Chapter 512: Chapter 512: Escape from District 17!_1
The citizens of the Seventeenth District belatedly realized the arrival of war.
Or, to be more precise, by the time they heard the sound of gunfire and explosions, the mechanized troops, which seemed to come from nowhere, had appeared before them like ghosts.
Screams erupted one after another.
The overwhelming force of the mechanized troops left them with no escape; they could only bury their heads in the sand and hide in nearby shelters.
Even the usually arrogant and domineering gang members had no choice but to flee in disarray in the face of real war machines.
Atop the tallest building in the bustling area of the Seventeenth District, Langinus sat alone in his wheelchair, looking down at the city.
In the past few months, this border city had become a topic of dread in the Review Meeting. After the Foster Family withdrew, no company or family dared to touch this place, and although it was nominally under the territory of the United Government, it had long exceeded the government’s tolerance.
What concerned him more than the "Shadows" that had escaped from "prison" was the city itself.
A hitherto unheard-of wave was brewing here.
It was even more dangerous than the existence of the Shadows and the Rebel Army. It was eroding the United Government in a more covert manner.
The Review Meeting seemed not to fully recognize the harmfulness of this wave. Disparate voices within the policies aimed at the Seventeenth District hampered any progress on the city’s deployment.
Therefore, before the real threat took shape, someone had to take action.
And he was the most suitable candidate.
For a man whose life’s flame was running out, and who was about to enter the coffin, bearing this bad reputation was more than appropriate.
In every war, sacrifices had to be made, and some were destined to bear the infamy.
He had to completely eliminate the enemy hidden deep within the city, and he believed that before long, the Void would reveal its true face.
Soon, the entire world would understand the true face of these enemies that had come from nowhere.
Even if this local war ended in failure, the United Government would gather enough intelligence, which would lay a solid foundation for future victory. This last contribution was what he, as a veteran, could offer to the nation.
Unwittingly, fog obscured the sky.
As the rumors described, this fog hid the sun behind it.
It penetrated every corner of the city.
Langinus focused his mind. He had not been this concentrated for many years, or perhaps he had never been as concentrated as he was now. Even he couldn’t help but be curious about these otherworldly monsters—unprecedented enemies. He did not know how the Void would respond to his creation of war machines, or how it would attack him.
Would it be as the intelligence reports suggested, with suddenly withering walls?
Or a gas that corroded everything?
In what form would those twisted creatures come into this world?
Under the shroud of fog, Langinus waited a long time. From the moment he boarded the chartered flight to the Seventeenth District, he was prepared to die a soldier’s death.
At the end of this wait, a familiar voice pierced through the dense fog:
"Please stay calm, and remain where you are, citizens. We will begin the evacuation immediately," said the voice.
The unruffled tone gave the citizens courage.
This was the evacuation announcement issued using the equipment of a Level Two Alert, a privilege only held by the head of the Law Enforcers. This familiar voice made the citizens realize that Lu Xiang had not, as rumors suggested, boarded a plane to flee the Seventeenth District, leaving behind the city and its people.
But...
How would the evacuation proceed?
After a brief moment of joy, the citizens were left with nothing but confusion.
Even through the mist, they could still see those ubiquitous war machines; moreover, how were the Law Enforcers supposed to evacuate so many citizens with their limited manpower?
Langinus had naturally heard Lu Xiang’s voice too, and a strange gleam appeared in his eyes.
The Review Meeting had offered Lu Xiang exceedingly generous conditions; as long as she boarded the flight to The First Region, her life would further advance, and her talents would be showcased on a much grander stage. It was the perfect opportunity to fulfill her life’s ambitions. So why did she refuse?
Langinus’s question was quickly answered.
He felt the vibrations from beneath the ground.
It seemed as if something was about to burst through from below the earth’s surface.
Citizens scattered throughout The Seventeenth Region were the first to witness the true forms of these creatures—tumorous growths of flesh and blood emerging from the ground, and in the moment they surfaced, their clawed tendrils reached out toward them.
No one had ever seen such monsters, and those websites related to the Void had never mentioned their existence.
For most people, they had never even imagined that such creatures existed in this world.
Before the citizens could react, the proliferating tendrils from the tumorous growths had bound their limbs, and an irresistible force dragged them into the gaping maw of the growths.
The scene before them was like some ancient and bloody ritualistic ceremony, wherein they watched, wide-eyed, as the people around them were pulled into the carnivorous mouths by the tendrils.
Screams echoed throughout the crowd, rising and falling as they tried to escape, but the tumorous growths that continually emerged from the ground had taken over the entire city. Flesh crawled up the buildings, and those who hid inside were dragged out without exception by the tendrils and thrown into the growths as if they were food.
In an instant, the screams from the crowd transferred to the outskirts of the city.
Many of the fleeing citizens, still screaming, suddenly found themselves stepping onto the soft sands.
Those who had long lived in The Seventeenth Region recognized their whereabouts instantly—this was the sand land outside The Seventeenth Region, a short distance ahead would bring them to the first station of the "outer world."
More and more people were spit out by the growths, and from afar, as they looked at the tumorous growths that acted like transporters, they simultaneously harbored an odd thought.
Was this the rescue method Director Lu mentioned?
After spitting them out, the growths seemed to lose all interest in them, and the clawed tendrils retracted.
Before long, the citizens came to a conclusion.
The tumorous growth seemed to be nothing more than a transporter clad in the guise of a frightening creature.
A transporter.
Langinus, far away in the bustling district, came to the same conclusion, and the efficiency of this transporter went far beyond his understanding—within just a few short minutes, these transporters, which seemed to possess their own consciousness, had emptied the entire city!
Instinct told him that he was getting closer and closer to the true nature of the Void.
At this thought, he did not hesitate to issue a destruction order to the mechanical army.
Almost simultaneously, it seemed that the Void creatures that had emptied the city had received a similar order.
Langinus heard a screeching sound from outside the window.
It seemed as if some creature had flown past him.
As he pondered, more and more of these fierce, bat-like creatures gathered together. They converged into a black cloud and swooped toward the mechanical army in the clouds.
There were too many of these creatures; when they came together, they formed a dark cloud.
They rushed toward the mechanical army in the clouds and sprayed a rain of acid, creating a torrential downpour.
Langinus was struck by an unbelievable thought.
The city had developed its own consciousness and had come "alive" at this moment.
