Chapter 547: Chapter 547: The Bet_1

Meanwhile, in the office building of the Ragus Foundation in District Seventeen.

A seemingly quiet girl sat in the corner of a large conference room. It was as if she sensed something and wanted to jot something down in her notebook, but just as the tip of her pen was about to touch the paper, her pupils suddenly constricted and her body involuntarily trembled.

This scene did not escape Qi He’s eyes.

He stopped the work he was doing and momentarily shifted his focus from the various assessments sent from the headquarters, glancing at his watch.

"Time flies, I didn’t realize it was already this time."

These past few days, his time had been almost entirely occupied by work. The headquarters placed great importance on the investment in District Seventeen, and their future plan was to build a new business empire in this city closest to the Void, which was both a tremendous risk and an unprecedented opportunity.

He said casually, "Director Lu and Chief Song should have already met with that person by now, right?"

Although he thoughtfully omitted any direct reference, the literary girl still could not avoid trembling slightly. Even a vague reference was enough to trigger the fear deep within her heart, and the painful memories had become a conditioned response.

In terms of results, the education at Purple Wisteria College was undoubtedly successful.

Even though they had already removed the electric restraints from the child, as soon as those memories were triggered, her body would submit to the company’s commands one step ahead.

The student leader who once sounded the horn of rebellion had now become a docile lamb.

Indeed, they had cultivated a rare talent for the company and the foundation. Her abilities gave the company an edge in business negotiations and various games at the Review Meetings.

"If you want to write, then write," he said.

Qi He glanced at the blank pages of the notebook.

This was the ability known as "Chronicles of Time," which could almost rewrite causality, making it seem like the exact antithesis to the theory of fate.

As long as the objective conditions in the real world allowed for the possibility of a result, whatever was written in the notebook would be realized.

There was a time when this child spent years at Purple Wisteria College creating all the necessary conditions for change to happen. However, there was an accident during the activation of her abilities.

As a punishment for the failure of change, this ability became an important tool for the development of the Ragus Foundation.

When the "risks" in venture investments were completely eliminated, all that remained for them in this world was the outcome of success.

"Don’t worry, whatever you write in there today, I won’t tell anyone. It’s a reward for your diligent work," he said with a smile, but then, his tone changed abruptly, "But you must also know that whatever you write pertaining to that matter will not come to pass, right?"

The literary girl turned pale. She stared at the notebook for a long while before finally closing it.

The voice that echoed in her mind like a demon made her realize that struggling was merely a reenactment of her painful memories.

This was an expected outcome, yet it made Qi He frown.

He had to once again marvel at the effectiveness of Purple Wisteria College’s education, so much so that many years after the upheaval, the events that transpired were still branded in the girl’s instincts.

Even though he had hired the most senior psychologist in a personal capacity, they were still at a loss concerning the girl’s current state.

The psychologist believed that unless the memories of her student days were completely erased, Purple Wisteria College would continue to control her like invisible chains.

What annoyed Qi He even more was the girl’s next action.

After closing the notebook, she cast a pleading look towards him.

"Then, let me tell you something you might not know," he said, "this concerns the foundation’s investment strategies in District Seventeen... Do you know why the foundation has decided to base its future development strategy on such an unknown new concept as the Void?"

The girl shook her head blankly.

She was more accustomed to following orders, and thinking often proved to be a painful process for her.

Qi He leaned back in his office chair, having once asked himself the same question.

Although he had originally proposed the plan, he had not anticipated that the foundation’s decision-makers would unanimously pass the proposal, let alone prepare the corresponding investment plan in such a short time.

Were they doing it for the "Void creations" that had recently become popular in high society?

Or did they want to explore the truth behind those unknown creatures?

Qi He gradually dismissed these thoughts. For the company, the auction house was just one of its businesses; the benefits brought by "Void creations" were ultimately negligible. And in reality, the headquarters hadn’t actually recruited any real investigators; all investigative work was preferred to be handed over to the Void Investigation Bureau, an organization that popped up out of nowhere.

All they had to do was spend a lot of money to buy intelligence.

"Until that person’s opinion made me realize another possibility,"

He used "that person" to obscure the principal’s name, never having imagined that the principal, with no apparent connection to District Seventeen, would be the most important supporter of the plan. His reason for support was simple and clear—he firmly believed that the Void truly existed.

The Void was just what the people of District Seventeen called those unknown areas and creatures.

The principal, on the other hand, was accustomed to referring to it as the upper world.

He seemed to think that it was the birthplace of Psychic Abilities, and all his current research was an attempt to touch that deeper world that humanity had never explored.

Qi He remembered the day after the meeting when the principal had sought him out alone; the topic of the Void was so compelling that this man, who almost never expressed his opinions at meetings, had dragged him into a conversation that lasted far too long. But in fact, they had never supported the plan for the same reason.

"This topic might also involve you. It is said that person is pursuing the ultimate path of an Ability User. According to his theory, once he really touches that world, he will completely break away from the human category and become another form of life,"

Speaking of this, Qi He laughed at himself, "And I have delivered all the conditions necessary for him to complete the Ceremony right to his doorstep, so you better not regard me as a good person."

He locked eyes with the girl.

He seldom expressed his genuinely true thoughts.

In the end, he was a businessman, and for a businessman, this was a win-win situation.

No one could predict the direction of this trial.

"No matter what the outcome of this conflict, I’m the beneficiary."

"...Will they win?"

After a long while, the literature-loving girl finally made a sound, her voice always so soft.

"I don’t know."

Their eyes met.

For businessmen, their lives were always in an environment where risk and opportunity coexisted, and this time was no exception. Moreover, he had personally delivered this huge risk to the principal’s doorstep.

Qi He had a premonition that the outcome of this wager would be revealed soon.

He saw a flash of disappointment in the girl’s eyes.

His voice lowered, "I hope they win."
