Chapter 1016: The Heavenfall Annihilation Formation
As they had speculated, when everyone gathered, they were transported to the same location.
This outcome had been a gamble. If they had been scattered instead, Amalia’s formation would have required switching to the riskiest contingency plan.
A barrage of attacks descended upon them like an overwhelming tidal wave.
"Form the array!" Amalia bellowed.
Immediately, the various sect factions, including wild cultivators like Hanjun Wangye, converged into nine distinct groups. Nine beams of light shot skyward, aligning like an immortal chain.
Faced with the oncoming assault, many cultivators felt terror grip their hearts, suppressing the primal urge to flee.
The next moment, the attacks were blocked by a radiant barrier. Explosions boomed outside the shield, their backlash annihilating several wandering spirits too close to the barrier.
This was the might of the Heavenfall Annihilation Formation, a formation known across the land for its devastating power.
"It works! It actually works!" a few cultivators exclaimed, ecstatic with relief.
Many of them had assumed they were doomed.
The sheer volume of the attacks would have been impossible to evade entirely, and even avoiding direct hits wouldn’t have spared them from the aftershock. Avoiding injury seemed unthinkable.
"The Heavenfall Annihilation Formation!" Temujin Lei who is standing with Seonho Ming and the other Eternal One Sect disciples, occupied one of the array’s positions, channeling their spiritual energy without pause to sustain its operation.
"Is this really the Heavenfall Annihilation Formation?" Seonho Ming’s face was a mask of shock. He had, of course, heard of the formation’s fearsome reputation.
Legend had it that tens of thousands of devils had once been obliterated by this very formation. The elders in his sect often spoke of it with reverence.
Temujin Lei replied solemnly, "There’s no doubt. However, this must be a simplified version. The true Heavenfall Annihilation Formation is said to be tens or even hundreds of times more complex than this."
"Perhaps we could..." Seonho Ming began, lowering his voice.
"Don’t even think about it," Temujin Lei interrupted. "The formation is intricately interconnected. We only know fragments. The core lies in the formation’s core."
His gaze shifted to Kenny Lin, who stood at the formation’s core, his expression neutral but his eyes deep and watchful. Temujin Lei tightened his own gaze, trying to suppress the killing intent threatening to surface, lest Kenny Lin detect it.
Before the emergence of the wandering spirit, the Green Lotus Sect and Eternal One Sect had been mortal enemies. Even after millennia, the grudge remained unresolved, its flames far from extinguished.
"Damn it, is there really no other way?" Seonho Ming muttered, his frustration palpable.
"She is well aware of the grudge between Eternal One Sect and Green Lotus Sect, so if she dared to involve us, she must have some contingency plan," Temujin Lei muttered. Though he had considered this possibility, it was merely a passing thought. Their greatest enemy at the moment was the wandering spirit in the Body Integration Stage.
Seonho Ming understood this reasoning in his heart but couldn’t help his frustration. He only vented his discontent aloud.
Within the group of wild cultivators led by Hanjun Wangye, three individuals were pretending to "channel" their spiritual energy.
They were devils in disguise. After assimilating human cultivators, their spiritual energy had been converted into devil power. The energy they channeled came from a storage artifact bestowed upon them by their superior to use in emergencies.
Initially, they thought the artifact’s reserves wouldn’t be necessary until they left the Path of All Immortals. If not for this prior preparation, they might have already been exposed.
"This formation..." one of the devils murmured, finding the array oddly familiar.
"It’s the Heavenfall Annihilation Formation—the one that annihilated tens of thousands of our devil kin. But its power seems to pale compared to the original version," the devil leader said, his face darkening.
Since that devastating battle, the devil race had been terrified of the Heavenfall Annihilation Formation. Its power was unparalleled.
Fortunately for them, deploying the formation consumed immense resources, and it had only been used to its full potential once, a battle that cemented its legendary status.
"My lord, now is the perfect opportunity," another devil transmitted telepathically.
The devil leader discreetly scanned their surroundings, his eyes cold and calculating. These human prodigies represented the future of their race. If they all perished here, the human sects would inevitably suffer a severe generational gap.
Without these promising young elites, the sects’ successors would lack the strength to lead. They would be no match for the devil prodigies, paving the way for the devil race to conquer Mystic Void Continent by eliminating a critical obstacle.
But still...
"No. Our mission is to bring back the items we obtained in the Path of All Immortals," the devil leader replied.
"My lord, we only acquired two boxes in the Path of All Immortals. Though they’re divine artifacts, they have no direct relevance to what we need. Their utility is limited. However, if we seize this chance to let the wandering spirit eliminate these prodigies, it would directly impact the future power balance," the second devil argued.
"I agree with Molos," added another devil.
"I need more time to think," the devil leader said grimly. He needed to make the most rational decision.
"My lord, there’s no time left! This simplified Heavenfall Annihilation Formation is formidable. If the wandering spirit fails to break it, the humans might escape! Time is of the essence—this is our only chance to wipe them all out in one stroke," his subordinate urged.
Both devils looked resolute. "For the eternal glory of the devil race and its future, we are willing to sacrifice everything!" they declared fervently.
"Very well. Since you’re all willing to risk it, I have no reason to hesitate. However, this must be handled cautiously—I suspect these humans may have a hidden countermeasure," the devil leader finally agreed. Truthfully, his inner scales had already tipped in this direction; he just needed his subordinates to push him.
"Don’t worry, my lord. I’m willing to take the lead!" Locke declared without hesitation.
