Chapter 585: Chapter 585: Rescue Plan_1

"Are you okay?"

As soon as Song Lan had been brought back, Lu Xiang approached him and immediately began lifting his clothes and sleeves to check for any signs of torture inflicted by the Barrosa Group during the interrogation.

However, her rationality told her that if the Barrosa Group had really done that, Song Lan would likely have returned alone, and a "natural gas explosion" incident might have already occurred outside.

It was rare for her to have thoughts that went beyond reason.

Despite Song Lan’s claims that he was fine, she stubbornly completed the check-up.

Then, they were released by the genetically modified soldiers of the Third Legion who were guarding them, and they returned to a hotel that was now completely deserted.

Compared to their first day in Antigon, the hotel now looked no different from a murder house, even though the corpses on the first floor had been cleared by the soldiers of the Barrosa Group. However, there were still bloodstains on the floors and walls, and even in some corners, there were fragments of flesh and things that resembled human organs.

The mutated hotel owner had previously conducted a bloody massacre in his own hotel before coming up to their rooms.

The timid Song Lan realized that the hotel was definitely no longer fit for living in, believing that spending a night there would only result in nightmares, which went against his life principle of never carrying the fatigue of one day into the next.

Fortunately, according to the strategic agreement discussed by both parties, they would leave Antigon before nightfall today.

Song Lan shared with Lu Xiang the conversation he had had with the commander of the Third Legion, whose expression, unsurprisingly, grew increasingly solemn as the conversation progressed.

This made Lu Xiang realize once again that the United Government’s control over "the outside" was growing weaker and weaker.

On the other hand, the information disclosed by the commander of the Third Legion also answered why the Barrosa Group possessed more advanced genetic technology than the United Government. Ever since the Cloud Biological Pharmaceutical accident, the United Government’s research on the Devourers had been at a standstill.

The only Devourer in the territory had become an independent research center in Sector Seventeen under the influence of Song Lan.

Subsequently, she thought about the cause these genetically modified soldiers were engaged in, and despite the different standings, she couldn’t help but feel respect for them.

With the genetic technology and technical capabilities they currently possessed, if they were to ally with the Rebel Army and start a full-scale war with the United Government, it would be enough to spark a comprehensive war on the scale of the third world war. Yet they had been hiding in the shadows all these years, silently battling the mutants created by "God."

But...

Speaking of rebellion, one must mention that damned little dark one, "Rat"!

Spreading rumors about her everywhere, to the point where her "infamy" had even reached the ears of the Barrosa Group, she suspected that now probably every Neutral Country passed by the Esinvig Army may be confused by such rumors.

Even officers of the United Government couldn’t achieve infamy like hers.

On the surface, Lu Xiang remained composed, but in reality, her teeth gnashed audibly.

"According to intelligence obtained by the Barrosa Group, Archbishop Helifis withdrew his forces to Antigon, then went alone to ’the Pit.’ That’s also the purpose behind capturing the Angels of Death."

For a long time, every legion had been preparing for this day.

"There exists some kind of telepathic connection between the Angels of Death and Helifis, and she can lead us deep into ’the Pit’ to find the Archbishop’s hiding place."

Song Lan laid out the plan he had discussed with the commander of the Third Legion.

Although the Angels of Death had rather simplistic thinking due to their early experiences, to be safe, they couldn’t afford to be too obvious.

"After night falls, we’ll rescue Yeying and let her guide us to ’the Pit’ to find the Archbishop’s whereabouts."

"You’re just cheating a kid!"

Lu Xiang blurted out.

All along their journey, Song Lan had hardly told Yeying a single truth, yet the young girl kept running around in front of Song Lan, taking everything he said as gospel.

"There’s no choice, they said that Yeying is the Archbishop’s favorite, so they surmise that the telepathic connection between Yeying and the Archbishop should be the strongest."

"They know even this?"

"Father Aige said it, it was his dying declaration, so the credibility should be very high."

To dispel mutual suspicions among them, the Third Legion’s commander even disclosed to Lu Xiang the true reason Father Aige had died—villains die from talking too much.

He clearly had enough time to board the hovercraft, flee the country, and begin his retirement. The Barrosa Group did indeed intend to honor its promise to let him leave, but who could have predicted that after Yeying was subdued, he would start lecturing regardless of the situation.

This might just be an occupational hazard for a priest.

In the end, just as he was about to reveal the Archbishop’s recent situation, she had no choice but to end him with the help of Yeying.

The Third Legion’s commander might have been trying to illustrate that the Barrosa Group keeps its promises, unless the cooperating party courts its own death.

"What do you plan to do?"

"This is the night shift change and patrol map provided by the Third Legion’s commander. If there’s any slip-up, they’ll cooperate with us as much as possible to let Yeying out of the cage."

Song Lan cleared his throat and said, "When the time comes, I will persuade her to take us to Helifis, making the excuse that Antigon has completely fallen and urgently needs the Archbishop to take charge."

"It sounds feasible, but... don’t you feel any guilt?"

"Yes."

Song Lan nodded, "That’s why I negotiated an additional agreement with the Third Legion’s commander—no matter the outcome of the Final Sacrifice, they must cancel the plan to reclaim the ’Angel of Death.’ By then, we can embrace the spirit of the Bug Swarm and welcome these homeless girls to join our big family."

This was undoubtedly a huge gain for the Bug Swarm.

They could form a force that only takes orders from Lu Xiang, which is precisely what they’re best at.

From then on, everyone would be one of us, and there would be nothing to hold grudges against each other for.

In the calm wait, night had fallen.

A day had passed since the "Angel of Death" had been locked up and displayed in the square, and even though their wounds had healed as good as new, hunger and thirst had left them in a weakened state.

As the developers of gene drugs, the Barrosa Group understood them better than the Lunar Eclipse Sect did.

As long as their food and water supply was cut off, their fighting strength would rapidly diminish.

When Song Lan and Lu Xiang found Yeying under the cover of darkness, the faint glow in the girl’s pupils had dimmed quite a bit. With her head drooping listlessly, she leaned against the edge of the cage, looking as if her power was about to run out.

"Shh, don’t make a sound, we’re here to rescue you."

Upon seeing Yeying, Song Lan immediately pulled out the trump card he had prepared, "Here’s a steamed bun."

Like a dying blaze rekindled, a gleaming light burst forth from Yeying’s eyes.

The surrounding "Angels of Death" noticed the commotion near their cage, their amber pupils flickering incessantly like light bulbs.

Yeying, as if afraid that the steamed bun would be snatched away, bit into it directly. Had Song Lan not reacted swiftly, he suspected Yeying would have taken a bite out of his hand as well.

The scene was akin to walking into a zoo at night and encountering the anticipation of small animals waiting to be fed.

"We knocked out the guards watching over you; we’re getting you out now."

Yeying chewed on the steamed bun with big bites.

She glanced at the stick in Song Lan’s hand, then at the gene-enhanced soldier who had collapsed nearby on the stairs, clad in exoskeleton armor with even his head protected by metal, and fell into contemplation.

Even Song Lan couldn’t help but break out in a few drops of cold sweat.

He admitted that there were some minor slip-ups in the execution of their rescue plan, like when he struck the guard with the stick and the man showed no reaction. It took Song Lan’s reminder for the soldier to jolt dramatically and then heavily fall to the ground. During this, the gene-enhanced soldier "accidentally" dropped the keys to the cage with exaggerated acting.

Clearly, acting wasn’t part of the military training for legion soldiers, and for his exaggerated performance, Song Lan could only give a score of 1.0.

Fortunately, the person they were rescuing was Yeying, and the steamed bun had already blinded her eyes.

After observing for a while, Yeying finally swallowed the steamed bun and said with surprise, "I thought you were just a civilian and couldn’t fight, but I didn’t expect you to be so formidable!"
