Chapter 81: The Locked Diary
freeweɓnovel.cѳmIt wasn’t immediately clear to Thorin what made Riona’s power so unique. Though he had his suspicions about her significant strength, the reality proved far more bizarre than he had anticipated.
Vampires were strong—he admitted that, but Riona’s level was beyond comprehension. The fact that she was the Blood Moon might explain her strength.
However, it didn’t explain why she couldn’t transform into a bat and why she didn’t grow fangs.
It bothered Thorin, but he didn’t think too much of it. At that time, Thorin was only focusing on how to get the Blood Moon child to give him the power he deserved to have.
Initially, Thorin had planned to gain the Blood Moon child’s trust through bribery. He had intended to slowly get close to whoever it was, and once he gained the Blood Moon child’s trust, he would ask directly.
In reality, he was caught by surprise on his first day at the royal palace of Eira. He was still on a hot pursuit of the Blood Moon child, but he was distracted by Riona.
She had sent a plump vampire chef into the garden, shattering the window in the process. Her face was flushed, and she would stop at nothing until she hurt the chef as much as she set her mind to.
Thorin was instantly blown away. He admired Riona’s formidable strength and the way she paid no heed to others’ control.
Having grown up as a werewolf, he was taught that vampires were rigid and compliant, especially regarding hierarchy and other absurd customs. Seeing Riona wreak havoc in a place that worshipped rules was like a breath of fresh air.
Puck and Zane believed he was infatuated with Riona, but infatuation was such a strong word. Thorin’s interest was more about curiosity than anything else.
He couldn’t deny that the time they had spent together had deepened his feelings. But it was no more than the natural affection and care that often develops in friendships.
When Puck first investigated Riona’s background, he found the diary. It was from that diary that they learned about Riona’s true identity as the rightful heir to the throne.
"How did vampires learn spells that only werewolves were supposed to know? Is there some kind of new technology we haven’t heard of?" Thorin asked.
Puck had brought him and Zane to the secret chamber. He showed the book to them, which they were examining now.
The Howl shook his head. "A technology of that nature wouldn’t stay hidden for long. We’d at least hear rumors about it."
As they continued to study the diary, Zane suggested, "What if a werewolf wrote and concealed it?"
The idea was impossible. Actually, it was =the most logical explanation. After all, only a few werewolves could pull off this specific spell.
But this led to more questions. "Why would a werewolf write this diary and leave it here, in the den of vampires?"
It was a valid question. One could argue that the werewolf hid the diary among the vampires to prevent other werewolves from finding it.
Yet, it seemed counterintuitive to use a security measure that only werewolves could bypass if the goal was to keep it secret from them. It didn’t make much sense.
If he were so eager to keep this diary a secret from werewolves, he wouldn’t have used a spell that only they could decipher.
"He might have wanted other werewolves to find the diary and read his message. It’s just that, for some reason, he was trapped here," Puck suggested, offering a different perspective.
"Trapped?" Thorin raised an eyebrow, struggling to accept the notion. It wasn’t so much that he couldn’t believe it—it was that he didn’t want to.
The idea of a werewolf being imprisoned in a vampire’s domain was an insult to his sense of werewolf pride. He couldn’t imagine a werewolf willingly submitting to such a fate; they would fight to the last breath rather than pen a diary.
"Or maybe he wasn’t trapped," Zane interjected, pointing to specific phrases in the diary. "Perhaps he chose to stay here because he had something—or someone—precious to him."
A new life had grown inside Amara, and as I had sung a lullaby to her belly, I had hoped she would resemble her mother, and she does! When I held her in my arms, I was brought to my knees by the sight of her.
She was small and lovely, and I vowed to cherish and protect her all her life, ensuring she knew she was loved.
But we are being pursued.
It breaks my heart to think that my child might grow up without her parents, but we cannot run forever.
I don’t have much time left. I know we’re being targeted. That’s why I leave this book as evidence. In case I or Amara die, just know that we must be murdered.
The room fell silent as everyone momentarily froze. No one could find the words to describe their feelings.
"Riona is... half werewolf?" Puck voiced what everyone was thinking.
If her mother was a vampire and her father was indeed a werewolf, as they speculated, then she was a halfling.
There were not many halflings in the world. Most of them lived quietly in remote areas because they were often looked down upon by those with pure blood.
Some halflings grew up hiding their mixed heritage to maintain a peaceful life. Typically, halflings inherited traits from one of their races, allowing them to blend in and pass as a certain race.
In Riona’s case, she looked entirely like a vampire, except for her eyes. Her sky-blue eyes, though unusual, complemented her appearance so well that they didn’t seem out of place.
The werewolf blood in her, Thorin surmised, must have prevented her from developing fangs the way vampires should. It also stopped her from transforming into a bat.
He didn’t know whether she could transform into a full wolf or not, but he was certain she had never tried.
