Former Interstellar Mercenary In Urban Cultivation World -
Chapter 963: The Spirit’s Gamble
Chapter 963: The Spirit’s Gamble
A spirit’s power at this level was equivalent to the Soul Formation stage of human cultivators. And if there were more stages beyond this—could there be spirits at the Deity Transformation or even Body Integration stages? Would he one day encounter a spirit at the Mahayana stage?
"Mahayana stage spirits, though, are too dangerous to provoke."
Aware of his limits, Kenny Lin dismissed the thought, though he overlooked that spirits beyond the Deity Transformation stage would all be beyond his reach.
After absorbing the purple orb, he observed the second-to-last crack in his Yin-Yang Pearl finally mending.
These spirits’ orbs were proving even more useful than he had expected.
"If I take down a few more purple-grade spirits, I might be able to repair the final crack—and I should save some for Amalia. But where can I find more spirits?"
His gaze flickered, instantly capturing a sneaky, shadowy figure.
The spirit, a dark, murky entity, was clutching a red orb that Kenny Lin had dropped earlier. Although terrified of him, it shivered every time he got near, yet couldn’t help but follow him.
The moment it sensed his gaze, the spirit trembled, dropping the red orb it clutched, darting behind a wall, only to peek out a second later to spy on him again.
The figure standing in the center of the hall vanished abruptly.
The spirit panicked. Where had he gone?
"What are you doing, following me around?" an eerie voice sounded from behind it.
The spirit fell flat on the ground with a thud, frozen in terror, unable to get up.
Kenny Lin nudged it with the tip of his shoe. "Pathetically weak—you’re not even worth the energy it’d take to kill you."
The spirit rolled twice on the ground from his nudge, trembling like a leaf caught in a storm.
Kenny Lin crouched, poking at it with the tip of his sword. "Here’s your chance—take me to other spirits, and I won’t kill you."
The spirit, half-convinced it was about to die, continued to shiver.
"Stop shaking," Kenny Lin’s voice, laced with menace, suddenly rang out.
The spirit instantly went still.
"If you understand, lead the way. If not, get lost." Kenny Lin straightened up, not even bothering to waste the energy needed to kill it. It didn’t have glowing red eyes, which meant it hadn’t consumed any other spirits; its aura was so weak it was nearly negligible and had no offensive capability at all.
He ignored the spirit, striding forward without even glancing at the red orb on the ground.
Having tasted the blue and purple orbs, he no longer had any interest in the small red one.
The spirit grabbed the red orb, absorbing its energy as it continued to follow him.
Kenny Lin knew it was tagging along but didn’t say anything. As they moved, he killed any spirits that tried to attack, occasionally encountering a few blue spirits, but there were still no signs of another purple one.
"When you’re done eating, get to work," he growled, giving the spirit an irritated look as it took a full quarter of an hour to finish absorbing the red orb’s energy.
Perhaps realizing this human wasn’t going to hurt it, the spirit seemed slightly braver, although it still trembled when close to him, it no longer collapsed in fright.
Cautiously, it drifted ahead to lead the way, only to be kicked aside.
"If you keep dawdling, I’ll kill you," his voice, full of killing intent, sounded behind it.
The spirit jumped up, moving as fast as it could to lead the way.
Yet, even at its top speed, it was slow in Kenny Lin’s eyes. He thought to himself that if it didn’t lead him to a purple spirit soon, it would be useless to keep it around.
A shiver of dread ran down the spirit’s back. Not daring to look behind, it focused on leading the way.
Just before Kenny Lin’s temper boiled over, the spirit finally proved useful, locating a purple-grade spirit. Sensing the powerful spirit ahead, he charged forward without hesitation.
The guiding spirit paused, noticing that besides the purple-grade spirit, there were also many blue-grade spirits ahead. Together, they could pose a threat to the purple spirit.
It rushed after him, only to halt abruptly as it rounded the wall obstructing its view. Peeking around the corner, it nervously observed the scene.
The powerful purple-grade spirit, sensing the sword energy vibrating through the air, commanded its followers to attack the intruder.
The human was soon engulfed by a swarm of blue-grade spirits, with only flashes of fierce sword energy breaking through the haze.
Every swing of his sword energy claimed at least one spirit, and soon, the floor was littered with blue orbs amid the growing piles of black ash.
The small spirit looked on enviously at the blue orbs. This human was so powerful. It, too, longed to absorb the blue orbs, but didn’t dare.
These orbs were irresistible to spirits, but due to its weakness, it had always been unable to fight off other spirits, narrowly avoiding being devoured by them on many occasions.
The first time it tasted the delight of an orb had been a gift from this human.
Since then, it couldn’t stop craving them.
The number of blue-grade spirits dwindled, with some realizing they weren’t a match for this human and starting to retreat.
Kenny Lin ignored the orbs on the ground, cutting his way through until he stood in front of the purple spirit.
The small spirit hesitated, then floated over to gather the orbs.
It didn’t dare to steal any, but if it helped, maybe, just maybe, the human would reward it with one out of kindness.
With this naïve hope, it slowly collected the orbs. With all nearby spirits killed, it could take its time without fear of being eaten.
The orbs were numerous, but the little spirit had a unique way of storing them.
After finishing this, the little spirit rushed to find the human.
