Chapter 548: Chapter 548: In the Rain_1
The torrential rain continued unabated.
Even without being at the scene, Song Lan did not miss the duel deep within the storm.
At this moment, the teachers and students had all sought shelter inside buildings, leaving only the principal and Angle Saffire alone on the vast school playground. They walked toward each other, enacting a duel reminiscent of cowboy showdowns from centuries past.
As he took in the confrontation, Song Lan was also pondering another issue.
Every member of the "Bad Boys" squad was prepared to sacrifice themselves. They had tried their utmost to send information about the principal’s abilities to Xinya on paper planes. The usually timid Xinya finally overcame her fear and delivered this crucial note into Angle’s hands.
The rebellion sparked by several generations of students seemed to finally be bearing fruit.
"Destiny" had bestowed upon the principal the ability to render all Spiritual Energy ineffective, making him the natural enemy of nearly every Psychic. "Justice" represented the course of "Destiny" itself. On the surface, this duel was undoubtedly unfathomable.
Yet Song Lan noticed another puzzle that no one else had touched upon.
He had sensed it from their first day at Purple Wisteria Academy.
This academy, symbolizing the hall of Psychics of the United Government, did not belong to the United Government or any known place in the world. It was like a place cut off from the rest of the world. The doubts in his heart deepened the more he observed the situation outside the school.
This place did not belong to anywhere in the world, and even its composition was filled with bizarre elements.
Strange and twisted monsters teemed outside the school, and the majority of them seemed to be mutations of humans, resembling an amalgamation of humans with various machines and objects. Purple Wisteria Academy introduced a new rule—when students destroyed these Consciousness Entities, the defeated monsters would merge into their bodies, becoming part of their Psychic Abilities.
This was also the main reason why students who explored outside became increasingly stronger.
Before this, no one had ever proposed such a monstrous way of leveling up for Psychics.
If Psychics could really become stronger in this manner, the United Government’s high-level Ability Users would have flooded the streets long ago.
Song Lan also noticed the bizarre patchwork composition of the external areas of the campus. They didn’t seem to belong to the same era. During his explorations outside the school, he found a medieval village, a city destroyed by the Third War, and a town engulfed in plague.
These made them seem less like the real world and more like a product of imagination.
Only imagination could construct such an absurd world.
When all these clues intertwined, Song Lan couldn’t help but have a new suspicion.
What the rebels had desperately uncovered, was it really the principal’s true ability?
The duel in the rain scripted a hymn of challenge from the rebels to the United Government, with each detail appearing as though it had been pre-written for a play, including the duel itself.
Two people who knew each other intimately fought in silence amidst the downpour.
After an initial bout of testing attacks, Angle Saffire gradually gained the upper hand. Once his abilities were revealed, the principal could no longer maintain his usual calm demeanor. His white coat was torn and tattered, and his body was covered with wounds, his blood nearly drenching him.
The information on the paper played a key role.
By then, the principal, like a villain driven to desperation, grew anxious and irate, denouncing the students’ betrayal. This contrasted sharply with his previous image. If this were a superhero film produced by Kolo Film Industry, the principal’s performance would undoubtedly meet all the traits of a final villain.
But once those traits were transferred to reality, they gave off a sense of distortion.
"For a Psychic, your ability is indeed invincible..."
Angle also gasped heavily, his body riddled with wounds. This was the first time he had been hurt since gaining his abilities.
His chest was sliced open, revealing the bulletproof coating and the prosthetic tissue beneath the skin.
The coating around his heart protected him from a fatal injury, and the skin on his left face was peeled off, coupled with his old-fashioned mechanical eye, giving his left side the appearance of a cybernetic monster.
Luckily, having undergone Prosthesis Modification, he had survived several wounds that would have been fatal to an ordinary person.
Each attack, without exception, proved that the Headmaster’s assault was more than enough to overpass the barrier forged by Luck, truly and palpably striking him.
During his escape, Angle also found some information about "Justice".
Perhaps "Justice" is indestructible.
However, those who were chosen by "Justice" had been replaced many times; they burned themselves out upon completing their mission, just like those who dreamt of fame and broadcast their names to every corner of the United Government, and now, he seemed to be doing the same.
He wasn’t immortal, and this showdown, akin to one in a movie, appeared to be the last stop on his journey.
"However, what you’re facing now isn’t a Psychic, but the calamity of this world."
That was the information he obtained at the cost of two fatal wounds, "Your ability cannot erase the misfortune that lies beyond comprehension."
Angle watched as the Headmaster’s figure teetered in the rain; the scene unfolding before his eyes was indeed a different picture.
He saw "the future".
This time, it was much clearer than ever before.
In the near future, this demon that shrouded the school would fall into a pool of blood, a fatal wound in his heart. Not only that, but "Fate" seemed to have also sketched out a path for him to reach this predetermined destiny.
Angle took action once again.
The surrounding noises seemed to drift further and further away from him; he saw the Headmaster bellowing in anger and desperation, but all the noise had been shut out.
The Headmaster wasn’t used to being injured, perhaps his overwhelming power meant he had never tasted the feeling of a severe blow.
He had fallen into a state close to madness.
Angle took one last look at the Headmaster’s expression.
The distance was closing in, "Fate" was set on this point.
But the Headmaster, ignoring the approaching Angle, looked around in panic.
Angle was just a decoy.
When and how would the next disaster strike him?
"Bang—!"
The sound of a gun, fired at close quarters, interrupted his thoughts and forced his gaze back onto Angle.
Angle’s right hand was pressed against his chest, the gunshot coming from the palm of his hand.
It was the most basic military-grade prosthesis modification.
What followed was suffocation and a sense of impending death.
His chest was pierced by the bullet, and everything in front of him seemed to confirm their assessment of Psychics—even with unpredictable abilities, their physical strength was mostly no different from that of ordinary people.
Which meant that when their hearts were shot, they would die just like any other person.
Time seemed to stop at that moment.
Fate was fulfilled.
But Angle saw a scene that was extremely eerie.
Faced with the fate of death, the Headmaster, like him, showed a look of relief.
