Chapter 517: Chapter 517: January 7th (Part Four)_1
On the road back to the city, Mr. Killer laid out his plan.
The botched commission led to a complete fallout between him and the Special Investigation Bureau.
"Given their style, they’re definitely trying to figure out how to handle the aftermath right now, and their target is you, which means your situation isn’t looking too bright either."
After dropping Song Lan off in the city, the assassin parked the motorcycle at a spot where they could temporarily avoid the torrential rain. He took a bus ticket and a business card from under the motorcycle’s seat and handed them to Song Lan, "This is a ticket to the ’outside world.’ Incidents like today will happen often, so my advice is that you lay low and leave this place for a while."
Clutching the bus ticket handed to him by the assassin, Song Lan’s heart was full of joy and emotion at having made a new friend.
Only, he vaguely felt as if he had been through a similar situation before.
"Have you ever thought about going to the Law Enforcers to expose their conspiracy?"
After thinking for a moment, Song Lan added, "I mean, the director, at least in handling official matters, is someone you can trust."
"I’m not cut out for the same cloth as the Law Enforcers, and besides, do you think the Special Investigation Bureau would leave any substantial evidence in my hands?"
The assassin said, "They found me through intermediaries. Just last night, I figured out who the client was. If I had known it was they who commissioned me, I wouldn’t have taken this job."
One of the principles of a professional assassin is not to deal with official people, and within those from the "official" side, the Special Investigation Bureau had the worst reputation. To them, outsiders were disposable, and if an error occurred during a commission, they wouldn’t hesitate to eliminate the other party.
"As for this business card..."
The assassin continued, "If you manage to survive this ordeal and are lucky enough to gather enough evidence, then you can go to the person on this card; she owes me a favor."
After leaving these instructions behind, he got back on the bike and swiftly vanished from Song Lan’s sight.
Upon bidding farewell to his assassin friend, Song Lan immediately went to the Law Enforcers. Compared to the Special Investigation Bureau, he had some more important things to verify, but the prerequisite was to find a trustworthy person.
...
"Wait a moment..."
After Song Lan finished recounting his experiences of the day, Lu Xiang, sitting at her desk, stretched out her hand to stop Song Lan, and although she had dealt with countless strange cases, she had to reorganize her thoughts, "You’re saying that an agent from the Special Investigation Bureau came to you in private today and wanted to take you to their place?"
This was indeed the style of the bureau.
But then, something outrageous happened.
"Then, your assassin friend blew up the bureau’s car and rescued you from their grasp?"
A professional assassin,
blew up the client’s vehicle,
just to save the target they assigned him from their hands.
After establishing these key pieces of information, her head began to throb faintly, "Tell me honestly, what’s really going on between you two?"
As a rational Law Enforcer, she just couldn’t make sense of the underlying relationships behind the entire event.
"More importantly, did someone important visit the Seventeenth District today?"
Song Lan responded with a question of his own.
As time passed, the premonitions growing in his heart became stronger and stronger, these unfounded feelings always made him suspect that something big was going to happen in the Seventeenth District today.
"How did you know?"
Lu Xiang was stunned. The identity of the VIP should have been kept under the highest level of secrecy; at least bottom-level agents of the investigation bureau and frontier assassins should not have access to this information. So, who could have leaked it to Song Lan?
Moreover, from the moment Song Lan entered her office today, she felt something odd about his words and actions.
"Never mind that, who came?"
Song Lan pressed, hoping that knowing the name would bring more information from his premonitions.
"You’ve met him, Qi He from the Ragus Foundation. He arrived here this morning on a special flight."
The office fell into a brief silence.
After staring at each other for a while, Song Lan suddenly concluded, "It’s not him."
???
"What do you mean it’s not him? I just got off the phone with him. Do you remember meeting him at the exhibition in the Seventh District? He came specifically to discuss the Foundation’s investment and construction plans for the Seventeenth District and to help the Review Meeting resolve the lingering issues with Dream Manufacture."
Lu Xiang was taken aback by Song Lan’s revelations, prompting her to speak more than she typically would at once.
She felt the sensation growing stronger within her.
Why does Song Lan sound like a Dumb Bird when he speaks today?
"I mean, previously it wasn’t him... It might be a bit complex to explain."
The more premonitions Song Lan had, the more convinced he became that these weren’t just effects of a precognitive dream; after his conversation with Lu Xiang, he was becoming increasingly sure that some of his premonitions were tangentially related to actual events.
But of course, he couldn’t just stop people in the street and ask, "Excuse me, sir (or madam), do you feel like you’ve experienced today’s events before?"
Such a question could raise suspicions and he might even be regarded as insane by passers-by.
Luckily, he still had someone he could trust.
He cleared his throat and posed the question that had been bothering him since he woke up that morning, "Old Lu, have you ever felt like today’s events happened before?"
"No."
Lu Xiang’s answer was firm, but she quickly caught on to something and asked, "What, are you having that feeling?"
Being one of the people who knew Song Lan’s abilities best, apart from Song Lan himself, she wouldn’t regard him as crazy.
However, in her understanding, Song Lan’s ability was the most obscure and incomprehensible one she’d seen, and even Song Lan himself might not fully comprehend all aspects of his ability.
The most direct impact others felt after Song Lan’s power was used was a momentary lapse in their thought process.
In past discussions about Song Lan’s abilities, she had once posed a question:
Besides stopping and accelerating time, can you reverse it?
At the time, Song Lan’s answer was no, without any hesitation.
Combining Song Lan’s current question with her thoughts, a new idea began to form in her mind.
"Are you sure ’before’ the VIP visiting the Seventeenth District wasn’t Qi He?"
What she needed to do now was assume that all of Song Lan’s "premonitions" had indeed happened once, as this would help him sort out his thoughts, "Can you recall his name, or any distinguishing features?"
"I don’t know."
Song Lan racked his brain for a while, but no conception formed in his mind.
It’s like trying to remember a person who doesn’t exist, "Anyway, it’s not Qi He."
