin. "Yeah," he said after a moment. "I’m a guy. I’ve had close friends. Sure...But none of them ever looked at me like that just for holding their hand... Hell! I never even grabbed their hand like that!"

"Even you, a straight clueless guy, sensed that."

"I’m not blind!"

Jacklin sighed. "So, is he two-timing?"

"You mean with Asena and that black-haired guy?" Dean asked.

"Yeah... should we tell little uncle?" Jacklin looked back toward the gate. "They looked really close."

"Tell him what?" Dean shot down the idea. "We have no evidence. And you know how he has been lately. It is like walking on eggshells. I am scared to even say Micah’s family name in front of him. Let alone say some speculation about him."

"Right," Jacklin nodded. "The last time I brought it up Asena’s boyfriend, his eyes turned really scary."

Then she leaned back against the car and exhaled. "What if we just... talk to that dark-haired boy?"

"Talk about what?"

"Like ask him if he knows Micah is seeing a girl at the same time? Maybe that black-haired guy makes a fuss and drags Asena into their fight. This way, Asena finds out about two timing and breaks up with Micah!" Jacklin said, eyes narrowing with interest.

"That’s... a possibility..." Dean frowned. "But what if we mess it up? What if that guy leaves voluntarily? What if Micah ends up with just Asena, and we accidentally help their relationship get stronger?"

Jacklin groaned. "Ugh... I need to see Asena again and ask her face-to-face about Micah... but military training ruined everything. I can’t believe she is in a relationship. Emile and his roommates had no idea who we were asking about. How could they not know Asena?!"

Dean shrugged. "Well, maybe she is shy? Remember after the cosplay event? She vanished. Anyone in her place would have hugged the glory! She was such a sensation at that event. But she left quietly."

"Yeah, you are right. Now that I think about it, I even wondered if her hair colour was fake... like part of a disguise. Well, she said something about a stalker..." Jacklin mumbled.

"Umm... and now it’s like she doesn’t exist again."

They both fell into deep thought.

Looking for Asena’s real identity had become a mystery itself. The harder they searched, the less they found. And with their uncle acting strange whenever the name came up, they couldn’t dig too deep without risking trouble.
