Chapter 806: Chapter 804: Serial Killer
Luxury hover cars, villa districts, famous videos, and Sean Grant.
These were all scenes that only appeared in Grella’s dreams, yet now they were truly happening in her life.
Sean Grant had actually brought her back to his mansion in the villa district. She had a premonition that her identity information would soon be dug out by the internet, and along with it, her experiences in District Four over the past few years would be transparently publicized in the form of a leak.
"Take a seat."
When they arrived in the living room, Sean Grant selected a type of liquor that Grella had never seen before from the cabinet and poured a glass for both of them, "Maybe this will help you stabilize your emotions. Right now, I need you to brace yourself, for when the person who wants you dead comes knocking again, to confirm their identity."
Grella felt like her current experience was just like those movie scripts.
The case that had alarmed the national rescuers had come to light, and she, fortuitously, had become the only survivor—this was the kind of special treatment only a movie heroine would receive.
She was not unfamiliar with the number 23.
The enthusiastic patron she met on the rooftop had mentioned this number while trying to persuade her.
"The attackers must be from your film crew."
Sean Grant offered a hint.
"...Why?"
Grella was somewhat astonished, always feeling that the man sitting in front of her knew the case better than she did, the party involved. His every word and action were exactly like the famous detective August Quinn in "Doubtful Case Pursuit"!
"At the end of Powell’s script, the serial killer receives the punishment he deserves. Even though the diagnosis shows he suffers from the so-called mental illness, after discussion, the Law Enforcers decided to send this entirely wicked demon to the electric chair."
An ending that perfectly matched the theme of District Four.
Grella was very familiar with this script; she had finally obtained the chance to star as the lead actress, but in the end, she was told that the movie would not be able to hit the theaters, their efforts over the past few months would all come to naught.
"However, Powell also prepared another open ending."
"...Another ending?"
Grella paused, she, being part of the crew, had never heard about a hidden ending to the story. She admitted that she had lost control of her emotions when she heard that the movie would not be screened, and left the crew in anger before all filming was officially completed.
"One night, sometime after the execution of the serial killer, the heroine in the story wakes up in her hotel room. Some strange noises from outside catch her attention, and just as she decides to investigate, the already dead serial killer suddenly bursts in through the door, chasing her to the rooftop, and the final scene ends with the heroine falling to her death."
A classic twist ending, echoing the first act where the heroine witnesses the serial killer committing murder due to sounds from outside the hotel, while also leaving the audience room for open discussion.
The serial killer somehow avoids punishment, or perhaps the heroine suffers from severe mental illness due to prolonged fear, ultimately leading to her death from the fall.
In District Four, this kind of technique is not uncommon, it was used in movies like "Call Shock" more than a decade ago.
Sean Grant said, "That means, if we go by the true ending of the script, you, as the leading lady, would ultimately die from a fall."
"I don’t understand what you mean; everything you just said is from the script."
"Now, the story in the script has been reflected in reality. The 23 people before you have all experienced the same; although they played different roles in the script, all were involved in scenes of falling from a building, and after filming ended, they indeed fell from the rooftop of their places one night."
Sean Grant said, "There must be some connection here, the attacker very likely was involved in the filming of these 23 crews."
Grella felt her hairs stand on end, fear making her nails dig into the flesh of her legs as she sought to use the pain to forcibly steady herself.
But the thought that before she met him, he had already killed at least 23 people filled her heart with a chilling dread.
This wasn’t a tale from a fictional script, but a true story where a serial killer had set his sights on her, and it was very likely he would strike at her again.
"That’s the problem, I’ve investigated the personnel of these 23 drama crews and haven’t found a suspect that fits the criteria mentioned, so I need you to help me recall if you encountered any suspicious individuals during the filming process,"
Grella stared at the clear, translucent liquid in the glass and downed it in one gulp.
The scorching sensation stimulated her taste buds and spread throughout her body, her consciousness becoming somewhat hazy.
She always avoided drinking in the past, God knows what those people would mix into the alcohol, a slight inattention and she might wake up the next day in a hotel room, disheveled.
This was also characteristic of the Fourth District.
But now, she felt this haziness might help her recall some details easily overlooked.
She closed her eyes, remembering the moment Powell found her and told her she was chosen as the leading lady.
That was probably the beginning of this nightmare.
"...There was a janitor, looked to be just over fifty."
After what felt like an eternity, she opened her eyes and said, "He was very interested in the filming and often talked to Powell about the script during breaks."
"Janitor..."
At this, Sean Grant had a moment of clarity.
In the Fourth District, janitors were often temporary personnel and might not even be recorded on the crew list, especially with small-time directors like Powell, where the internal division of labor was extremely informal.
He had indeed suspected these janitorial and logistic staff before, but most of them did not leave their names.
But this was at least a breakthrough clue, giving his investigation a new direction.
If, as Grella said, the janitor always talked to Powell about the script, then he should have a very deep impression. Once he found the janitor, he had ways to make him reveal the truth.
"I’ll find this person you’ve mentioned, but before that... There are guest rooms and disposable toiletries on the second floor, you’ve been through a lot today, you must be exhausted, go rest for a while, you are temporarily safe with me."
"Mr. Sean Grant, may I ask you a question?"
Before heading to the second floor, Grella suddenly mustered up the courage to ask.
"Go ahead."
"Why are you so invested in this case?"
For someone of Sean Grant’s caliber, a national-level rescuer, their lives were never supposed to intersect.
In her mind, maybe among those 23 victims, there was someone of special significance to him.
"Why?"
Sean Grant looked directly into Grella’s eyes, "Because I am a rescuer, it’s my duty."
