Chapter 828: Chapter 822: Please Choose Your Mentor
Song Lan had a talking bird, and based on Guan Lili’s years of experience, she found it to be a highly distinctive setting. However, much to her disappointment, it seemed that the other party hadn’t brought it to the fourth district.
When Guan Lili raised the question, Song Lan’s heart also lurched.
He didn’t know if Lu Xiang had left enough food for Yeying before she left. With the little girl’s autonomous eating ability, if there was a lack of food, by the time they returned home, it’s very likely the couch, television, and washing machine would have been eaten by her.
After a brief self-introduction, the shooting in the afternoon began.
The identity of a Military Intelligence Section Seven agent made Song Lan the mentor for this season’s intelligence studies course.
The site manager handed him a form outlining the curriculum and assessment methods the production team had devised for the students, all designed by professionals.
Even though the champion of each season of "Master of Rescuers" was preselected by the company, they still required each contestant to be assessed by the standards of a one-star rescuer.
In fact, the contestants who made it to the top four each season generally met the United Government’s requirements for a one-star rescuer.
Those acquainted with the rescuer department knew that it also had its share of people who were just marking time.
The title of a one-star rescuer was enough for them to secure a decent position in some small towns, work steadily for a decade or so, and lead a stable life for the rest of their days.
After the direction of the season was set, the contestants faced their first outdoor intelligence operation.
This was also their first time doing on-location filming after several days of training.
The filming location was in a block near Kolo Film Industry, and during the shoot, they had to use all their wits to gather intelligence on the Civil Assassin Organization.
Of course, the company didn’t really expect these contestants to solve the issue; they only used these investigations to gauge each contestant’s ability to gather intelligence.
As the mentor for the intelligence studies course, Song Lan automatically became the judge for this operation.
This wasn’t his first time being a mentor.
Elmon, Hanna, Yeying, and Diago could all be considered successful cases from his teaching career.
This time, he drew upon the experience of his predecessors and fully embodied the spirit of a sports teacher—after bringing the contestants to the square in front of Kolo Film Industry, he dismissed the group, allowing all contestants to go about their activities freely, while he found a nearby café, sat in the air conditioning, in a quiet corner.
Years of experience led Song Lan to understand that free time was the favorite part of the program for both students and sports teachers.
Yet, it seemed not everyone had such discernment.
Sean Grant followed him in, along with a little tail and a cameraman.
Song Lan remembered this girl, named Veronica, who was under 20 years old, was the internally preselected champion of this season by Kolo Film Industry.
Veronica’s parents worked in the Counter-Intelligence Department, and she herself had aspired to be a proud rescuer since her childhood. Her parents had smoothed out the relations for her and arranged her future path prior to the show’s shooting.
Song Lan vaguely saw a shadow of Hanna in her.
Or rather, it seemed that the children of corporate executives were mostly like this; their entire lives were planned out before they even came of age.
"I want to make it clear in advance that this is your first assessment, and I won’t be giving you any extra tips," Song Lan stated, facing the camera with the integrity expected of a mentor.
"I understand, Mentor Lucky. Actually, you’ve already given tips to everyone," Veronica replied confidently, sitting across from Song Lan, looking out the window across the distant street.
The Kolo Film Industry logo and the entire square could be easily seen from here.
"This is the best position to monitor Kolo Film Industry. If I were an assassin, I would survey the area from here."
In front of Song Lan, the chief executor of Military Intelligence Section Seven, Veronica didn’t show any fear, her tone full of confidence as she idly twirled her golden bangs with her forefinger—a habitual gesture when she was thinking that also served to create a distinctive personal feature for the show.
Her lips curled slightly upward, like an honor student eager to impress the teacher before her, "I saw that after you disbanded the group, Mentor Lucky, you came directly to this café. I think that’s the hint you gave us because the first victim was Mikaela, and the assassin has likely been targeting her for a long time."
Unfortunately, not all contestants could understand Mentor Lucky’s intentions.
Even Mentor Lucky himself had not realized that his simple act of entering the café carried such deep significance.
The reason Song Lan chose this café was actually because it had air conditioning and the sign at the door also mentioned free wifi.
"Veronica," Song Lan clarified, since, for the sake of Mr. Lucky’s public image, he couldn’t reveal his truest thoughts in front of the camera, he cleared his throat and continued, "I heard your parents work in the Counter-Intelligence Department."
"Indeed, I’ve learned a lot from them."
"So what do you plan to do next?"
"If the assassin had come here to scout out the place, the staff would have a strong impression of them."
"Good, then start your investigation," Song Lan said, affirming her approach.
With Song Lan’s approval, Veronica walked towards the counter, unable to hide the delight in her eyes.
