Chapter 516: Chapter 516: January 7th (Part Three)_1

Mr. Song Lan was taken away by a black-clad agent from the Abnormal Case Investigation Bureau.

The black sedan drove on the highway, neither side uttering a word along the way.

The agents were surprised by Mr. Song Lan’s silence throughout the journey. To put him at ease and ensure his cooperation, they had prepared many arguments to counter the numerous questions Mr. Song Lan might pose. However, Mr. Song Lan was so compliant that they didn’t know what to say for a moment.

This operation was very important for the Abnormal Case Investigation Bureau. The relationship between Lu Xiang and Mr. Song Lan was no secret, so by "inviting" the latter to visit the Bureau’s facility in District Seventeen, the Review Meeting would have much stronger leverage on the negotiating table.

Lu Xiang was aware of their tactics, so to ensure Mr. Song Lan could be safely questioned, she would have to agree to some demands she would have otherwise refused.

Before long, the fast-moving sedan left the urban area of District Seventeen behind, along with the noise and buildings of the early morning. The agents’ nervous hearts finally eased. According to the navigation system in the car, they would arrive at their destination in about fifteen minutes. Once Mr. Song Lan was delivered to the facility, no accidents would occur.

"Be careful!"

However, as Mr. Song Lan spoke up, all the agents in the car tensed up again, some even reaching for their sidearms and casting vigilant glances outside the windows.

There was only their car on the highway, and no pedestrians were visible on the sidewalks.

To deliver Mr. Song Lan to the facility without fail, the Bureau had issued a martial law decree at this junction earlier.

"Mr. Song Lan, what’s wrong?"

After confirming that there were no wild attackers leaping out of the bushes, the agent sitting beside Mr. Song Lan asked with an awkward face.

Before coming to District Seventeen, they heard this was a special city.

Had it not been for Lu Xiang encountering the secret of Dream Manufacture, they would not have bothered to take the great risk of abducting Mr. Song Lan from his home. It was a last resort.

Initially, the Bureau hoped Hanna would take over the operation, but Hanna claimed that after pursuing Angle Saffire the previous day, her prosthetic body had a severe rejection reaction, leaving her vomiting and suffering from diarrhea all night long. Due to health reasons, she had no choice but to refuse the Bureau’s order.

In fact, before setting off, each of them had braced themselves for a valiant death.

"It’s going to rain," Mr. Song Lan finally added.

Upon hearing this, the agent beside Mr. Song Lan faltered and nearly choked.

Just spit it out all at once! The agent roared inwardly, irritated by Mr. Song Lan’s abrupt remark that made them subconsciously fear an enemy attack.

But to keep Mr. Song Lan’s mood stable, the agent still managed a strained smile and said, "We checked the weather forecast before we left, and it’s supposed to be sunny today, no rain."

Besides, even if it did rain, the agent couldn’t understand what there was to worry about.

Indeed, even Mr. Song Lan didn’t know why exactly he was worried.

Ever since he got in the car, he had been pondering the strange phenomenon that started earlier that morning, mostly ignoring the other agents in the vehicle.

If it were a premonitory dream, the details were incredibly clear, and it lasted an improbably long time.

He did have experiences with premonitory dreams before, but those were mostly fleeting moments of déjà vu, not like now where everything that happened today felt like it had already been experienced in a dream.

Like just now, he suddenly had a strong premonition that it was going to rain soon.

This was the complete opposite of how premonitions of the future typically presented themselves. Psychic premonitions that could be interfered with usually entailed images of what would definitely happen at a certain point in the future. The hunches that kept coming to their minds now seemed random and chaotic, specific details leading nowhere in particular.

It hadn’t been a minute since the agent spoke of the day’s clear weather when harsh reality slapped him across the face.

A peal of thunder tore across the sky.

Dark clouds quickly gathered overhead, and it wasn’t long before the early morning was engulfed by darkness, prematurely turning into evening.

"Eh, weird, the meteorological station clearly stated that it would be a sunny day."

The red-faced agent flashed an awkward smile, but before he finished speaking, a downpour slanted down from the clouds, making the already tense atmosphere in the car even more oppressive.

The intensity of the rain was alarming; in Song Lan’s memory, District Seventeen had almost never experienced rainfall to this degree.

He leaned against the car door, watching the deluge hit the ground with force.

In that instant, he suddenly realized why he had the ominous feeling swelling in his heart, though the process seemed far-fetched, and hardly a few would believe him if he told them. The image of the agents being pierced by raindrops flashed through his mind vividly.

The first thing to be breached was the car’s bulletproof coating—before the agents had time to react, the water poured down on them like bullets, leaving a dense pattern of "bullet holes" on their bodies.

Just then, the agent beside him suddenly turned pale; his eyes widened as if he were frozen in place.

Immediately after,

"Achoo—!"

The loud sneeze startled everyone in the car, earning the sneezing agent annoyed glances from his colleagues. In such a claustrophobic and tense atmosphere, everyone was on edge, and the sudden noise tightened the knot of anxiety in each person’s heart.

"Sorry, I might be a bit off today..."

This time, even Song Lan was startled by the sudden lift-off of the vehicle.

The blast drowned out the agent’s excuse. In the aftermath of the explosion, the paralyzed car soared through the air before crashing heavily to the ground.

Under the violent impact, all the agents’ heads "coincidentally" struck the bulletproof glass.

Blood trickled down the glass, filling the cramped space with a pungent smell.

The torrential rain continued, and Song Lan looked towards the car roof, its bulletproof coating intact, the sound of raindrops hitting the roof audible.

After ensuring the explosion site had quieted down, a motorcycle burst out from the bushes beside the path. The rider wore a motorcycle helmet and parked the bike next to the sedan, drew a silenced pistol, and repeatedly pulled the trigger.

Bullets struck the car door’s bulletproof coating, sending sparks flying.

Then, the motorcyclist pulled open the rear door of the sedan, and a somewhat familiar voice came from beneath the helmet.

"Don’t just stand there, let’s go!"

Mr. Killer’s voice was distinct, at least Song Lan thought so.

But he hadn’t expected the man to plant a landmine on the highway, rescuing him from the safe transport by the agents of the Abnormal Cases Investigation Agency.

What surprised Song Lan even more was the inaccuracy in the details that had emerged in his mind.

The sudden deluge had not penetrated the car roof, nor had it riddled the agents’ bodies with holes.

The present situation had completely blindsided him.
