Chapter 28: The Heat.

"Honey!" Jen called from downstairs. "Hurry up. You dad has started the car."

"Alright." Beth said, shutting her room door and running down the stairs.

"You changed your top." Jen pointed out as she got to the bottom of the stairs, handing her a bag, containing her phone and other things.

"Yeah. That top was way too pretty for this kind of job, including these jeans, but they’d manage." She said, taking the bag. "Thank you so much, Mother."

"Anytime baby, I put a bagel in there for you and your father. Now hurry, you don’t want to get your head bitten off."

Chuckling, Beth walked out the front door, shutting it and running to where Raymond sat patiently in his steaming car.

"Finally decided to show up, huh?" He said as she shut the door, putting on her seatbelt.

"So sorry, had to change." She said.

"No qualms. You nervous? You might not have noticed them before, but you’d definitely notice them today." He said, sparing her a small glance.

"Well, honestly. I’m looking forward to it." She said blushing a little, causing Raymond to crack a full blown laughter.

"Effects of the early years of the mate bond, I see." He commented. "Wanted to ask yesterday. Did you guys ..um consummate the bond?" He asked a bit awkwardly and she was beet red almost immediately.

"Oh, you did." He said, his eyebrows shooting up to his hairline. "My, my. That explains the scent."

"No, Dad." She said finally finding her voice.

"Oh, no. My baby is shy. This is a first." He teased.

"Dad! " She squeaked.

"The bond really changes people." He continued teasing.

"Dad, we didn’t." She said.

"You didn’t?" He asked.

"No, we didn’t." She replied.

"Okay. But you guys did something." He stated, testing the waters, and with the way her cheeks crimsoned, he knew he was correct. "You really did." He added nodding, smiling a little.

"Not too deep." Beth said, swallowing. Never in her life had she imagined having such conversation with her father.

"Well, I believe you know what’s coming." He stated again, not turning to look at her this time. He’d heard enough of his daughter’s ’activities’ in one day.

"What is it?" She asked, genuinely confused.

"The Heat. You guys have triggered it." He said giving her a plain look.

"Shit." She cursed.

"No cursing in my vehicle, baby. Are you guys announcing soon?" He asked, although he felt he knew the answer already.

"No, we aren’t. I asked them not to. I don’t think I’m ready for all that publicity yet." She said softly.

"I understand. Makes perfect sense. But that means, the entire period of your heat would have to be spent in the city. First timers tend to attract a very wide range of suitors and attention. I’m not sure either of you guys would want that." He said, spotting a space in the parking lot and driving in.

Turning off the car, he turned to face his baby. "I can speak to them about that for you, if you want." He offered, genuine concern in his voice.

"Thank you, Dad. I’d try first, if I can. If I can’t, I’d let you know."

"Alright then. I’d be waiting. C’mon. We are late." He said stepping out of the car, Beth following suit.

She took a deep breath as they approached the pack house, so many scents, blasting her nostrils at the same time. But she subconsciously searched for some very unique ones. Not being able to spot them, she pushed the thought to the back of her head, walking beside her father.

"Alpha Sampson is hosting a meeting with some other Alphas today, so the house would be pretty busy and we’d be in charge, so I’d need you to be on your A-game. Would that be possible, honey?"

"At your service, Sir." She said, feigning an automated voice, causing Raymond to laugh a little as they stepped into the pack house.

True to his words, the pack house was really busy. The common room was being cleaned thoroughly even though to Beth it was always spotless, the kitchen was in a frenzy, everyone seemed to have a chore, orders were flying around and so was fire and fried foods.

"Dad, are you sure it’s just Alphas we’re hosting? I honestly think it might be another pack." Beth chimed.

"Well, we are about to find out."

"Mr Sage. Good morning." A voice greeted, making Beth freeze instantly, not sure if she should stay or walk away, she shifted closer to her father, who instinctually placed his arm over her shoulder protectively.

"Troy." Raymond said, beaming. "Fancy seeing you here. You’re usually not around."

"Well, I don’t think I’d be leaving soon. I have some very important things I need to take care of." He chimed, his eyes on Beth.

"Oh, I see. Well, I hope you have a great morning. We are going to head to work. We have hosts to prepare for." Raymond retorted.

"Alright, then. I’d leave you guys to it." Troy said, his eyes still on her. "Hi, Bethany." He said softly.

"Hi, Troy." She replied softly.

"I’d see you guys later. Take care." He said walking away, but not without brushing his arm on hers, sending a jolt of electricity through her, her cheeks going beet red.

"Baby, you sure that was all that happened? Because that was intense." Raymond whispered as they approached his office.

"Yes, Dad. That was all that happened."

"Well, if that’s the case, then your heat is very fast approaching. So you’d have to let them know." He poised.

"I will, Dad. And that’s enough talks about my ’Heat’ for today. Let’s focus on these Alphas." She was tired of going red over and over again. Plus she was a bit worried about the heat.

"Yes, ma’am." He said. " Oh, you’d be in charge of the kitchen, I’d be in charge of decorating and organizing."

"Dad." She whined. "You know the women are not exactly fond of me. They wouldn’t even listen to me."

"That’s because you plead with them. You might be eighteen, but you have an aura of someone bigger and stronger. Show them that and they’d know not to mess with you."

"Okay." She said, nodding, even though she had absolutely no clue on how to carry that out.

The day was going to be a long one.
