Chapter 129: What Do You Mean Don’t Come?!
Micah slid into the back seat of the car beside Darcy, shutting the door with a soft thud. He barely sat still before turning toward the driver. "Let’s go to Uncle Graham’s store," he said quickly.
Darcy gave him a curious glance.
"The jewellery store I told you about, duh!" Micah said, pouting. "And people tell me I don’t listen when they talk!" he grumbled.
Darcy scratched his nose. "Sorry..."
Micah stayed quiet and stared out the window. He recalled the look in Darcy’s eyes and pressed his lips together. But he couldn’t shake that image from his mind. He fidgeted throughout the drive. Tapping his fingers on his thigh, checking his phone, adjusting the sleeves of his hoodie like they were suddenly uncomfortable. When the car finally pulled up in front of the jewellery store, he shot out like a bullet.
Darcy followed him in, eyes drifting over the gleaming glass counters filled with glittering items. The store was quiet and clean. It screamed top luxury. He felt uncomfortable. Micah buying something from here for his family felt excessive. Before he could suggest they leave, a woman in a neat black suit stepped forward, her heels clicking softly against the floor. She gave a polite smile when she saw Micah.
"Ah, young master, what brings you here today?"
Micah gave her a quick nod. "I’m here to pick something for a friend." He looked around. "Where is your VIP section for young girls?"
The woman’s smile grew curious. Had the arrogant young master finally found a lover? That would be juicy gossip. "If I may ask... is it for your girlfriend?"
Micah froze. His eyes snapped to her, and he gave her a sharp glare. "You talk too much," he said, voice flat. "I’ll find my uncle myself."
The woman stiffened, her smile vanishing in an instant. She realised she had overstepped her boundary. "I apologise, young master," she said quickly, bowing her head. "Boss is on the second floor."
Micah didn’t say anything else. He just turned and started heading up the stairs.
Another woman stepped beside the first one. "Not even a minute after arriving here, and he made you bow to him. Tsk... he is really a handful, just like people say..."
Darcy caught the remark and threw a glance at the two women before following Micah.
"What was that look for? Scary!"
"Even the people he hangs out with are strange."
The two women murmured behind Darcy’s back.
"Uncle Graham," Micah called the moment he reached the second floor.
A man in a dress shirt and glasses looked up from his desk. He was in the middle of sketching something on a small notepad but paused when he saw who it was. "Micah, what a surprise," he said and stood up from his seat.
Micah didn’t waste time. "I want something unique and delicate for a teenage girl."
Graham hummed thoughtfully, already moving to a tall cabinet nearby. "You’re in luck. I have something right up your alley. Here, look," he said, pulling out a fiat tray covered in black velvet. Resting on it were rows of fine gold chains, each with a small, dainty pendant. Some were animals, others were shaped like stars, hearts, and flowers. "These are perfect for young girls. Just came in last week."
Micah leaned over the tray, scanning the options. Then he glanced sideways at Darcy. "What do you think? What year was she born?" he asked, pointing to a tiny gold charm shaped like a rabbit. "These match the Zodiac, right?"
Darcy squinted at the row of animals. "She was born in the year of the dog."
Micah nodded, fingers brushing past the rabbit and dragon to stop at a cute little pendant shaped like a puppy. It had tiny ears that dropped down and a small gemstone for the nose.
Graham glanced at Darcy briefly but did not ask who he was. He had enough sense not to ask unnecessary questions, especially not when Micah was involved. That boy had a short fuse sometimes, and Graham liked keeping his days peaceful. Besides, whoever the quiet dark-haired boy was, Micah clearly trusted him enough to bring him here. Micah’s temper... well, that was a headache. He just wanted to send this big Buddha away quickly.
"Right! Cora is the same too." Graham muttered under his breath, becoming more puzzled about whom Micah was buying this for. Well, it appeared she was a relative of the black-haired boy.
Darcy tilted his head slightly. He guessed the man was probably Cora’s father.
Micah pointed at the dog charm. "I’ll take that one."
As Graham moved to wrap it up, Micah’s gaze shifted toward another counter across the room. The man’s section. There were some simple bracelets there, and a few necklaces and rings. His eyes lingered for a second too long in a slim silver band.
He wanted to get one for Darcy. Nothing fancy. Just a little birthday gift. But with Darcy standing right next to him, it felt too awkward. He didn’t want to make a big deal out of it. Then, an idea came to him.
"Uncle," he said suddenly, "if a customer gives you a custom shape, how long would it take to make?"
Graham scratched his chin. "Depends on the design. If it is simple, maybe a week or two."
Micah nodded. "Okay. I also want that jade ring from last month’s catalogue."
Graham raised a brow. "You mean the one with Imperial jade?"
Micah hummed in response.
Graham quickly packed the items swiftly into a velvet-lined box and handed them over.
"Thanks. Tell Aunt Mable I said hi." with that, Micah left the store.
Their next stop was a traditional medicine shop. Micah bought a bottle of nutrient supplements and placed it beside the jewellery.
Then he checked the time and sighed. "Ah, finally done. Let’s get going before the dorm closes."
The car pulled up at the school gate just in time. As Micah reached for the door, Driver Dan spoke up. "Right, young master, your mother asked me to remind you. She wants you home this Friday to choose your cake and tuxedo for the birthday party."
Micah froze mid-motion. His hand dropped from the door handle. Slowly, he turned his head toward the driver with a glare. "Got it," he muttered, then grabbed Darcy’s wrist and practically yanked him out of the car.
"Let’s go!" he snapped, walking quickly toward the dorm.
Darcy kept pace, a little confused but not surprised. Micah had these strange mood swings sometimes. He waited until they were through the gate before asking, "What was that about?"
Micah clutched the bag tighter in his hand. "I don’t want to celebrate my birthday like that."
"Why not? Isn’t it nice? Isn’t your family there? Don’t they love you?"
Micah gave a short laugh. But it wasn’t happy.
"No, it’s nothing like that. It’s just...those banquets are for show. A big event to say ’Look, we love our son.’ But I never once like that."
"Then why don’t you say something?"
"Of course I did!" Micah snapped, stopping in his tracks and turning to face him. "Do I look like the type who bottles things up? I said it plenty of times. It’s not about that. I know this is something necessary. Saving face or appearance...So... I want to ask you for a favour."
Darcy stared at him, waiting. He thought Micah wanted to invite him to his birthday. Even though he didn’t like this kind of setting, for Micah...
"Could you not come?" Micah said.
"Huh?" Darcy was flabbergasted.
"I mean," Micah stumbled over his words, clearly frustrated with himself. "I want to ditch the party after the speech. I want this year to be different. If you come, I’ll feel like I have to stay. I’ll feel guilty. I don’t want to stand around shaking hands and smiling at strangers."
Micah took a deep breath and continued.
"I mean could you hang out with me on that day? Somewhere far away from that boring party?" he uttered finally.
Darcy’s dark expression vanished. For a second he thought Micah didn’t want to be seen with him. Maybe he was ashamed to show him to others as his friend.
"Sure. I’ll clear that night for you." Darcy said. "Right, when is it?"
Micah felt his mouth go dry. He couldn’t utter the day. He swallowed and looked away. "Friday next week."
Darcy paused. Wasn’t his birthday too? His eyes widened a little. What a coincidence, he thought, as a small smile tugged at his lips.
