Chapter 584: Chapter 584: God, Truly Exists_1

Song Lan did remember Yeying mentioning that in the doctrine of the Lunar Eclipse Sect, they believed strong faith could endow them with power from the "Father God’s" commandments.

And reality had indeed proven this point.

From a statistical point of view, as long as you believed in the Moon God and became a Believer of the Lunar Eclipse Sect, there was a one-in-three chance of becoming a Psychic.

If this data were made public within the territory of the United Government, Song Lan had no doubt that more than half of the people living at the bottom would become the most devout Believers of the Moon God.

But the consequences were also obvious.

The war last night had shown the side effects of this Psychic parasitism: at any necessary moment, they could be influenced by the "Father God’s" consciousness and mutate into irrational Mutants in a short time.

The sudden plague of mutations made Song Lan believe the assertions of the Third Legion’s commander, but on the path of "dehumanization," the Barrosa Group was no less intense than the Believers of the Lunar Eclipse Sect; according to Lu Xiang’s autopsy results, even the most common genetically-modified soldiers had been implanted with two hearts, and all organs were almost completely replaced. To better adapt to the exoskeleton armor, their physiques deviated from ordinary people, and it was hard to categorize them as normal humans anymore.

But then, he thought of the growing Bug Swarm.

As it turned out, neither of the three brothers had the grounds to mock the other—their main forces were unlikely to find a unit comprised entirely of "pureblood" humans.

Song Lan felt that in this world currently dominated by humans, discussing the concept of "pureblood" humans seemed somewhat premature.

"Implanting consciousness in human bodies to grant them powers akin to Psychic Abilities is something beyond human capabilities, making us realize that perhaps ’God’ truly exists."

This was also why the Barrosa Group decided to put aside past grievances with District 17 and Lu Xiang, to cooperate fully; because more critical issues faced them than personal vendettas or partial power losses.

All the signs they had researched indicated that this could ultimately turn into a war affecting everyone.

"And the Devourer is the mark it left in this world."

The common ground between the Lunar Eclipse Sect, the Barrosa Group, and the Bug Swarm lay in the Devourers.

"While our investigations indicate that the Devourers were originally created by Cloud Biological Pharmaceutical, during that experimental accident, including the guards, all personnel died. The sole survivor of the subsequent investigation team was Medea, the former director of Cloud Biological’s ’external’ affairs department. She is currently the only person who may still be alive and who has had contact with the research secrets."

As the Barrosa Group followed this lead in their investigation, they found that Medea eventually disappeared in District 17.

This later became the birthplace of the Bug Swarm and the Void, with some rumors on the city’s networks suggesting Medea was not only alive but had become the "Pollution Master."

"Researchers of the Barrosa Group came up with a hypothesis: perhaps from the beginning, the Devourers were not a creation of human research. That unknown entity cast a part of its body into this world, which is why after the accident erupted, Cloud Biological Pharmaceutical couldn’t complete the recovery, allowing it to spread across the world."

"But, why?"

Song Lan couldn’t help but ask.

"To drive humanity... no, all life forms to complete evolution."

Although the genetic experts at the Barrosa Group were reluctant to admit it, the reality was clear: Devourers were not created for humans. In fact, Mutants were more easily adaptable to the changes they brought.

"And this is the true nature of the Final Sacrifice: amongst the Devourers scattered around the world, to select a victor to guide the direction of the future evolution of life."

It was a selection mode akin to the law of the jungle.

Following the "Father God’s" will, in this "battle royale," there could only be one survivor, and the person promoting this ritual was the Archbishop of the Lunar Eclipse Sect, Helifis—both the host and a direct participant of the ritual.

"In recent years, the Barrosa Group has been covertly investigating the whereabouts of other Devourers. A portion of those still underdeveloped, we brought back to our organization as key research materials, while the majority that were fully matured and irretrievable, we destroyed."

In fact, many years ago, the plan for the genetically-modified soldier legion had been put on the agenda by the council. Her birth was not much later than that of the "Angel of Death," these earliest gene-modified bodies. And ever since she had memory, she lived amidst endless training and battling against Devourers and Mutant constructs.

But they couldn’t stop.

Because the Devourers evolved too quickly; each day they rested on their legion’s flagship, somewhere in the world a Mutant army ruled by Devourers might emerge.

"According to the intelligence we’ve gathered, the three most powerful branches of the Devourers are now inside the Third Neutral Country."

"So you want to join forces with us to take out Helifis first?"

"No, Helifis is just the spokesperson for that consciousness. What should be eradicated is the source of all Devourers. We have a feeling that in the end of this ritual, we will see its true form."

At this point, the Third Legion’s commander’s gaze was intense, and his displayed mettle even made Song Lan admire, "The significance of this strategic alliance is that, whether it’s us or you who ultimately win this ritual, we must not forget the real enemy, nor submit to its will."

This ritual, driving the evolution of all life, might not necessarily be good for humanity itself.

Even if humans managed to survive this evolutionary process, they would likely evolve into some other life form.

That is why the ultimate victor must not be Helifis, who had already submitted to the "Father God’s" will; and they had good reason to believe that the current Helifis might have become an unprecedentedly formidable enemy under the influence of this will and power.

Occupying Antigon was just the beginning of the ritual.

A more perilous battle awaited them ahead.

"This war is also closely related to you; if you don’t want your leader to become a puppet of some unknown will, convey what I’ve said to Lu Xiang exactly as it is," said the Third Legion’s commander. "God might indeed exist, but it certainly doesn’t love any of us."
