Chapter 513: The Resister_1
Chapter 513: Chapter 513: The Resister_1
The fog that enshrouded the entire city, the sky covered by monsters, and the rifts torn in the earth’s surface, from which insect-like creatures of enormous size were ceaselessly arriving at the battlefield through "transfer stations."
Langinus stood and approached the window, what caught his eye was a scene akin to the apocalypse.
At this moment, he finally saw the true face of the Void.
Behind those bizarre and eerie tales lay an army beyond their comprehension. Even these ferocious monsters of various forms could now be considered a new race, seemingly linked by a common will, launching fearless and savage attacks against the enemies before them.
He could not fathom how this army, capable of occupying the entire city in such a short time, had formed without the United Government noticing.
Yet, Langinus still did not believe this was all the Void had to offer.
He noticed details even more shocking.
As the mechanized troops were crushed and broken by the monsters, growing flesh buds penetrated their bodies, almost immediately transforming them as they fell.
Even the machines could not escape infection; they quickly became part of this army.
Only Langinus knew that the troops currently fighting the monsters were not real machines but projections of spirit and ability.
This precisely was the most horrifying part—the bugs all possessed Spiritual Energy, which was why they could inflict damage on this ghostly legion, which shouldn’t even exist.
Although the Spiritual Energy of individual creatures was very weak, when they joined together, they consumed his Spiritual Energy like a plague of locusts descending upon the land.
Besides non-living things, even Spiritual Energy had become a target for their infection and consumption.
Langinus clearly felt that every time his Spiritual Energy weakened, the enemy grew stronger, and as for casualties, they were inconsequential to this race. Under a collective consciousness, every individual became a perfect soldier, fearlessly fighting to the last moment and intuitively using their bodies to pave the way for their comrades.
This reminded him of the many plans the United Government once proposed.
If one disregarded the differences in species, the traits shown by these creatures were exactly what they had idealized: a state where personal will was completely eradicated, and one devoted oneself entirely to the collective.
Langinus finally understood why Lu Xiang had stayed behind and rejected the Review Meeting.
Before engaging in a slaughter with the mechanized troops, the tumorous trees acting as "transfer stations" obeyed Lu Xiang’s orders and evacuated the citizens of Sector 17 from the city before the outbreak of war.
In other words, Lu Xiang might well be the commander of this unknown species.
However, he did not think it possible for the consciousness of Lu Xiang as an individual to lead an entire region, to pay attention to every detail of the battlefield— even the supreme leader of the United Government’s troops could not manage that. Therefore, he surmised that Lu Xiang had long ceased to be the student who graduated from Morning Star Academy; after arriving in Sector 17, she had been assimilated into the Void, becoming one of them.
Facing an increasing number of enemies, the mechanized troops revealed signs of defeat. Langinus could not imagine how many more monsters were hidden beneath the city’s surface.
Under the cover of the fog, they had completely gained control of the airspace.
Flying creatures that zipped past the window spotted his presence. Accompanying the screeching that was almost at arm’s length, the acid they spat dissolved the glass.
This was an acid that could corrode both machinery and Spiritual Energy.
A wall made of Spiritual Energy rose in front of Langinus, which should have completely blocked the acid. However, the moment the acid fell, a tremendous hole suddenly appeared in the wall.
Everything happened in the blink of an eye. Although Langinus dodged at the first opportunity, the luxurious carpet beneath his feet suddenly became his greatest impediment.
A brief loss of balance was enough for the acid, which had penetrated the barrier of Spiritual Energy, to splash onto his arm.
The cuff was instantly corroded, creating holes, and beneath those holes were burnt skin and bones that had been perforated.
For him, coping with the acid attack was not difficult, the real threat was the other uninvited guest in the room.
"So many years have passed, and it seems you haven’t made much progress."
The Shadow lurking in the darkness spoke.
In an instant, the scar that ran across the left side of his face began to throb intensely with pain.
Langinus looked toward the Shadow hiding in the dark, his arm corroded by acid hung limply; the voice made him fleetingly recall that his enemies were not only the Bug Swarm wreaking havoc in Zone Seventeen but also the first encounter with the other without having attached to a human body, revealing its true form.
"Justice."
The other had also become something beyond human, turning into some unknown entity.
After so many years, the old nemesis had crossed paths once again.
They were familiar with each other’s powers, even their ways of acting, but unlike before, Langinus had not devised a specific battle plan this time.
The Void, unknown tribes, and those Shadows that had escaped from the "prison."
Beyond that, the city harbored an "enthusiastic citizen" of whom they knew nothing, and from the beginning, Langinus never entertained the thought of a complete retreat.
The Shadow spoke again, sizing him up with words, "No, more accurately, your spiritual power has weakened, had it been you from the past, you shouldn’t have looked so miserable."
This was one of The Strongest abilities once acknowledged by the United Government; his power was tailored for the battlefield, and researchers always touted it as invincible.
But to the Shadow, no power in this world was without flaws.
The mechanized forces were a projection of Langinus’s consciousness, in terms of numbers and destructive force both capable of showcasing his unrivaled Spiritual Energy strength, yet just like a commander on the battlefield, once one’s true body was discovered, it was the beginning of the end.
At this moment, Langinus’s attention was being continuously poured into the battlefield.
Even though they were enemies, the Shadow couldn’t help but sigh, "You can no longer take care of yourself."
Humans inevitably cannot resist the ravages of time; it glanced outside the window, and even as a layman to war, it could discern the direction of the battle.
With his gradually weakening spiritual power, while retreating step by step on another battlefield, he also could not guarantee the safety of himself as a commander.
Yet even so, he could not deactivate his ability.
Otherwise, the Bug Swarm, once without a target, would all rush here in a surge.
"I once told you that the meeting of two people is an inevitable outcome."
The Shadow was in no hurry to act, for he had seen the path of destiny before coming here.
A city destroyed by war and an old soldier walking toward the end of his life.
A preordained future that was bound to happen, he did not need to press step by step, as his old adversary would also move toward that fixed end.
The Shadow would rather witness the arrival of this moment from the perspective of a bystander.
After all, Langinus had once been a formidable rival; he had challenged fate time and again, once believing he had conquered destiny.
"So many years have passed, surely your understanding of fate must have changed too?"
