Chapter 35: I am Guilty.
"Yes. He’s a slimy snake but, snakes always leave a trail, not because they want to but because they can’t help it. And Drew is a very careless one. His greed clouded his judgement, making him take bribes from them directly into his bank accounts without thinking of what could become of him if there should be a reckoning. So we will search for his trail and get him to confess." Tristan explained.
"Like hell he would." Theo muttered for the first time, running his hand across his face.
"He wouldn’t. Not willingly anyway. But we will make him talk. And while we search for him, we’d dig into the shell companies and organizations to find more concrete proof that they belong to Luther Corp, and I have a strong feeling that Luther uses them to launder money. I really hope I’m right because it will only make this case juicer." Tristan said, taking a large sip from his water. All the talking was exhausting him.
"And I suppose you’re going to hack into their server?" Sampson asked, although it sounded a little like a sentence.
"Yes, he will." Troy said." We’d need to know where to start looking. We don’t need anything much. Just some confessions, some ’willingly’ given copies of their waivers and proof of money laundering and that is more than enough to make a very juicy gate trap, one that would crash their stocks at once, giving them no way out." He explained.
"Hmmm." Sampson sighed, going over their bizarre plan in his head. To him it was filled with holes upon holes. "Luther is a slimy snake and coward who loves to play dirty. Would you play dirty when he starts?" He questioned, study Tristan’s face, because he knew the entire thing was his plan.
"Oh yes, we will. If it comes to that. Although we do not plan on giving him enough time for that. I plan on prepping him first, something to tilt his boat, so he doesn’t pay attention to the holes I’m making on the other side." He replied, like he had it all figured out in his head, but Sampson wasn’t done asking questions yet.
"I have another question, its a bit personal." On his last statement, he could see their expressions change into one that was cutting him off from their minds. "It’s not about your mates." He said in understanding, and it worked, because they opened up again, not completely.
"Why are you playing the short game? You usually play the long one." Sampson pointed out, scrutinizing his every move.
"This game is long." Tristan deadpanned, already knowing what his father was playing at.
"You know what I mean, Tristan." Sampson said plainly, clearly not liking the denial.
"We’ve known Andrew since we were very young. The three of us, Cole and Andrew were as tight as thieves. When it turned out that we could have just one Beta, I felt something shift between us. I should have known that that was his conscience. It hurts a lot to know he did this to us despite everything we’ve been true, so yes I want this to come and go quickly. I want to see him suffer the consequences of betrayal." Tristan said in a low tone.
"So you feel guilty?" Sampson said, looking at his son with pity.
"I don’t feel guilty. I am guilty." He retorted, his fingers itching to text Beth.
"Okay. I understand." Sampson replied, his tone low as well. He could understand Tristan’s pain but he knew there was nothing he could do but help him actualise his plans. "I’d think about these plans and we’d meet same time next tomorrow to talk again. Take care." He said, leaving his seat.
Just as he approached the door, he put his hand on Tristan’s shoulder.
"In every step of the way, you’ve got your family. Don’t forget that. We are a team and you are not an island." With that he left the room, the tension in the room leaving after him.
After a while of silence, Theo sighed. "Tristan." He called, getting is brother’s attention.
"You know you’re not the only guilty one right? And this isn’t just your revenge. He played us as well, he played everybody, including his parents and that wasn’t just because he was sad or felt cheated, he was fucking greedy.-"
"-And yet, we believed in him. You did, I did, Troy did. We’re grown ass adults so you do not have to take the blame for us. He played us all, so we all are guilty and he deserves a revenge served hot and sizzling."
"I’m with him on this one." Troy chimed. "You might be older than us by two minutes, but we are brothers and partners. We’d show him what happens when you step on the lions tail."
From the way Tristan looked at them, no words needed to be spoken, no appreciations needed, just understanding. Drew made them his worst nemesis, and they were definitely going to deliver.
Three firm knocks on the door interrupted their exchange. They already knew who it was so they just sat quietly, wondering why he knocked.
"You guys done?" Cole said, peeping from a space created by the half opened door.
"And since when did you start knocking, Cole? Barging in is literally your signature." Troy retorted, going to the refrigerator to get something to drink.
"Suck it up, Mister. You guys seemed to have needed privacy so I had to knock." Cole pointed out, grabbing a soda for himself.
"And now he respects privacy." Theo muttered.
"I do, you mishaps. Besides, I can see no one’s happy that I arrived safely." Cole said, giving them accusing looks from over the bottle in his mouth.
"Oh please. You arrived three hours ago, I’m not sure I want to know what you’ve been doing." Troy responded, slapping on his shaven skull and he returned to his seat.
"It’s none of your business." Cole snapped, taking a huge gulp from his bottle.
"Oh I’m sure your mate would beg to differ." Theo replied,a smug smirk on his lips.
