Chapter 506: Chapter 506: Challenging Fate_1

Lu Xiang felt it necessary to personally visit the hospital mentioned by the reporter.

Aside from examining the detailed report on the wounds caused by the raindrops, there was an even more important reason—before the attack, this Review Meeting staff member had contacted her, asking her to clear her schedule for the entire next day as they hoped to meet with her in private.

However, the first thing that happened upon arriving at District 17 on a private plane was this calamitous incident befalling the staff member.

The rainstorm outside still poured down relentlessly.

Standing at the top of the stairs at the building’s entrance, she took a deep breath and reached her hand out into the rain.

The cold raindrops fell into her palm and quickly gathered there, reinforcing Lu Xiang’s belief that the raindrops could identify their own targets.

The torrential rain did not hinder her progress as the hovercar flawlessly docked at the prosthetic hospital’s rooftop platform amidst the downpour.

This was the most famous prosthetic hospital in District 17, one of the designated hospitals for the recuperation of government workers. After becoming the head of the Law Enforcers department, she too had received a medical insurance card provided by the hospital.

The floor where the Review Meeting staff member was located had undergone strict security control; security personnel guarded every passageway leading to this floor, and the entire floor was enveloped in an extremely oppressive atmosphere.

The security staff recognized Lu Xiang and silently opened the way for her.

Passing through the hospital corridors, she saw the Review Meeting staff member who had fallen victim to the rainstorm in a ward near the innermost part, even though the doctors had tried their best to mend his wounds and had administered first aid promptly after his arrival at the prosthetic hospital, all efforts proved futile, not even managing to allow him a more dignified departure.

The deceased looked as if he had been riddled by a close-range Gatling gun, his body riddled with dense punctures, making it difficult for her to recognize what he had looked like before.

Even among all the cases she had handled, this could definitely rank among the most brutal ways to die.

"Has the death report of the deceased been released?"

She inquired of the security personnel at the door.

Soon after, a nurse brought over the deceased’s death report which concealed the personal information of the deceased due to the confidentiality of the Review Meeting.

The death report revealed that the victim had already been declared dead upon arrival at the hospital, and everything that followed was merely symbolic resuscitation.

No miracle occurred, and all resuscitation attempts failed.

What Lu Xiang was most concerned with was not explained in the report; the Prosthetic Doctors couldn’t account for why the subdermal armor was breached by the rain, and the report even hinted that the doctors seemed inclined to disbelieve the airport staff’s explanation, considering it part of the confidentiality work.

The doctors were more inclined to believe that the victim had been hit by an armor-piercing weapon to have suffered such extensive damage.

"The fortunes of a person cannot be measured by common sense, whether it be luck or misfortune."

An old man’s voice suddenly filled the room, familiar to Lu Xiang. She looked towards the source of the sound, finding no one in the room besides herself and the deceased.

"There’s no need to look for me; I’m not in the hospital. I’m communicating with you through a device."

"Sir Langinus?"

Lu Xiang finally recalled the name associated with the voice. Although she had never met this legendary military figure of the United Government, she had heard his voice on different occasions, including a speech he gave at the foundation of the Morning Star school.

For a long time, the old man’s speeches have inspired every student graduating from Morning Star.

Lu Xiang immediately understood who the "important person" referred to by the staff of the Review Meeting was, but she never expected that Sir Langinus would suddenly show up in District Seventeen.

"Sharp judgment, just like the rumors say,"

Sir Langinus paused, then changed the subject, "But even the sharpest judgment, when not applied to the right path, will not yield satisfying results."

This statement sent a chill through Lu Xiang; the feeling of being observed in secret was uncomfortable for her.

However, considering Sir Langinus’s special status, Lu Xiang remained silent.

"Don’t misunderstand, this isn’t a warning. If anything, it’s just the sigh of an old man with one foot in the grave reflecting on life." Noticing Lu Xiang’s reaction, Sir Langinus’s tone softened considerably, "We once spent a great deal of time trying to decipher the secrets of these abilities. Amongst those people, there were many with judgment as sharp as yours. Sadly, all investigations eventually hit a dead end. We gained nothing and paid a heavy price."

While speaking, Sir Langinus casually touched the area between his left eyebrow and forehead.

That scar had once nearly cost him his life.

Despite numerous investigations and targeted strategies, they couldn’t overcome the whims of fate—during the final battle, the enemy had casually picked up a fragment of broken steel rebar from the explosion debris and inflicted the most severe wound of his life.

It was also because of this wound that he had to retreat to the shadows.

"I hope you won’t repeat the same mistake. You should use your talents in more important places."

"Do you mean to say that misfortune killed him?"

"The so-called fortunes are all the choices of fate. Those who follow fate become fortunate, while those who defy it will encounter misfortune."

After many years, Sir Langinus finally understood the real meaning of the "Justice" ability.

And more than once, he wondered if, in that battle that nearly cost him his life, they had not defeated fate. From the moment it was banished to prison, today’s destiny was already sealed.

Lately, he increasingly felt that not just "Justice"—but all those seemingly indestructible Consciousness Entities—were part of destiny. If they were to be brought together, it seemed a vague picture would emerge.

The United Government was doomed to Destruction.

It was the choice of fate.

As one of the founders of the United Government, Sir Langinus had witnessed its development from the start and knew better than anyone the rotten parts of the family and the corporation.

"Yet, mankind has been such a species since the dawn of our existence."

He suddenly spoke, "Our happiness has always been built on plundering and Destruction, and this principle will never change, regardless of the time."

Having been through countless battles, he believed in the existence of fate, but Sir Langinus firmly believed that fate was not unbeatable.

Every trajectory of human development narrated their triumphs over fate.

And now, this was their test.

"Lu Xiang, I hope you understand everything behind this and the reasons why we are doing it."

Sir Langinus repeated, "Then, use your talent where it’s truly needed."
