Chapter 504: Chapter 504: Torrential Rain Level 1 Alert_1

After arriving in the year 2166, Song Lan had his first real encounter with an investigation by men in black.

Three people knocked on the door, wearing friendly smiles and courteously waiting for Song Lan to finish his breakfast and change his clothes. They claimed that the Bureau was tracking an assassin who had infiltrated District 17. They had received a report that Song Lan might have been abducted by the killer, so they had come to inquire about the situation.

To convince Song Lan, they even brought up the Law Enforcers department, claiming that everyone’s common goal was to ensure the peace and prosperity of District 17.

After all, a border assassin at large was an undeniable threat to the peaceful District 17. If he was not captured swiftly, it was likely that other citizens might be harmed.

What a noble reason it might have been, had his assassin friend not reminded him in a text message that the person who hired him was likely from the extraordinary case investigation bureau—Song Lan almost believed it.

The timing of the black-clad agents’ appearance was extremely delicate.

They confirmed that Lu Xiang had left the apartment and observed Song Lan at home through a drone before they immediately took action.

Another flaw was that Song Lan had not mentioned his abduction to anyone other than Lu Xiang, and he had returned home a few hours after the kidnapping that very day, even exchanging contact information with the assassin and becoming good friends. From a temporal perspective, he did not meet the conditions of being missing, yet the Bureau of exceptional cases strangely received the abduction report.

In reality, the car and location had been prepared; as soon as Song Lan got into the car with them, the agents remained silent and the driver, understanding the cue, started to drive in the direction away from the city center.

The agents also reassured him not to worry, as they had constructed a secret base in a location far from the urban area, where the surveillance system would help them capture the movements of the border assassin based on Song Lan’s description.

As the agents and Song Lan set off on their journey, a private plane landed at the airport of District 17.

Several hours before the plane’s arrival, the airport had temporarily shut down, causing delays of varying lengths for all flights. Passengers lingering at the airport were asked to leave by the security robots.

Still, the landing was anything but smooth.

As the journey neared District 17, oppressive dark clouds covered the sky, and they almost had to carve a bloody path through the flashing lightning and booming thunder.

This torrential downpour defied the instruments’ predictions, becoming one of the rare failures in weather forecasting in recent years.

People caught off guard sought shelter in nearby buildings in a fluster, not forgetting to curse the meteorological bureau staff, as their prediction for today was supposed to be clear skies and a warm temperature.

The private plane barely managed to touch down amidst violent turbulence, and as the plane finally came to rest, all the crew members let out a sigh of relief, their pale skin colored with fright now regaining composure. That feeling of a close call, as if having just walked through the gates of the underworld.

Even the Review Meeting staff found it difficult to maintain their composure, having to make an effort to adjust their emotions to avoid any embarrassment in front of Sir Langinus, a figure of even significant influence within the Review Meeting.

The only one in the cabin who remained composed throughout was Sir Langinus himself; in fact, he had sensed the arrival of the storm before the dark clouds had even approached.

The scar on his face began to ache again, more intensely than ever, signaling that he was getting closer and closer to his "old friend." And this sudden storm was the unique way his adversary was saying hello.

"Sir Langinus, we have arranged today’s itinerary. Aureliano has set up a secret meeting at the city hall,"

the Review Meeting staff member pulled up the electronic schedule on his phone.

Given the special nature of Sir Langinus’s identity, this visit should have been kept strictly confidential, but the new mayor of District 17, Aureliano, was the very person whom the dignitary had named to meet.

Even they couldn’t fathom Sir Langinus’s thoughts; they could only infer from various intelligence reports that this new mayor was an independent figure. Since taking office, he had implemented a series of policies unfavorable to corporations, apparently standing on the same frontline with citizens as a politician.

Despite the Conservative Faction’s media smearing Aureliano in every city, trying to paint him as an incompetent attention-seeker with only slogans to offer, in District 17, his approval ratings were historically high. Following this trend, reelection seemed like a certainty.

Besides Aureliano, another person Sir Langinus specifically named to meet was Lu Xiang, a controversial figure recently praised and criticized among different factions.

The Conservative Faction detested her, yet from the recent movements of the Innovator Faction, it seemed they had become Lu Xiang’s staunch supporters. Although they had never publicly acknowledged this support, every decision they made had either directly or indirectly protected Lu Xiang.

"We have made contact with Lu Xiang; do you want her to attend the meeting?"

Faced with his staff’s question, Sir Langinus closed his eyes and shook his head, "I want to see them individually."

"Understood."

With clear instructions, the staff member left the airport. The flight attendant beside him opened a black umbrella for him and led the way off the plane following the crew’s direction, as the landing position had deviated from the planned course, and they needed to arrange the transport for Sir Langinus beforehand.

This downpour was utterly ill-timed.

Cursing to themselves while disembarking in the rain, facing such weather on the first day of travel was not a good omen.

However, as Review Meeting staff, it was imperative they quickly adjusted their mindset to cope with the adverse climate.

He meticulously listed the work tasks in his memo pad, up until the moment the cold rain struck his shoulder.

Hmm?

The frigid sensation compelled him to look at the flight attendant walking beside him, his eyes filled with anger.

Couldn’t the current flight attendants even hold an umbrella properly?

This infuriating weather was bad enough!

Yet, the scene that met his gaze made his pupils constrict.

The beautiful flight attendant’s face was full of terror; she widened her eyes and opened her mouth as if to say something, but her voice seemed to be stuck in her throat.

Beyond the icy touch, there was also a stabbing pain that spread throughout his body.

The staff member suddenly realized something, and he looked up at the sky.

The black umbrella had never left above his head; the reason the rain was hitting his shoulder was that the umbrella had a multitude of holes in it.

The cold, bone-chilling raindrops fell through those holes, carrying a faint scent of blood.

And this was the last scene he ever saw.
