Chapter 83: Howl’s Meltdown
Chapter 83: Howl’s Meltdown
It wasn’t just about Riona; it was also about Florian. He couldn’t leave him in the palace any longer—not after being pushed down the stairs. Who knew what might happen next?
He knew he shouldn’t compare Florian to his younger self. Florian was far luckier. At least he had Riona, who was entirely devoted to him. Thorin, on the other hand, had no one at that time.
So, no matter what, he was determined to get them out of there. Riona had werewolf blood running in her veins, she would adapt to the pack with no trouble. As long as no one discovered who her father was, the siblings should be safe.
That’s what he thought, but sometimes, reality makes jokes on you.
Looking at Puck and Zane—his only allies in the palace—he clasped his hands together and pleaded, "Please, help me..."
An Alpha was not supposed to ask for help. An Alpha was meant to make decisions for everyone, for both himself and the pack. But Thorin was at a loss. He didn’t know what to do. Even an Alpha could feel lost sometimes.
Zane might be an elder, and an elder needed to be strict to ensure the sustainability of the pack, but he had always been the softest when it came to Thorin.
Despite knowing the great danger and challenges ahead of them if Thorin insisted on bringing home Remus’s daughter, he couldn’t just stay idly when the Alpha was begging for his help with those puppy eyes.
Zane had cared for Thorin since he was a pup, and in his eyes, Thorin would always be just that—a pup. With a resigned sigh, Zane showed his willingness to yield.
Puck noticed the elder’s surrender. He spun around sharply, glaring at Zane. "No, Zane! You can’t give in. This is madness! There’s too much at stake here. We can’t afford to think only of ourselves, and certainly not indulge this reckless Alpha’s personal whims."
Turning to Thorin, Puck’s face flushed with anger. "Hey, Alpha! We all see you have a thing for her. You won’t even admit it, but now you’re ready to jeopardize the entire pack just to take her and her brother in? Have you lost your mind?"
Leave it to Puck to lash out without restraint. He hated being the Howl—the second in command of the pack. Could he resign from such a job?
A Howl was supposed to assist the Alpha in managing the pack, executing wise decisions, and providing rational insights. However, his role had morphed into that of restraining the Alpha from making dumb choices.
In reality, Zane thought of the same thing. He shared Puck’s concerns. Riona was a risk.
Secrets had a way of coming out sooner or later. How would Thorin protect the whole pack when the truth about her paternal lineage was known to the world?
However, Zane had a deep respect for Thorin as an Alpha. Thorin had earned his position through merit, not inheritance.
Moreover, Thorin was someone who cared a lot about his reputation and how others perceived him. Zane trusted that Thorin had not made this decision lightly. Though he couldn’t read Thorin’s mind, he believed the Alpha’s choice was made not just for himself, but for Wintertooth.
Little did the elder know that the biggest driver of Thorin’s decision was, as Puck had speculated, his infatuation for Riona.
"I knew I could count on you!" Thorin exclaimed. His gloomy expression instantly brightened.
Puck straightened his back and rolled his eyes. With his hands on his hips, he whined at the elder, "How could you not see what he was doing? He deliberately used his puppy eyes, knowing they would definitely entrap you!"
Instead of taking him seriously, Zane only laughed, waving dismissively. As expected, a father would always side with his son. Although they were not related by blood, Zane considered Thorin his own son.
"Come on, Puck. You’re too hard on him. Can’t you give him a little break?"
Puck’s eyes widened. It felt as if his eyeballs would roll down the floor any second. He just couldn’t believe his ears. "Give him a little break? Why doesn’t he give me a little break?"
He ran a hand over his face, groaning. What has this world become? I can’t stand it anymore.
Puck felt like the only sane person in the room, yet no one was willing to listen to him. Ignored and discarded, he dragged himself to another sofa, distancing himself from the Alpha and the smitten elder.
"Suit yourself. I don’t want to get involved. You do you," Puck muttered, sinking into the sofa.
He said that, but eventually, he couldn’t resist joining the conversation. His frustration grew as Thorin continued proposing ridiculous and unrealistic ideas.
"Are you serious, Thorin? Is that the best you can come up with?" Puck snapped, already moving back to the sofa with Zane.
Puck being Puck, he grabbed a parchment and began sketching the layout of the royal palace from memory. He even noted the number of guards at each station, including those guarding Riona’s room.
"Wow! You’re amazing, Puck!" Thorin clapped like a seal, almost mocking Puck’s eagerness despite himself.
But Puck wasn’t eager; he was simply frustrated. Nevertheless, the Howl contributed significantly to the planning. Yet, they still hadn’t solved the biggest problem: the spell.
"No matter how smooth our plan is, if Riona can’t get out of that room, we’re doomed to fail," Puck pointed out, stating the obvious.
"You’re right," Thorin nodded, turning serious.
"Let’s find out more about the spell. See if we can do something to weaken it. Once it’s weakened, we’ll strike," Zane suggested.
Thorin immediately agreed. This would be their next step, though Puck would handle most of the work since it was his specialty.
While waiting for updates from Puck—who couldn’t stop complaining as he left to begin his research—Thorin visited Riona. He revealed the plan and asked if she had any ideas.
"For now, nothing. But I can ask Sir Orlo to bring me books about spells. Maybe I’ll find something useful," she said.
