Chapter 829: Chapter 822: Please Choose Your Mentor_2
At this time, the coffee shop was rather quiet, with only a few scattered customers sitting at various spots. After she took the photographer away, Sean Grant said, "Veronica is different from those coddled mistresses, she has great potential."
He was somewhat worried that Song Lan might deliberately make things difficult for Veronica because her parents worked in the Counter-Intelligence Department.
Everyone knew that the Counter-Intelligence Department and Military Intelligence Section Seven had long been at odds; both were critical intelligence agencies of the United Government, and in recent years, the situation had increasingly resembled an ’only one tiger on the mountain’ scenario.
"You can tell."
"Did you come to District Four to investigate those killers?"
"No, you can think of it as my personal vacation."
Even agents of the United Government needed rest, and Song Lan felt this reason was very sufficient. He had come with the mindset of enjoying his vacation, adopting a spectator’s stance towards Mikaela’s death and the impending turmoil at Kolo Film Industry.
After the reply, both of them fell into silence simultaneously.
As Veronica said, through the glass next to them, one could clearly see the magnificent building of Kolo Film Industry. Over the past few decades, the company’s founder had built an entertainment empire, turning this city into what people saw as Dream Chasing City.
Now, the entertainment godfather was there in the office located on the top floor.
He had set up a comprehensive trap there and wouldn’t be going home tonight or the following few days.
According to the script, he was supposed to die at home.
The body would be dismembered, and the Law Enforcers investigating the scene would ultimately find his missing head in a safe.
This made Song Lan curious as well.
If this entertainment godfather decided to live in his office for the rest of his life without stepping outside, would the killers change their plans?
Meanwhile, Veronica’s investigation was proceeding in an orderly manner.
Although the coffee shop’s employees claimed they had never seen anyone similar, she didn’t give up. At her insistence, the employees reluctantly took Veronica to the monitoring room.
People can lie, but machines can’t.
She deftly checked the coffee shop’s surveillance footage from the past few months.
The investigation soon made significant progress. Although Veronica didn’t see any sign of the killer in the surveillance footage, she noticed that someone had tampered with all the recordings. The method was quite concealed; had she not been through professional training, she might have been fooled.
"I already told you, there hasn’t been a consistent customer sitting in the spot you mentioned."
The coffee shop employee clenched their fists nervously.
"I want to hear your reason."
Veronica stared down the other with forceful eyes. "Why did you tamper with the surveillance footage? Lying is useless. Even though your methods are very covert, as soon as these recordings are sent for professional analysis, the same results will be obtained. According to the procedure, the Abnormal Case Investigation Bureau will take control of everyone in this coffee shop, and your freedom will be restricted until the case is resolved."
"I, I don’t know what you’re talking about."
The employee pursed their lips.
In the midst of speaking, their eyes involuntarily flicked towards the door outside.
Veronica could distinctly see a person wrapped tightly in a trench coat passing by there.
"Don’t let him get away!"
It took her several seconds to react.
This coffee shop was a hint given by Mentor Lucky; she knew she could find clues here, but she never expected to actually encounter someone from the killer organization in the shop.
This shout was for the photographer to hear.
Even if they couldn’t catch the killer on the spot, as long as they captured his appearance, the "Skynet" system would allow them to track him down afterwards.
Veronica got up and ran towards the door, leading the charge.
Her parents had taught her some grappling techniques, particularly useful in confined spaces.
However, just as she was about to take her second step, a dazzling brightness stung her eyes, the light coming from nowhere, causing her to instinctively shield her eyes with both hands.
Suddenly, she lost her balance, her feet slipping as if on ice, throwing her entire body into mid-air.
When she came to, Veronica found herself lying face-up on the ground, having taken a hard fall that knocked the wind out of her and slowed her breathing. A strong sense of dizziness nearly robbed her totally of her vision, as double images dominated her sight.
A moment later, the sound of clinking and clanking came from behind her.
Even though she couldn’t see, she guessed that the photographer following her had also taken a nasty fall, dropping all his camera equipment on the ground.
The noise sounded exaggerated, like something out of a cartoon special effect.
"Are you guys... okay?"
Moments later, Sean Grant, who had heard the noise, came over and, upon seeing Veronica and the photographer, his tone suddenly became very strange.
"Gr-Grant Teacher."
Veronica’s voice was halting; she couldn’t figure out what was happening to her.
It was just a fall, yet every sensory system in her body had gone haywire.
First it was her vision, then her hearing, and now even her speech was affected. She could only see a blurry silhouette and had to rely on the other person’s voice to identify him.
She vaguely saw him pointing at his head, and besides hearing his voice, Veronica also heard chirping noises.
The scene behind the coffee shop left Sean Grant also in a bewildered state, "Mr. Lucky, what’s going on?"
The good news was, Veronica had merely fallen and was not harmed.
The bad news was that three birds had sprouted atop each of their heads, chirping merrily as they circled.
Song Lan, experienced as ever, put his hands on Veronica’s shoulders and gave her a few vigorous shakes.
The three circling yellow birds disappeared, and her gaze gradually cleared.
Veronica finally noticed the source of the blinding light.
It was the floor beneath their feet.
It was so clean it could reflect light, a condition only seen in cartoons.
She and the photographer were unharmed, but the bad news was that the photographer’s equipment was generously sacrificed, shattered into black components on the ground, clearly beyond any use.
"Mentor Lucky, the assassin was here just now!"
"I know, and he’s a Psychic."
This familiar ability reminded Song Lan of someone.
Although Veronica had potential, she also had the recklessness of her age. If the other party had harbored any intent to kill, the outcome would have been more than just a heavy fall."
"Next, is the first lesson I have to teach you, Veronica, what’s your identity?"
"... A trainee?"
"No."
"An intelligence officer?"
"Is that so? But I haven’t seen the shadow of an intelligence officer in you, your recent actions made me think you were a berserker."
Song Lan’s sarcastic comment made Veronica’s face turn red up to her neck.
She realized that Teacher Lucky on the show was as good at making sarcastic remarks as the "Angry Mentor" Sean Grant, and thankfully the photographer’s equipment was broken, otherwise, if this segment was aired, she might end up being dubbed "The Berserker".
"As an intelligence officer, your task is not to capture the target by yourself, but to prioritize how to keep yourself safe and get the information out. "
"I understand, Teacher Lucky."
Veronica lowered her head in shame.
"Leave this place to us, you should go to the nearby prosthetic hospital to get checked out."
Song Lan glanced at the staff member cowering helplessly in the corner of the surveillance room and said to Sean Grant, "Go with them. I’ll stay here."
