Chapter 859: Ambush in the Shadows

Meanwhile, elsewhere, Seojin Feng was pacing back and forth in frustration. Unable to locate the two Pixiu, his irritation was growing by the second.

"How could they just vanish? How could we lose track of them? What’s going on with the rest of the team? We agreed to work together, but I haven’t even seen them yet!" he fumed.

In order to corner the two Pixiu, they had divided their forces into seven squads. But only five had returned, while two were still missing.

"There’s nothing surprising about that," a calm sword cultivator remarked. "The devils are after both the Pixiu and the humans, and there’s still Huoyan Huasheng and City Lord Wang. Whether they ran into trouble or got tangled up in something, it wouldn’t be unusual."

"No, something’s off," Taejin Yun suddenly said, his face changing.

"What is it?" Everyone immediately gathered around him.

"Those two Pixiu... they’re getting farther away from us!" In his hand, a Gu insect suddenly became restless, completely opposite to its earlier stillness.

Taejin Yun had refined the insect using the Heavenly Dew, and it could only react to creatures tainted by the poison. As long as the distance didn’t exceed a thousand miles, the insect could sense the host’s presence. The calmer the insect, the closer the host. Its current agitation indicated that the host was moving farther and farther away.

"Hurry up chase them!" Taejin Yun shouted, wasting no time as he dashed off in a certain direction at an astonishing speed.

The group stopped discussing and quickly followed, but the Pixiu were incredibly fast, forcing everyone to move at their maximum speed. Gradually, some began to fall behind.

"The city lord is missing! What do we do?" asked one of Taejin Yun’s subordinates, who couldn’t keep up and anxiously looked at Jaewon Li.

"Keep going! We can’t fall too far behind the main group now," Jaewon Li, Taejin Yun’s trusted aide, replied without hesitation.

Just as they were about to speed up, a faint rustling sound came from all around them.

"Who’s there?" Jaewon Li immediately halted, scanning their surroundings with caution.

While everyone was still confused, the rustling grew louder, as if whatever it was, was getting closer.

Suddenly, a scream echoed through the air, followed by an attack that flew from behind, striking one of the subordinates.

With a soft thud, they lost another man.

"Who dares hide in the shadows? Show yourself if you claim to be righteous!" Jaewon Li shouted angrily.

If it had been righteous cultivators attacking them, such a call-out might have drawn them into the open. Unfortunately, this was not the case.

The attacks from the shadows continued. Jaewon Li swiftly drew his large blade, unleashing a flurry of strikes, one of which hit something. With a slicing sound, a piece of greenish skin appeared before them.

"It’s devils! Be careful!" Jaewon Li’s face turned pale. How had the devils known their location, and why were they ambushing them here?

Realizing their cover had been blown, a horde of devils rushed out from all directions in the next moment. Without a word, they charged into the group and began slaughtering indiscriminately.

Jaewon Li quickly realized they were outnumbered. His group was only a dozen strong, while the enemy had dozens, clearly prepared and well-organized.

Understanding they had fallen into a trap, he immediately attempted to escape.

Within the chaos, a distinctive devil suddenly pulled out a bow. As it drew the string, a black arrow materialized, absorbing the surrounding spiritual energy and creating a powerful aura around it.

As soon as the devil released the taut string, the black arrow shot through the air with a deafening sound of wind being torn apart.

Jaewon Li noticed the arrow heading straight for his back and hurriedly tried to block it. However, the immense force behind the arrow sent him flying, blood gushing from his mouth. His eyes widened in shock. "A Lord-level devil? How is this possible!"

In the next second, another formidable devil leaped out from the side, plunging a blade into his body.

Jaewon Li’s eyes flickered for a moment before he went completely still. None of the others were spared either, and soon the area returned to an eerie silence.

"Sir, there are no survivors," the devil who had killed Jaewon Li reported to the Lord-level devil.

"The plan is proceeding well," the Lord-level devil murmured from the shadows beneath the trees, only his cold, glowing green eyes visible.

"Yes, my lord," the devil responded as it returned to the corpses of the human cultivators.

Each body was carefully examined, and they all shared a common trait: no visible signs of severe injury on their bodies’ surfaces.

"Damn it, how did they catch up to us?" Zhar’khaen muttered, thinking they had already escaped, but now sensing several powerful auras approaching rapidly from behind.

"It’s the Heavenly Dew Poison," Vryss’laar said miserably. "The enemy must have some method to track it. You should leave me behind, or none of us will make it out alive."

"No way," Zhar’khaen and Gor’kan said in unison. "If one of us dies, we all die together. If one survives, we all survive together. We won’t leave any of our kin behind."

Zhar’khaen suddenly remembered something. "If you still want to see our fourth kin, then drop that thought. I guarantee you’ll be happy when you do."

"You really found one of our kind?" Vryss’laar’s spirits lifted instantly.

"Of course! And the situation was beyond my expectations. You’ll see for yourself; it’ll definitely surprise you," Zhar’khaen laughed, casting a glance at Gor’kan.

Judging by his reaction, Gor’kan seemed satisfied, as if Zhar’khaen’s findings were different from what they had initially suspected.

"Are we going to find them now?" Vryss’laar asked excitedly.

Zhar’khaen shook his head regretfully. "Not yet. They’re far too weak—so weak you can’t even imagine. We can’t bring danger to them."

He hesitated, refraining from mentioning that there were also two humans. He didn’t want to agitate the others.
