Fangless: The Alpha's Vampire Mate
Chapter 82: Secrets of the Fangless

Chapter 82: Secrets of the Fangless

"We can’t be sure of it. Let’s not jump to conclusions without evidence," Zane cautioned, noticing how Thorin was already making assumptions and wanting to prevent the Alpha from acting on them.

Puck’s eyes darted toward the elder. He realized what Zane was worried about, so he quickly voiced his support.

"Zane is right. I’ll look more into it. For now, don’t do anything rash!" Puck warned.

Puck had been Thorin’s best friend since they were young, and he was the only one who dared to knock some sense into Thorin’s head so bluntly.

Thorin was a wise leader who acted in the interest of the whole pack. Despite his shortcomings and big ego, he always considered his people before making big decisions.

That was usually the case. However, when it came to Riona, Thorin often seemed to lose his judgment and acted on impulse.

’Had her impulsiveness rubbed off on him?’ Puck wondered.

After that, Puck returned the book to its original place. They had considered taking it with them but decided against it, fearing its absence might alarm the vampire king.

In several meetings among the werewolves trio, both formal and informal, the matter came up frequently. The werewolves came up with new perspectives, trying to uncover the secrets not written in the diary.

Meanwhile, Puck’s investigation was slowed down due to the incident during the Nightwarden Trials. Officials and high-ranking nobles went out and about around the palace, making it difficult for Puck to move without being noticed.

Additionally, there were no official records about the werewolf. It appeared that the vampires were erasing him from their history. Probably out of shame.

Vampires considered themselves superior to werewolves, and having their crown princess elope with one was a disgrace big enough it could shatter the whole kingdom.

Eventually, Puck discovered that once Amara learned she was pregnant, she was evicted from the royal palace. She and her werewolf husband lived outside the palace walls.

Armed with this information, Puck headed to the nearby town to gather more details. Vampires lived significantly longer than other races, with even the weakest living up to two hundred years before they wilted away.

After canvassing almost the entire inner town, Puck found it. The home where Amara and her family once lived.

It was about a fifteen-minute walk from the south gate of the royal palace but over an hour from the front gate—and Puck had come through the front gate.

Neighbors confirmed that Amara had lived there for a year. They remembered well because they adored her little girl, who was active and very cute–just like her mother. They often looked after her when her parents were out working.

None of them knew that Amara was the crown princess. Some suspected the husband’s identity as a werewolf, but since he treated everyone kindly, no one spoke about it.

Puck learned that Amara and her family moved every year. He surmised they did this to evade their pursuers. This town was their last known residence before they died.

During his investigation, Puck came across the name of the werewolf husband: Remus. The infamous Remus. Puck tried to hide his astonishment from the vampires.

Unbelievable! Riona’s father is that Remus?

With a sense of urgency, he quickened his pace to return to the royal palace. He needed to relay this critical information to Thorin and Zane as soon as possible.

***

Thorin had only ever heard of that rumor in passing, never expecting any grain of truth in it.

A long time ago, it was said that a powerful Alpha, the only werewolf ever granted the power of the Blood Moon child, had abandoned his pack in an effort to evade an attack from a rival pack.

That was what was officially taught by the elders, including Zane. But there were whispers about the matter, calling it a distortion of truth to cover up what really happened.

It was said that the Alpha had fallen in love with a vampire, and to escape scrutiny and social stigma, they had chosen to flee and live in hiding for the rest of their lives. Since then, there had been no trace of the Alpha.

"This is... could it be...?" Puck hesitated. He didn’t care to continue his sentence as if uttering the words would defy Zane.

There were many werewolves with that name, so it might not be the specific Remus he had in mind.

"You don’t mean... he is the Remus?" Thorin blurted out the name despite himself.

Zane, the elder, was equally perplexed. He didn’t think the younger werewolves were merely talking nonsense.

Instances of werewolves marrying other races were rare, and in the case of a werewolf falling in love and having a child with a vampire—there was only one such.

Everything fit into the puzzle now.

No one knew if he truly abandoned his pack to save himself, but the attack eventually led him to this palace. That was how he met Amara, the crown princess of the Kingdom of Eira.

The reason for his disappearance and inability to return to his pack was likely because the woman he loved was in this kingdom. Moreover, they had a child together, making it even more impossible for him to leave.

Amara had been kicked out of the palace, practically disowned by her family, but leaving the Kingdom of Eira would still be too dangerous for her and little Riona.

If he was indeed the Remus from the tales Thorin had heard, then the world outside this kingdom would be far, far more dangerous for his family.

His greatest enemy was the Zacharia clan, and even if the Zacharias didn’t get involved, there were countless other packs who wished him dead.

If they learned about Riona, they would stop at nothing to use her to get to Remus.

"It’s not too far-fetched," Zane said, slowly accepting it as fact rather than mere speculation.

Thorin gritted his teeth. His plan to bring Riona with him to Wintertooth would not change. He still desired the power she could provide, and at the same time, he still wanted to help her escape this hell.

He knew it was dangerous, but it would only be dangerous if Remus were near her. Since Remus was gone, Riona should be safe as long as her identity remained concealed.

"No one can know about this," Thorin commanded in a low, stern voice.
