Chapter 860: Chased by Shadows
Chapter 860: Chased by Shadows
Although Zhar’khaen wasn’t fond of humans either, he felt a bit more tolerant toward them than Gor’kan and Vryss’laar did.
"Then let’s lead the humans into another powerful demonic beast’s territory," Gor’kan suggested after a moment of thought, making a swift decision.
"Agreed," both of them nodded without objection.
The three Pixiu quickly led the pursuing humans further away, drawing them deeper into the distance.
Meanwhile, Amalia and Kenny Lin had been waiting for half a day with no sign of the others. Strange noises occasionally came from outside.
"Are we going to keep waiting?" Kenny Lin asked, clearly bored.
"It’s been so long, I fear something bad might’ve happened," Amalia replied, feeling an ominous sense of foreboding.
Kenny Lin gave a sly smile. "Silent Echo Valley is vast. If they truly fled, the humans and devils would probably pursue them."
"And what if someone was affected by the Heavenly Dew Poison? I’ve heard that the poison can be used to raise Gu worms. A fully matured Gu King can track the poison from thousands of miles away."
Ever since he had visited the Hidden Arts Pavilion, he was no longer the illiterate person he once was.
"If they’ve really been poisoned with Heavenly Dew, we should go find them."
Waiting endlessly like this wasn’t an option—they didn’t have time to waste.
"Let’s go, then. I’m starting to feel impatient."
"Impatient to get killed? That Pixiu was right—we’re nothing but weaklings here in Silent Echo Valley," Amalia remarked, self-deprecatingly.
Kenny Lin was clearly dissatisfied. "Can you not be so negative? Under Nascent Soul level, how am I weak?"
Amalia retorted, "...Could you stop adding ’under Nascent Soul’ to everything?"
Kenny Lin replied firmly, "Nope. Without it, I’d really be a weakling."
Amalia had no choice but to tolerate his thick-skinned attitude. Still, if Kenny Lin ever changed his ways, Amalia might find it strange. Their occasional bickering had a way of making life more interesting, though this was something Amalia would never admit to the drama king.
"Why are you staring at me?" Kenny Lin, ever sensitive, immediately noticed Amalia’s gaze.
Amalia averted her eyes, smirking slightly. "Nothing, just thinking—you really are good-looking. I can’t blame those people for being infatuated with you."
Kenny Lin shrugged indifferently. "I don’t care about them, but what about you? Are you infatuated with me?"
Amalia grunted noncommittally and began walking out of their hiding place.
"Don’t dodge the question. You have to answer honestly today," Kenny Lin insisted, sensing Amalia’s rare moment of vulnerability and pressing the issue.
"Alright, I guess so," Amalia’s voice came from up ahead.
Kenny Lin was so excited that he rushed forward and picked Amalia up from behind. "I’ll take that as a yes!"
Being suddenly lifted off the ground, Amalia, "..."
The two of them continued their playful bickering, communicating through sound transmission to avoid being overheard as they made their way through dense forests.
"Stop!" Amalia finally snapped, unable to take Kenny Lin’s persistent teasing any longer. It was precisely because Kenny liked to push boundaries that Amalia hated discussing such topics.
Kenny Lin halted and, quicker than Amalia, scanned the area around them. "Something seems off."
Suddenly, from the depths of the darkness, rustling sounds emerged. A group of a dozen or so devils charged out from the shadows. Initially, they hadn’t noticed the two humans, but upon seeing them, they froze for a moment.
Though it wasn’t an ambush, Amalia remained on high alert, scanning their surroundings warily.
"Boss, there are two humans," one of the devils said, its eyes lighting up as it spotted them.
The leader of the devils glanced at them coldly. "Kill them, but don’t dirty the bodies."
"Yes, sir!" The group of devils charged at them, giving them little time to react.
The devil leader was in the Soul Formation stage. Kenny Lin knew better than to show off, and without hesitation, he grabbed Amalia, turned around, and fled in another direction.
His speed was incredible, quickly putting a distance between them and the pursuing devils.
"Think you can escape so easily?" the devil leader sneered, he immediately gave chase and whistled sharply as he did so.
The whistle was a signal unique to the devils, a method of communication distinct from the signal flares used by humans, though its range was smaller, audible only to those nearby.
Hearing the sound, the devils in the vicinity immediately began converging toward its source.
"He’s signaling to the other devils," Amalia’s voice was cold.
They didn’t have much experience, but they could easily guess what was happening from the situation unfolding before them.
No sooner had she spoken than several devils appeared ahead, freezing momentarily upon seeing them, but then quickly rushing forward to attack.
Kenny Lin didn’t hesitate, immediately changing direction.
However, if they continued like this, they’d likely be surrounded by the devils. They needed to come up with a plan.
"Strange, why are there so many devils nearby?" Amalia keenly sensed that something wasn’t right.
With so many devils around, shouldn’t they be focusing on capturing the Pixiu? Why were they gathering in such numbers here? Or did they have another goal?
This question remained unanswered until they stumbled upon a group of devils surrounding and attacking a band of human cultivators.
When the human cultivators saw them, they were initially overjoyed, but their excitement quickly turned to despair when they realized that Kenny Lin and Amalia were only at the Golden Core and Nascent Soul stages.
The devils moved with brutal efficiency. The human cultivators resisted for only a brief moment before being slaughtered.
During all this, Kenny Lin didn’t pause for an instant. His figure shot forward, and in moments, the number of devils chasing them had grown from a dozen to several dozen.
A massive, dark swarm of devils surged after them, and even stronger auras were rapidly approaching from behind. The good fortune that had allowed them to move safely thus far seemed to have run out.
