Chapter 545: Chapter 545: The Lubricant of the Workplace_1
Regrettably, the Principal’s question ultimately remained unanswered.
An unexpected torrential downpour swept over Purple Wisteria Academy, abruptly interrupting the Principal’s speech. As the dark clouds loomed, he found his gaze drifting towards the window.
As Lu Xiang also noticed the changes outside the window, he immediately recalled the events Song Lan had mentioned, which had happened on another timeline that was erased.
This was no ordinary weather change; the unceasingly falling rain could transform into the most lethal weapon, penetrating human bodies on impact.
"Very regrettable."
The Principal, whose conversation was in full swing, had no choice but to stand up and bid farewell to the two.
He had not yet completely unraveled the mysteries of fate. To achieve the concept of Ascension, he still needed to go through a series of specific Ceremonies and steps. For now, he could only vaguely sense the presence of fate and those "higher consciousnesses."
Before leaving, he cast a deep glance at Song Lan.
Being overly engrossed in their chat just now had led him to overlook certain details, but when he calmed down due to the sudden change outside and re-examined the room, he seemed to understand why he had been moved to discuss the results of his years of research.
Song Lan’s skills in setting up a conversation were top-notch, making the atmosphere of the talk pleasant was only one of the reasons.
More importantly, upon meeting Song Lan, the indescribable and irrational premonition inside him grew stronger. He always felt that he might find the answers within the other person.
But...
This seemed a bit too incredible.
This matter, which concerns the ultimate path of every Psychic, could possibly find its resolution in a non-Ability User?
Thus, the Principal remembered the Ragus Foundation’s skepticism toward "enthusiastic citizens."
"Enthusiastic citizens" were always found near Lu Xiang, and so far, almost all firsthand information about the "enthusiastic citizens" had been brought by Lu Xiang.
They seemed to unconditionally trust one another, and if one were to delve into the reasons, they could not help but shift their focus onto another individual.
However, before this, even the Review Meeting was reluctant to casually probe the identity of the "enthusiastic citizen."
There was no point in testing the waters unless they had gathered enough intelligence and were confident in apprehending the "enthusiastic citizen."
Domestic strife and external threats had placed the United Government in an unprecedented situation, leaving them with no more energy to focus on someone from a border city.
Many doubts in the Principal’s mind had now been resolved, and what remained was merely the validation.
And this seemed to be the real purpose of the Ragus Foundation sending the two of them here.
However, there were more pressing matters waiting for him to attend to.
He was just a step away from proposing his "formula," and now, all the elements required to complete the Ceremony were before him. Once he truly took this final step, there would be time enough to consider these trivial matters.
...
Long after the Principal had left, Lu Xiang looked at Song Lan with a bewildered expression.
It had been a long time since she had felt such a sensation of listening to something unintelligible. During the earlier conversation, the Principal spoke of many things, from myths and legends of the Pre-war World to the local culture. He then moved on to speculate about marks left by likely early Psychics, inspired by the cultural symbols people had created.
She had never heard of such a theory from Professor Myles; instead of a rigorous scientific hypothesis, it sounded more like a conjecture filled with free spirit.
Even the Principal himself seemed unable to determine the veracity of his own speculation.
The card depicting the character "Justice" was left on the table in the dormitory, still shimmering with portraits of different individuals. Lu Xiang steadied her mind and casually turned off the card.
What made it even more unbelievable was that no matter how freely the principal let his imagination soar, discoursing on ideas that seemed incredible, Song Lan was able to keep up with his train of thought and offer ample responses right away. It was not hard to see that the principal seemed to be enjoying the conversation a great deal.
"Do you... understand what he was talking about just now?"
After a long silence, Lu Xiang finally spoke up.
"I don’t know."
Song Lan’s answer was decisively straightforward, as if it were a conclusion that didn’t require any contemplation.
And he wasn’t lying.
He was a person who believed in earnest reciprocity. His foundational understanding of psychic abilities was quite weak; he knew far less than Lu Xiang, let alone a principal who had nearly devoted his life to research.
"Then why were you responding to him just now?"
Lu Xiang was confused by Song Lan’s response; she had even begun to think that Song Lan had already walked the path that the principal had outlined.
Becoming a consciousness entity, ascending to a higher plane of existence.
That unknown world was very likely the birthplace of psychic abilities.
All of the above were notes she had taken from their recent conversation. However, those theories were far too advanced, and if she published them on the internet, they would probably be regarded as nothing more than an online novel.
"That’s a different matter," Song Lan shook his head, "That’s a fundamental skill I honed in the workplace."
The down-to-earth Song Lan brought the conversation back from ascension, higher worlds, and the ultimate path of psychics to everyday life, an area with which he was most familiar.
For a mere worker like him, he could ensure that a conversation remained pleasant, even when discussing a topic that held no interest for him.
In other words, even if the conversation shifted from the ultimate path of psychics to makeup, jewelry, or prosthesis modification—areas that were completely alien to Song Lan—the outcome would be unchanged.
Anyone sharing a topic would appreciate having a professional like Song Lan to prop them up.
Even when Lu Xiang brought up those tedious work topics during the Law Enforcers department meetings, he managed to subtly make the atmosphere more relaxed and enjoyable through his efforts.
"So, you see, Manager, you’ve found a treasure. In the year 2167, it’s very difficult to find a workplace lubricant like me."
"Don’t be so slick!"
Lu Xiang glared at Song Lan reproachfully. She was finding herself increasingly susceptible to his persuasions, frequently getting pulled into his frame of thinking without caution.
For example, now, after just one sentence from Song Lan, she couldn’t stop thinking about the concept of a lubricant.
Attempting to cover her own tracks, she shifted her gaze away, coughed lightly, and emphasized, "We are discussing serious matters right now!"
"Understood."
Song Lan’s expression instantly became serious, and as he had said, whether it was important or trivial, he was up to the task.
Despite his limited theoretical knowledge, nothing was more convincing than what he had seen with his own eyes, especially considering that this event had happened not long before.
He still remembered the scene when he was conversing with Mr. Langinus.
It was as if they were situated between universes, in a place that belonged to no corner of this world.
In response to his superior’s question, he offered his view, "Perhaps the other world the principal mentioned truly exists."
