Chapter 505: Chapter 505: I Am Definitely a Good Person_1
The sudden downpour trapped all the Law Enforcers working overtime over the weekend inside the department manor, and many had already begun discussing whether the rainstorm, like the previous heavy fog, represented the activity of some unknown power.
The arrival of one person confirmed their speculation.
A sedan, bearing the insignia of the Special Case Investigation Bureau with a battered body and roof as if it had braved a hail of bullets on the battlefield, sped through the rain to stop at the entrance of the Law Enforcement Manor.
This scene immediately drew the Law Enforcers’ utmost attention, as they quickly hypothesized about an Agent from the Special Case Investigation Bureau who might have been shot while on duty.
However, the person who got out of the driver’s seat caught them off guard.
It was none other than Song Lan, the dual head of the Psychological Counseling and Publicity Department.
At this moment, Song Lan appeared covered in blood, looking utterly exhausted, and he didn’t bother with an umbrella, allowing the downpour to wash away much of the blood and stench from his body.
"Listen to me, everyone, first of all, I am definitely a good person."
This was the first thing they heard after they approached Song Lan.
...
The peculiar case was ultimately taken over by Lu Xiang, who was still at the Law Enforcers’ department. She told Song Lan to first take a shower in the bathroom, placing the prepared change of clothes by the door, and about a quarter of an hour later, a much-fresher-looking Song Lan finally appeared at the entrance of the interrogation room.
In those fifteen minutes, she profoundly reflected on her own actions that morning.
She had mulled over the logic of a bad woman’s behavior and had set a string of alarms for Song Lan, targeting his weaknesses to ensure he experienced true pain early on the weekend morning. But now it seemed the pain might have been too much, leading him to supposedly attack an Agent of the Special Case Investigation Bureau in anger and steal their vehicle.
If her guess was correct, then his status as the head of a department in the Law Enforcers might not be enough to ensure his safety.
"I am absolutely a good person."
Song Lan, drying his wet hair with a towel as he entered, emphasized that sentence once again.
But for Lu Xiang, the credibility of this statement was extremely low.
According to her many years of investigative experience, only Sinners who are about to face legal punishment would keep insisting that they are good people.
"Tell me, what happened?"
Lu Xiang signaled with her eyes for Song Lan to sit across from her and started to frown in a tangled way, contemplating how to clear Song Lan’s name.
With the physical evidence against him, the situation was very unfavorable for Song Lan, and she could only hope that Song Lan had been clean with his actions, like a professional Assassin, disposing of the bodies cleanly so that the Special Case Investigation Bureau would not be able to find the deceased Agents anytime soon.
Having taken a seat, Song Lan cooperated actively with Lu Xiang’s interrogation, describing in detail what had befallen him that morning.
The alarms Lu Xiang had set coincidentally acted as a reference point, allowing him to fill in more details based on time.
But for Lu Xiang, the story Song Lan told was a tall tale that not even a three-year-old might believe, which troubled her even more and forced her to summarize the bizarre and twisted tale, "Are you saying that the Agents from the Special Case Investigation Bureau showed up after I left, asking you to go with them to assist with their investigation?"
"Yes."
Song Lan nodded eagerly.
Lu Xiang believed this part of the story; it fit the Investigative Bureau’s motive and method of operation, but what followed was too strange, the kind of thing no one could even dream up, "You encountered a downpour on the way, and the rain penetrated the vehicle’s bulletproof coating, seriously injuring the Bureau’s Agent?"
"That’s right!"
This was the main reason why Song Lan rushed to the Law Enforcers department to "surrender" himself immediately after sending the investigation agency’s agents to the prosthetic hospital.
The attack had also caught him off guard; he had planned to turn the tables by following the agents to their so-called base station. He had even prepared responses for when they were on the road, but a sudden downpour left him as the sole survivor in the car.
What’s worse, at the time of the ambush, the vehicle had already left the urban area, traveling on a desolate highway with no other cars or eyewitnesses to help vouch for him.
Before leaving the prosthetic hospital, the doctor had said that the condition of several agents was very grim, and it was possible they would never wake up again.
"But you should realize that everyone who acted with you is dead, right?"
Lu Xiang held her head in her hands.
She was willing to believe Song Lan unconditionally, yet the Exceptional Cases Investigation Bureau would clearly not accept such an explanation. Even if Song Lan really had nothing to do with the attack, they would still treat him as an Assassin—someone had to pay for the agents’ serious injuries and deaths.
Another inexplicable aspect was that apart from Song Lan, many people in the department had been in the rain, yet none of them experienced the riddling with holes by raindrops as Song Lan had described.
Could it be that the downpour could select its targets for attack?
Just as they were staring at each other in a standoff, an unexpected report of an incident brought a twist to the affair.
The reporter was an airport staff member.
They claimed that a Review Meeting worker from the core region had been attacked upon disembarking from the plane.
The raindrops had pierced through the umbrella, riddling the body of this worker with holes, which sounded exactly like what Song Lan had described.
Although they had sent the injured worker to the prosthetic hospital as soon as possible, it was too late; a few minutes ago, they had received a death notice from the hospital.
This worker was once a soldier in a certain unit, with his entire body undergone military-grade prosthetic modifications. Even bullets struggled to penetrate the subdermal armor, yet the raindrops had easily breached it. Even stranger, the flight attendant holding the umbrella next to him was completely unharmed, and had witnessed the entire attack on the worker.
The reporter hoped Lu Xiang could make a visit to the scene.
"Punish the sinners, without affecting innocent civilians..."
After hanging up the phone, Lu Xiang recalled Song Lan’s summary of Angle Saffire’s abilities, and the recent attacks seemed to confirm his speculation once again.
However, the coverage of this calamity was alarmingly wide.
The downpour had affected the entire District Seventeen, and considering the statements from Song Lan and the reporter, the attacks had occurred at two opposite corners of the city, spanning half of the metropolis.
What terrified her even more was the possibility that the investigation bureau’s agents and the Review Meeting’s worker might not be the only targets of the attacks; if the entirety of the criminals were the intended targets, then thousands upon thousands of attack incidents might have occurred in just this single day!
Even in the manual for Psychic Abilities at the school, she had never seen such a power.
The range and precision of such a strike were probably at the level of a Six Stars rescuer.
Moments later, Lu Xiang made her decision.
"I’ll go to the prosthetic hospital where the report came from first. The investigation agency may come knocking again, so you stay put in the cubicle and don’t come out. Wait for my return."
